  • California Coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Support for Legislation to Create Gun Violence Restraining Order Process
September 3, 2014 Governor Jerry Brown c/o State Capitol, Suite 1173 Sacramento, CA 95814 RE: California coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns Support for Legislation to Create Gun Violence Restraining Order Process Dear Governor Brown: The California coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns urges you to sign Assembly Bill 1014 into law to protect Californians from gun violence. Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a coalition of 1,000 current and former mayors in California and across the country who recently joined with Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America to form Everytown for Gun Safety, a coalition of moms, mayors, law enforcement, gun violence survivors, and 2 million everyday Americans. The California coalition of Mayors Against Illegal Guns is a coalition of 69 mayors representing more than 11 million Californians. We watched with horror on May 23, 2014 as a young man murdered six people in Isla Vista, CA. The killer’s parents had contacted police after he made suicidal and homicidal statements. But police decided he did not meet the standard for emergency commitment—and no one could act in time to keep guns out of his hands. AB 1014 would empower law enforcement and family members who see troubling warning signs in cases like these to petition a court and temporarily prohibit a dangerous person from having guns. Gun violence restraining orders (GVROs) would create an opportunity to stop gun violence in real life-or-death situations while still protecting the Second Amendment rights of lawful gun owners. Under current federal and California state law, a person is only prohibited from buying or possessing guns if they have been convicted of a prohibiting crime, have been adjudicated as mentally ill or hospitalized to a mental institution, or else is subject to a restraining order protecting a particular individual.

  • Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/The Philippines Louie Jon A
Koreanovelas, Teleseryes, and the “Diasporization” of the Filipino/the Philippines Louie Jon A. Sanchez In a previous paper, the author had begun discoursing on the process of acculturating Korean/Hallyu soap opera aesthetics in television productions such as Only You (Quintos, 2009), Lovers in Paris (Reyes, 2009), and Kahit Isang Saglit (Perez & Sineneng, 2008). This paper attempts to expand the discussions of his “critico-personal” essay by situating the discussions in what he described as the “diasporization” of the Filipino, and the Philippines, as constructed in recent soap operas namely Princess and I (Lumibao, Pasion, 2012) A Beautiful Affair (Flores, Pobocan, 2012), and Kailangan Ko’y Ikaw (Bernal & Villarin, 2013). In following the three teleserye texts, the author observes three hallyu aesthetic influences now operating in the local sphere—first, what he called the “spectacularization” of the first world imaginary in foreign dramatic/fictional spaces as new “spectre of comparisons” alluding to Benedict Anderson; the crafting of the Filipino character as postcolonially/neocolonially dispossessed; and the continued perpetration of the imagination of Filipino location as archipelagically—and consequently, nationally—incoherent. The influences result in the aforementioned “diasporization”, an important trope of simulated and dramaturgically crafted placelessness in the process of imagining Filipino “communities” and their sense of “historical” reality, while covering issues relating to the plight and conditions of the diasporic Filipino. Keywords: Koreanovelas, Korean turn, teleserye, translation, imagined communities, diaspora, hallyu After a decade of its constant presence in the Philippine market, the extent of change brought about by the “Koreanovela” in the landscape of Philippine television is clearly noticeable and merits revaluation.

  • 20 Century Ends
New Year‟s Celebration 2013 20th CENTURY ENDS ANKIND yesterday stood on the threshold of a new millennium, linked by satellite technology for the most closely watched midnight in history. M The millennium watch was kept all over the world, from a sprinkle of South Pacific islands to the skyscrapers of the Americas, across the pyramids, the Parthenon and the temples of Angkor Wat. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Filipinos should greet 2013 with ''great joy'' and ''anticipation.'' ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east.
