  • Kipnis' Slam Powers Tribe, Lowe to Victory by Justin Albers / MLB
Kipnis' slam powers Tribe, Lowe to victory By Justin Albers / MLB.com | 6/1/2012 11:50 PM ET CLEVELAND -- The Indians desperately needed somebody -- anybody -- to solidify the starting rotation and give them a quality start. Once again, it was Derek Lowe to the rescue. Pitching on his 39th birthday, Lowe took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning and helped the Indians to a 7-1 win against the Twins in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Progressive Field. It was Lowe's team-leading seventh win of the season, a year after going 9- 17 for Atlanta. Lowe, who was rocked for eight runs in 2 1/3 innings last Saturday in Chicago, knew he had to quickly put the bad outing behind him and move on. Everybody in the rotation had been hit hard their last time around. To dwell on the past, Lowe said, would set him up for future failure. "There was no panic," Lowe said. "In years past, I would have probably tried to look back too much at the last game. You just understand that, don't try and watch video to figure it out. Just admit that you did bad." Lowe got plenty of help from his offense -- which produced seven runs in the first four innings -- but he gave the Indians a chance by keeping the Twins off the board early. Once the Cleveland bats started coming around with a Lonnie Chisenhall two-run home run in the second inning, Lowe's job became a lot easier.

  • Indians Catch Spring Fever on Truck Day by Jordan Bastian / MLB.Com | @Mlbastian | February 5Th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- a Pair of Mo
Indians catch spring fever on Truck Day By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | February 5th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- A pair of moving trucks pulled out of Progressive Field on Friday morning, beginning the annual cross-country journey from Cleveland to Goodyear, Ariz. There is no word yet whether the trucks saw their shadows, but spring is definitely arriving fast for the Indians. "I don't know what they're talking about with this Punxsutawney Phil," quipped Marty Bokovitz, the Indians' assistant home clubhouse manager. "This is the first day of spring right here, isn't it? When the trucks roll out, everybody gets excited. Spring is starting. Baseball's back. It should be a holiday." Each year, Truck Day signals that the offseason is nearly over. The two 53-foot trucks will roll through enemy territory across the Midwest with large Indians decals covering the sides of one of the trailers. Ed Fisher, who has been driving one of the trucks for the Tribe for the past nine years, said the artwork that was placed on the truck last year led to some fanfare during his 2,000-mile drive through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. "I've had a few people honk their horns and wave and take pictures," Fisher said with a smile. Fisher will haul the lead truck once again this year, pushing through 11-hour days along Interstate 40 with a handful of stops. Barring any obstacles with the weather, he typically takes breaks near the Illinois border, and then in Joplin, Mo., and Amarillo, Texas, before completing the final leg into the Phoenix area.

  • Tribe Signs Catcher Pagnozzi to Minors Deal
Tribe signs catcher Pagnozzi to Minors deal 29-year-old appeared in 12 games in '11 for Rockies and Pirates By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | 12/02/11 1:00 PM EST CLEVELAND -- The Indians added to their catching depth on Friday, signing free-agent Matt Pagnozzi to a Minor League contract that includes a non-roster invitation to attend Spring Training with the Major League club. Cleveland's big league catching situation is currently set with Carlos Santana as the starter and Lou Marson serving as the backup. As things currently stand, Luke Carlin and Michel Hernandez will also be in camp as non-roster invitees this spring. Pagnozzi, 29, adds another catcher to the mix to handle the high volume of pitchers who will be on hand when Spring Training begins. He also potentially gives the Indians another option for Triple-A Columbus, which cycled through six catchers last season. Pagnozzi -- a nephew of former Major League catcher Tom Pagnozzi -- appeared in 12 big league games last season between stints with the Rockies and Pirates, hitting .276 with three RBIs overall. He spent the bulk of the year with Triple-A Colorado, splitting his time behind the plate and at first base. Pittsburgh claimed Pagnozzi off waivers after he was designated for assignment by Colorado on Sept. 11. In 54 Minor League games last season, Pagnozzi hit .275 with three homers and 29 RBIs and posted a .337 on-base percentage. He was an eighth-round selection of the Cardinals in 2003 and enjoyed cups of coffee with St.

  • Indians Announce '16 Player-Development
Indians announce '16 player-development staff By Jordan Bastian / MLB.com | @MLBastian | January 11th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- John McDonald spent the better part of two decades putting dazzling defense on display on the big league stage. The Indians announced Monday that the former shortstop will now be charged with helping mold the developing infielders within their farm system. McDonald, who served as a special assistant to player development last year for Cleveland, will take over as the Tribe's Minor League infield coordinator this year. According to a release by the ballclub, the 41-year-old McDonald will be "the primary resource to Minor League coaches in the implementing and monitoring of individual infielder player plans." The Indians selected McDonald in the 12th round of the 1996 Draft, and he turned himself into one of baseball's elite infield defenders over the course of a 16-year career, which included parts of seven seasons with Cleveland. Dating back to 1990, McDonald is one of only 10 shortstops to register at least 51 Defensive Runs Saved. The Indians have also hired former pitcher Bruce Chen, who retired in 2015 after a two-start stint with Cleveland, to be a Minor League cultural development coordinator. Chen pitched in 17 seasons in the Majors with 11 teams, appearing in 400 games. Chen -- a native of Panama who speaks multiple languages -- will assist all organizational players in the transition to professional baseball, with a focus on Latin-born players. Cleveland also announced Triple-A Columbus manager Chris Tremie, Double-A manager Dave Wallace and Class A Advanced Lynchburg manager Mark Budzinski will all return to the same role in 2016.

Brantley's 1st slam ties it, but Tribe falls in 12th By Jordan Bastian MLB.com @MLBastian CLEVELAND -- The Indians' clubhouse was quiet to the point that the steady hum of the air conditioning was audible late Tuesday night. It was a drastic contrast to the raucous environment that overtook Progressive Field in the ninth inning, when Michael Brantley belted a dramatic, game-tying grand slam. In a near-empty and subdued locker room, Brantley stood at his locker following a tough 8-6 loss in 12 innings to Texas. With one swing, he helped erase what had been a frustrating night in the batter's box for Cleveland's lineup. Then, the Tribe's taxed bullpen could not capitalize on Brantley's heroics. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to get the win," Brantley said. "But we'll keep battling. Never-die attitude. My teammates did a great job of even giving me that opportunity in the ninth inning right there. It was a hard-fought loss." A lack of offensive production early -- Cleveland went 2-for-19 with runners on base in the first eight innings -- and some relief troubles paved the way to the loss column. Lefty Jeff Beliveau, who played a key role in Monday's win, was responsible for three Texas runs in the seventh. Righty Nick Goody escaped jams in both the 10th and 11th innings, but he flinched in the 12th in the form of back-to-back homers off the bats of Joey Gallo and Isiah Kinder-Falefa. Under different circumstances, Goody likely would not have been in the game in that situation; closer Cody Allen logged 41 pitches on Tuesday and was unavailable, and lefty Andrew Miller is on the disabled list.
