And from the moment they meet at Betsy's fifth birthday party, Betsy and Tacy become such good friends that everyone starts to think of them as one person--Betsy-Tacy. There's no brilliance here, and barely even a story or real conflict most of the time, but there's nothing wrong with becoming eleven years old again for a couple of hours. Betsy-Tacy But when her crowd gets into trouble, Betsy's best year could turn out to be her worst. The Betsy-Tacy Treasury: The First Four Betsy-Tacy Books Writer They possess innocence and a wide-eyed sense of simple discovery to the extreme, so much so that it's like drinking a magic elixir that briefly makes the world appear gentle and perfect. No such thing as requesting them on line, back then. We love Betsy, Tacy, and Tib! The Betsy-Tacy Treasury will delight kids, of course, their parents and grandmothers will love the book, too. Maud Hart Lovelace wrote about childhood so well. I also love how effortlessly detailed she is with describing that what it was like growing up in that time. The wonder of the world and how one street and one city can seem so giant and faraway places like Milwaukee can be viewed with imaginative delight are just how a child views the world. I'm glad I got to reread and discover a new love for her character. There's always something magical about the first book in a great series. There are also sections at the end with background about Maud Hart Lovelace, illustrator Lois Lenski, and each of the four books included. We stopped reading after making it through 3 or the 4 books in this treasury, because I think they were getting a bit too complex for my 5-year-old, but she really wants to keep going with them, and so do I—when she's a bit older, we'll definitely continue this delightful series, which rings so true, even 70 years later. I'm glad that adulthood didn't dampen the enjoyment of these stories. I love her unassuming modesty and innocent brutal honesty. When they all turn ten, the girls are grown-up enough to explore the immigrant settlement on the other side of the Big Hill; at twelve, they get to discover the attractions of downtown Deep Valley, Minnesota.     Summer Reading Book Recommendations for EACMSI Junior Level The Junior Level Library is organized into five categories. We talk to the children about how the process of learning to read is like the process of becoming a butterfly. Everyone starts learning the sounds of letters and slowly morphs until they can read big and complicated books with ease. Everyone makes this metamorphosis at their own pace. The most important thing is to keep practicing reading by choosing books that are “just right” for the reader. The first step on this path is with reading books we call “Emergent Readers.” These are often short books with lots of phonetic words and early sight words. Some of these books are smaller chapter books. The next four steps are “Egg,” “Caterpillar,” “Chrysalis,” and “Butterfly.” Our readers progress through each level as their reading skills develop until they become a full-fledged, high soaring Butterfly Reader! Our Summer Reading list is organized into our five categories, and students who have been in Junior Level over the past year should know which level of books will be the “just right” fit for them.     Without a concerted effort, our state’s historic and cultural treasures are in danger of being lost to time. The Minnesota Historical Society awarded a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grant in the amount of $7,000 to the City of Mankato. The grant was approved by the Society’s awards committee on July 22, 2010 and will support its Historic Survey of 12 Properties for Local Designation Project. Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants are made possible by the Minnesota Legislature from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund created with passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution in November 2008. The grants are awarded to support projects of enduring value for the cause of history and historic preservation across the state. Historic Survey of 12 Properties for Local Designation Project The Historic Survey of 12 Properties for Local Designation Project is a project of enduring value because it will provide a list of properties to be listed on Mankato’s Local Historic Registry.     Maud Hart Lovelace’s Historical Novels Excerpts from a letter written by Maud to her step-cousin Marjorie Austin Freeman in 1964: "The Black Angels (John Day Co. 1926, later reprinted by Grosset and Dunlap.) It was laid in Minnesota from the 1850s through the '80s and the town I called Cloudman was, in my mind, Mankato. The plot idea had sprung from the family legend of Uncle Frank, who did not get on well with his step-father, running away from home with an opera troupe and marrying an actress as old as his mother. The character I call Alex was based on Uncle Frank, and mother's memories of his looks and temperament as a boy were helpful to me, as were the yarns he himself had told me in California about his barn-storming days. My fictional opera troupe was based on the Andrews Opera Company. The Andrews family had lived near Mankato in the early days. All the sons and daughters were musical but one. They were bell ringers at first, then started off in a covered wagon to give concerts and later opera through the middle west. In due time, of course, they took to railroad trains. I am sure the music-loving Randalls must have heard them, especially in the bell ringer period. However "The Black Angels" was a novel, and so fiction, and although my hero did run away from a stern stepfather, as Uncle Frank had, I did not model my fictional stepfather on Grandpa Austin.
