Jenkin Lloyd Jones Jr. Through the headlines of the Tulsa Tribune the Jones family has been a part of local and national history. Chapter 01 – 1:15 Introduction Announcer: The grandfather of Jenkin Lloyd Jones Jr., Richard Lloyd Jones, bought the Tulsa Democrat from Sand Springs founder Charles Page, and turned it into the Tribune. The Tulsa Tribune was an afternoon newspaper and consistently republican; it never endorsed a democrat for U.S. president and did not endorse a democrat for governor until 1958. Jenkin Lloyd Jones Sr. was editor of the Tribune from 1941 to 1988, and publisher until 1991. Jenkin Jones brother Richard Lloyd Jones was the Tribune’s president. Jones Airport in Tulsa is named for Richard Lloyd Jones Jr. Other Jones family members served in various capacities on the paper, including Jenkin’s son, Jenkin Lloyd Jones Jr., who was the last publisher and editor of the paper which closed September 30, 1992. Like other large city evening newspapers, its readership had declined, causing financial losses. Jenk Jones spent thirty-two years at the Tulsa Tribune in jobs ranging from reporter to editor and publisher. He is a member of the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame and the Universtiy of Tulsa Hall of Fame. And now Jenk Jones tells the story of his family and the Tulsa Tribune on Voices of Oklahoma, preserving our state’s history, one voice at a time. E.W. Scripps Company expects newspaper spinoff to retain tax-free status in Journal Media Group acquisition For immediate release Oct. 7, 2015 CINCINNATI – The E.W. Scripps Company (NYSE: SSP) expects the spinoff and merger of its newspaper operations with those of Journal Communications to remain tax free for Scripps and its shareholders if Journal Media Group (NYSE: JMG) is acquired by Gannett Company (NYSE: GCI). Gannett announced plans for the acquisition today. On April 1, Scripps and Journal Communications simultaneously spun off and merged their newspaper operations to form Journal Media Group in a transaction that was tax free for Scripps and its shareholders. At the time of this deal, Scripps and Journal Communications entered into a Tax Matters Agreement to address Scripps’ and Journal Media Group’s rights and obligations with respect to a number of matters, including any sale of Journal Media Group before the second anniversary of the closing of the deal. Under that agreement, Journal Media Group is required to provide Scripps with an unqualified opinion of tax counsel confirming that the tax-free status of the spin-off of Scripps newspapers will be preserved in the event of a sale of Journal Media Group. Scripps has received this tax opinion, which concludes that the sale of Journal Media Group will not result in the prior Scripps spinoff becoming taxable to Scripps or its shareholders. EDT, AUG. 1, 2019 About a quarter of large U.S. newspapers laid off staff in 2018 BY ELIZABETH GRIECO Layoffs continue to pummel staff at U.S. newspapers. Roughly a quarter of papers with an average Sunday circulation of 50,000 or more experienced layoffs in 2018, according to a new Pew Research Center analysis. The layoffs come on top of the roughly one-third of papers in the same circulation range that experienced layoffs in 2017. What’s more, the number of jobs typically cut by newspapers in 2018 tended to be higher than in the year before. Mid-market newspapers were the most likely to suffer layoffs in 2018 – unlike in 2017, when the largest papers most frequently saw cutbacks. Meanwhile, digital-native news outlets also faced continued layoffs: In 2018, 14% of the highest- traffic digital-native news outlets went through layoffs, down slightly from one-in-five in 2017. The following analysis examines layoffs at large newspapers and digital-native news outlets during the full 2017 and 2018 calendar years. An earlier analysis by the Center looked at layoffs at news organizations covering the period from January 2017 to April 2018. I would like to speak on 3 behalf of one television in particular. 4 WGAL-TV is a local station that 5 encourages the community to do their part and 6 contribute to nonprofit organizations who strive to 7 make the Susquehanna Valley a better place to live. 8 On behalf of the nonprofit organizations, 9 specifically, the Schreiber Pediatric Rehab Center, 10 I want to thank WGAL and other local media outlets 11 for doing their part in supporting local groups. 12 The powerful messages that are created 13 on local stations provide an outlet for 14 organizations to publicize fund-raisers and programs 15 that generate the often times solitary funds for the 16 entire year. Not only do the messages become 17 familiar and comfortable to the community, but so do 18 the spokespeople from the stations. They turn the 19 public service announcements into real life 20 situations by attending and participating in the 21 very same events they are helping to promote. 22 Having station personalities present at events 23 reassures the community that our local stations are 24 committed to the cause and not caught up in the 25 implied profitable drives.
