WHAT ? CHARACTERISTICS JAZZ BRIDGE is based upon strong clubs, ref. Precision : all (strong) hands from 16+hp onwards go via 1♣. The 2-level openings are mainly preemptive although we JAZZ BRIDGE is also a modular system : only the one-level give 2♣/♦ a multi-touch to show possibly a very strong , openings are interrelated and are mutually impacted if one of . them changes. The 2 and 3 level openings can be filled JAZZ BRIDGE is a FIVE-card based system. 1♥/♠ therefore according to own taste with preferences for preemptiveness promises at least a 5 card. The 1♦- opening can be balanced with a 4 card major or unbalanced with or without a 4 card major. The "weak" 1NT-opening (12-15hp) is done with a balanced hand without a 4 card major and with or without a five card minor.

Jazz Bridge 17 2 Preface

Some say one can divide into 2 groups : those who keep on playing the bridge system they have learned and It became a rough and difficult journey with a lot of pittfalls, those who are a bit more critical and often ask themselves if accidents and lessons learned. Both engineers realize the unique context of their journey : 2 brothers with the same interests in this things can not be improved. Differences might occur in Convinced about the added values of the multi - principle ( more finding optimal part score contracts and slams. than one handtype in a single bid) and about the transfer-principle This paper is meant for those advanced bridgers who are "open" (announcing a suit by bidding just below that suit) , it was logical to baptise the new system as MUTOS : MUlti and Transfer Oriented for new ideas and who dare to leave old dogma's on a road of System. creative thinking. Reference : the paper of mr. Zar Petkov himself : Never miss a game again. Zarpoints = sum of two longest suits + difference between longest suit and shortest suit + honneurspoints+ 2per ace + 1 per king

Having read the paper of mr. Petkov, how do we map this on Jazz17? open 1♦/♥/♠ from 26 zarpunten onwards (zp). If you have sufficient hp-strength , just open accordingly. The zar-count comes in handy in border cases where you search for a justification to open (where others may pass). We open (the strong) 1♣ from 32 zp onwards. Partner answers 1♦ with 8-19 zarpoints. From 20 zp onwards you (32+20=52) you make the bidding game forcing. This also means that with a lousy 16hp hand like HB108 VB75 AVB Vx, where before we would open with 1♣ , we now should open with 1♦ (Zar 29). apply the preëmptive openings ( 2x/3x) with 22-25 zarpoints. The simple message is " I do not have 26zp" .

We experienced that reading these pages when using zp's is rather difficult. To preserve the readability we keep on using the Milton-counting. Nevertheless the zar-counting remains valid and is a good instrument to validate hands with distribution power and control cards. We apply following agreement :

