Keyshia Cole is an R&B singer-songwriter, actress, and producer. She gained nationwide acclaim when her first, second and third albums all went platinum. All three albums were supported by her record- breaking reality/documentary series Keyshia Cole: The Way It is which aired on BET from 2006-2008, giving viewers a closer look into Cole’s career and family life. On November 19, 2012 Cole released her fifth studio album, Woman to Woman. Special guest Chrisette Michele, an R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and soul singer-songwriter, debuted her first album in 2007. The album’s lead single charted at number four on Billboard’s Hot Adult R&B Airplay and at number 24 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Michele is a two-time Grammy Award winner, receiving the 2008 Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and 2009 Best Urban/Alternative Performance awards. So almost every night was a wild night—a debate night.” Although Cole has a solid, loving family life with her husband, NBA star Daniel Gibson, and their toddler son, she knows the album’s content may place her in the crosshairs of tabloid gossips that ache to connect the songs to her personal life. She considers the scrutiny a small price to pay for reaching out to fans with such songs as “Enough of No Love” and “Can’t Make U Love Me.” Cole had to change her writing and recording style to fully immerse herself in others’ pain, and admits the process was emotionally taxing. For starters, she’s not one to embrace collaboration with other S iren Digital 2 songwriters or producers. “I usually think, ‘Just let me work. I don’t need other writers or producers,’” she says. “This is the first time I sat down with writers in the studio, and it was a learning process. We’d sit there and say ‘I feel this,’ or ‘I heard that.’ If they were sharing something I’d never experienced, I was able to relate, to feel the pain.” One song, “Trust and Believe,” is about a woman who discovers KEYSHIA COLE her boyfriend and best friend are having an affair, something she’s never experienced.
