Under your feet There are some amazingly disgusting things that happen under the ground (and right on top of the ground) that you might not want to know about. If so, stop here and skip to page 8. Finish the food chain Some people get a little uncomfortable when talking about carnivores and predators, but that isn’t the really gross part of the food chain. It’s the things they don’t talk about in school that can turn a stomach. This is a typical food chain. With energy from the sun, the grass produces seeds. The vole eats the seeds. The massasauga rattlesnake eats the vole. The badger eats the snake. Discover the rest of the story The food chain doesn’t really get interesting until the badger dies. If it weren’t for scavengers (animals that feed on dead stuff), the earth would soon be covered with piles of dead plants and animals. When the scavengers are done, the decomposers (bacteria, fungi, millipedes, beetles, and worms) slowly turn dead things back into basic nutrients that plants can use to grow.

    The ecology of British upland peatlands: climate change, drainage, keystone insects and breeding birds Matthew John Carroll PhD University of York Department of Biology September 2012 Abstract Northern peatlands provide important ecosystem services and support species adapted to cold, wet conditions. However, drainage and climate change could cause peatlands to become drier, threatening ecosystem functions and biodiversity. British blanket bogs occur towards the southern extent of northern peatlands and have been extensively drained, so present an excellent opportunity to examine climate change and drainage impacts. Craneflies (Diptera: Tipulidae) are a major component of upland peatland invertebrate communities and provide a key food resource to breeding birds. However, larvae are highly susceptible to desiccation, so environmental changes that dry peat surfaces could harm cranefly populations and, in turn, bird populations. This thesis aims to examine effects of soil moisture, drainage and climate change on craneflies, and the relationship between craneflies and birds. A large-scale field experiment showed that adult cranefly abundance increased with soil moisture. Areas with blocked drainage ditches showed significantly higher soil moisture and cranefly abundance than areas with active drainage. A model of monthly peatland water tables driven by simple climate data was developed. The model accurately predicted water table position, and predicted up to two thirds of water table variation over time. Performance declined when modelling drained sites. The water table model was combined with empirical relationships to model cranefly abundance under climate change. Falling summer water tables were projected to drive cranefly population declines. Drain blocking would increase abundance and slow declines, thus aiding population persistence.

That’s great news! It means that insecticide I treatments should not be needed for any other insects on home lawns in our region. More good news is that insecticide treatments are rarely needed for crane flies either. The bad news is that many people don’t know about the good news and so they treat the lawn anyway. According to one estimate (http://whatcom.wsu.edu/cranefly/ CFquickfacts.htm), homeowners in the Puget Sound area spent about $13 million to buy pesticides for crane fly control in 1999. As we will see, most of them could have saved their money. The state of knowledge about crane flies has increased over time, and the latest information confirms the idea that crane flies are rarely numerous enough to cause damage meriting insecticide treatment. In recent years crane flies are becoming even less common than in the past.

Abstract The Bar‐tailed Godwit is a wader species of which two subspecies occur along the East‐ Atlantic flyway. The European population Limosa lapponica lapponica winters in Western Europe and breeds in Northern Scandinavia. The Afro-Siberian population Limosa lapponica taymyrensis breeds in Siberia and winters in West Africa and use the Wadden Sea twice a year as a stopover site. During spring migration a part of the subpopulation taymyrensis use inland coastal meadows to build up their reserves for the next part of their journey. We studied foraging Bar-tailed Godwits on inland coastal meadows during spring migration. At the study area on Texel, we recorded foraging time, intake rate (prey/min), disturbance, kleptoparasitism and prey availability. During the short stopover at the Wadden Sea small flocks with a mean of 110 individuals forage on inland coastal meadows. Flock sizes decreased over time and the sex ratio changed by a decrease in percentage of males. On inland coastal meadows Bar-tailed Godwits forage primarily on crane fly larvae which were locally available in high densities. However prey densities did not affected the instantaneous intake rate of 1.78 prey/min for females and 1.5 prey/min for males. Kleptoparasitic attacks hardly affected the intake rate of Bar-tailed Godwits. Bar-tailed Godwits lost 0.2% of their foraging time and 0.56% of the total prey items at kleptoparasitic attacks.

In fact, the very definition of “pest” from the Webster’s dictionary includes the word “insect.” But out of the more than one million described species of insects, only about one thousand—one tenth of one percent—are Lconsidered to be serious pests, and only ten thousand, or one percent, are considered to be even occa- sional pests. So what exactly are the rest of these insect species doing if they are not damaging our crops or sucking our blood? It turns out that in addition to not being pests, they are also engaged in extremely beneficial activi- ties. We are fortunate that many beneficial insects make their home in our region, where they perform important services such as pollination, pest control, and the breakdown of organic matter. Following are profiles of some of the beneficial insects and other invertebrates found in Washington Park Arboretum during recent “bioblitzes” (biological surveying events) coordinated by the University of Washington.     Crane Fly Solutions There are more than 1,000 species of crane flies native to North America, but only two types – the European crane fly (ECF) (Tipula paludosa) and the common crane fly (Tipula oleracea) – cause damage to golf courses, sports fields and lawns in the United States, particularly in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest. So, it is important to work with an extension agent for identification, understanding life cycle biology, and solutions for control. European crane fly larvae Adult European crane fly Adult common crane fly Source: Adam Garr, Syngenta Source: Dr. Daniel Peck SYMPTOMS AND ACTIVITY Crane fly larvae, sometimes called “leatherjackets”, cause damage by feeding on roots, shoots and stems of turfgrass plants. They prefer wet or moist soils and tend to be localized near large bodies of water, but that is not required for them to be present. Damage may first be seen in areas of thin turf in the spring after thaw or even during drought stress, and can resemble “ball marks” on a golf course or black cutworm damage. The first observable symptom is thinning turf, expressed as yellowing spots and bare patches, but activity may also be indicated by animal digging activity as raccoons, skunks and opossums forage for mature crane fly larvae. European crane fly damage Source: Dr. Daniel Peck INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR CRANE FLY CONTROL If left untreated, crane flies can heavily damage turf. Once larvae develop into fourth and final instars, insecticide treatments are not as effective, so it is critical to apply preventively and target newly hatched larvae. Traditional insecticide application timing for white grub control typically does not overlap crane fly larvae emergence, so a separate application is required for optimum control.
