The Chief of the EOM in Suriname, Irene Klinger, reported that 26 OAS observers were present in close to 90 percent of the voting places in the ten districts of the country, and they reported on the development of the elections from the beginning of voting at 7:00 hours to the final counting in various voting places after closing at 19:00 hours. “We are very pleased with the overall development of the elections, mostly the high volume of citizen participation, the calm environment that characterized the elections and the harmony and respect we were able to witness among representatives of the various political parties,” said Klinger, who also added that “this was a true celebration of democracy.” In a preliminary report on the work of observation, Klinger highlighted the effective role of those in charge of polling stations, the vast knowledge of voters with the electoral process and their responsibility as citizens. “It is also important to highlight the role of women working as chairs and members of the polling stations, although that representation is still not reflected in the political parties’ lists of candidates,” Klinger said. Other issues such as the expediting of the vote counting, the procedures for the participation and assisting of voters with disabilities and the best way to conduct elections taking into account weather conditions will be included in the recommendations of the report to be presented soon to the representatives of OAS Member States. Since 1991 the OAS has been observing electoral processes in Suriname. YES Programme adopts dress code BASSETERRE ST. KITTS (May 25, 2010) — The country’s youth is reaping from the visionary action taken by Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas one year ago when he spearheaded the creation of the Youth Empowerment through Skills (YES) Programme. Leslie Connor, manager at the YES Programme secretariat, while in full praise of the Prime Minister’s vision, has said that they have embarked on moving the programme forward by consolidating the gains with the first step being the adoption of a dress code for the YES Programme students which will restructure their outward outlook. “What we are trying to do is to bring some discipline to the YES Programme as we move forward,” noted Connor. “Our intention is to ensure that we get most of the classes in uniform because we find that by doing that they look more respectable. They themselves would learn to know they should dress properly and that we are preparing them for the workplace.”

Dr. Denzil L. Douglas told the Bermuda House of Assembly last Friday (May 21st) that he will return to the twin-island Federation ever mindful of the fact that the blood that unites St. Kitts and Nevis and Bermuda “is stronger than the water that divides us.” Dr. Douglas, who was invited on an official visit to the British Overseas Territory in the Atlantic by Bermuda’s Premier, Dr, the Hon. Ewart Brown, told the lawmaking body he was “deeply honoured to have been invited to address this august institution and to bring greetings to the Government and fine people of Bermuda, on behalf on my own Government and the proud people of the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis” He told Bermuda Parliamentarians that Bermuda figures prominently in the hearts and minds of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis and the interest in the Bermuda islands has been both substantial and of very long standing – and for very good reasons. “The mere idea, Mr. Speaker, that there is a Kittitian community in Bermuda, with whom I will have the honour of interacting, bears powerful testimony to the extent of the bonds that connect our worlds. And it bears testimony to the emotional, familial, and historical linkages between the people of our islands and the people of yours. If anyone doubts the strength of these bonds, your Gombey troupes and our Masquerades stand ready to colourfully, dramatically, and vibrantly convince them otherwise,” said Prime Minister Douglas, who noted that some 60% of Bermudan families can trace their ancestry, in some way, to St. Kitts and Nevis. “This statistic pleases me. It pleases me because I am keenly aware of the strength, the resilience, and the determination of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis. And we all know that throughout the world, the people of Bermuda are respected for their sense of focus, for their discipline, for their standards,” said Dr. Douglas, who pointed out that “these positive traits being common to both your people and mine, are best explained by our shared genealogy.” Stating that out of travail often comes triumph, Dr. Douglas said he believes that the intersecting and interlocking histories of Bermuda and St. Kitts ands Nevis bear out the contribution of Kittitians and Nevisians to the economic, political and social development of Bermuda. “Many years ago the phenomenal infrastructural development that created opportunities for employment in Bermuda, was the pull factor for Kittitians and Nevisians of courage and determination who ventured into the unknown, those many years ago...to make their way to a land they had never seen and circumstances of which they could not be sure - all in their determination to build a better life for themselves and those who depended on them,” noted Prime Minister Douglas. “The result was a social and economic symbiosis, the positive ramifications of which are, today, clear for all to see: Bermuda benefited from the dedication of the Kittitians and Nevisians who came here to be part of the infrastructural transformation process; Kittitians and Nevisians benefited from the opportunities provided by Bermuda to effectively transform a vision into reality. Most importantly, the uncertainties that had plagued the unmet needs of both parties, were soon transformed into tangible and quantifiable progress for all. Today therefore, on behalf of my Government and people, I will formalize that cultural cooperation and bond between our people, which will open yet another chapter in the history of our people and our respective countries,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader.

The workshop will extend over a four day period beginning on June 8th and ending on June 11th at the Basseterre High School Music Room for one hour nightly. Facilitator of the course, Music Specialist, Nigel Williams indicated that upon completion of the course participants would be able to relate sounds to the appropriate musical notes. “Using this technique a person would be able to recognize notes or pitches by just listening. It would allow you to learn music easier whether you are a vocalist or player. This technique will allow you to understand the sound of various notes and be able to reproduce these sounds with or without an instrument,” He said. Mr. Williams went on to say that “not only will participants hone their listening skills but the Tonic Sol Fa technique would also help persons to become better sight readers, in other words one would be able to look at a piece of music and know exactly how it sounds without playing it.” He encouraged band members, choir directors and music teachers and other members of the music fraternity to take part in the workshop, citing that it would encompass every aspect of music and is of great value. According to Williams a workshop of this type would be valued at some US$150 per session. Participant in St. Kitts and Nevis though would benefit from free sessions.