The Shortcut The Jo convention : 1♣ - 1♦ - 1♥

Usually, the opener asks and partner answers with steps. The asking happens with JNB. But when the answer is the last element of the When partner shows weak (0-7Hp) with 1♦ we continue in a natural way, reference sequence , we agree that partner can step beyond this "last" step except for the JNB 1♥ which shows a 20+hand with at least a 5card suit. and by doing so, addresses already the answer to the agreed next question. Th e 1 ♥ rebid is alerted as the Jo-convention. Examples will clarify : O P O meaning P meaning 1♣ - 1♥ P promises a 54xx or 64+xx or 6331 with a major 1♠ - 2♣ P clarifies that ♥ is the major suit (step 2) in a 54xx handtype 2♦ - 3♣ O wants to know the 2nd suit by JNB 2♦ . P bids step 4 while there 1♥ 20+ 1NT 0-3 are only 3 remaining suits. So the 2nd suit is ♣ (step 3). But ♣ is the last unbalanced 1♠ 4-7, no 5c element of the suit-sequence, therefor we can give AT THE SAME TIME the 2x 4-7, 5c answer to the next asking (sn?) : step 3=2NT would have shown ♣ and no 1♠/2x 16-19Hp Pass 0-5 sn, so 3♣ = step4 or step2 of the next answer = sn♠ . The hand therefore is 5card 2x 6-7 1♠5♥3♦4♣. O P 1NT 16-19 pas 0-5 1♣ - 1♥ P promises a 54xx or 64+xx or 6331 with a major balanced 1♠ - 3♦ P gives step 8 while basicly there are in this fase only 6 steps. We 2♣ Puppet-Stayman NTknow therefor that the major suit must be ♥ in a 6331 handtype and 3♦ is 6-7Hp the 3th step in the remaining suit sequence to identify the sn in the 6331: ♣ . In other words , the 3♦ answer reveals in one bid the complete hand : 3♠6♥3♦1♣ When opponents overcall 1♣ O P 1♣ - 2♣ P promises a 4333, 4432 or 4441 hand when the overcall is double, 1♦ or 1♥ : system on (we ignore the 2♦ - 3♦ O asks for he number of spades. P gives step 5 while basicly there overcall) are in this fase only 4 steps. We know therefor the hand has a sn spades when the overcall is beyond 1♥ : system off (we continue in a natural AND at the same time that the strength is 11-12 hp. way) O P 1♣ - 2♣ P promises a 4333, 4432 or 4441 hand When system on, we get 2 extra bid-options : (re)double , pass . 2♦ - 2♠ O asks for he number of spades. P gives step 2 = 3 card spades. When the overcall takes our (undisturbed) answer, we double : 2♥ - 3♦ O asks for he number of hearts. The reference now is '432' because eg. 1♣-(1♥)- X = "8+hp, 54xx w/ 5c M" a sn has now become impossible.3♦ is step 4, whch means the last element 1♣-(1♦)- X = "6-7hp" of the reference(=2) AND a strength of 11-12hp. Therefore, the hand of P is 1♣-(1♦)- pass = "0-5hp" 3♠2♥4♦4♣. If O continues with 3♥ then this a control bid, inviting P to do the same until the first game bid in a suit (4♥). When the auction is GF, and opponents intervene, the steps become : s1=pass, s2=double, step 3= JNB, step 4 = JNB+1. We call this approach : the PD12 Jazz Bridge 17 14 When system off, the partner can show a balanced hand (no 5card,8+hp) with "double". The opener can now ask for the number of 1♣ opening/5

When opponents overcall 1♣

•when the overcall is double, 1♦ or 1♥ : system on (we ignore the overcall) •when the overcall is beyond 1♥ : system off (we continue in a natural way)

When system on, we get 2 extra bid-options : (re)double , pass . When the overcall takes our (undisturbed) answer, we double : eg. 1♣-(1♥)- X = "8+hp, 54xx w/ 5c M" 1♣-(1♦)- X = "6-7hp" 1♣-(1♦)- pass = "0-5hp"

When the auction is GF, and opponents intervene, the steps become : s1=pass, s2=double, step 3= JNB, step 4 = JNB+1. We call this approach : the PD12

NTWhen system off, the partner can show a balanced hand (no 5card,8+hp) with "double". The opener can now ask for the number of cards in a given suit via PD12.

If the opener asks for the number of cards in the suit of the opponent, this question is transformed into asking for a stop in that suit. Partner will bid NT with stop, and without a stop he will tell his strength in steps where the NT-step is skipped.

When opponents overcall 1♦ ?

If the opening is doubled, we play SYSTEM ON, meaning that we ignore the double. We gain an extra option : XX that we use for showing 2x4c M, 10+hp

If the overcall is different from double, we play SYSTEM OFF, continuing in a natural way. After an 1♥/♠ overcall, we play the "2-way double" : -or 10+hp w/ or w/o 4c AM -or 8+hp and 4c AM

Ergo : 1♦-(1♥)-1♠ = 5c♠ 1♦-(1♥/♠)-1NT : 6-9hp with stop

If the overcall is 2x, we double when 8+hp, showing the NTmajority of hp and we bid 2y with 5card in y and 10+hp.

* Remark on the 1NT/2♣ anwsers

The hand can also be without a 5card minor (2344 or 3334 ) but then it would be 16+ strong. Indeed, the weaker cases without 4 card major are covered either by Duke ending in 1NT, either by the direct answers of 2/3NT.

The further treatment is exactly the same as it would be about a 5card minor. Note to use 1NT to show the 4 clubs hands (234 4 and 3334 ) and to use 2 ♣ to show the 4 card ♦.
