Disrupt Aging has been featured on the Amazon® top Movers and Shakers list

A book for anyone who wants to live a life of possibility, connection, and growth

We’ve all seen the ads on TV and in magazines: “50 is the new 30!” “60 is the new 40!” AARP CEO Jo Ann Jenkins disagrees. 50 is (the new) 50, and she, for one, likes the look of it. In her national bestselling book, Disrupt Aging, Jo Ann Jenkins suggests it’s time to redefine what it means to get older. She encourages us to re-think the negative stories we tell ourselves and each other about aging. The book chronicles Jo Ann’s journey as well as those of other fearless individuals working to change what it means to age in America. Disrupt Aging shows us how to embrace opportunity and change the way society looks at getting older. In her highly focused but down-to-earth personal style, Jo Ann provides readers practical, hands-on advice on a broad range of key issues, including: • Taking Control of Your Health • Choosing Where You Live • Making Your Money Last • Putting Your Experience to Work Our ability to live longer, healthier lives is one of our greatest achievements - it’s time we treat it as such. This book will show readers how. We invite you to learn more at www.aarp.org/disrupt-aging

Find a New Brew! - Microbreweries in the East Valley Microbreweries are very popular today, with new ones appearing throughout the East Valley. In order to be classified as a craft brewery, only a limited amount may be produced annually with the majority sold offsite. One reason for their popularity is support for smaller locally owned and operated businesses. Enjoying local beer ensures a sense of a strong community presence, a key to community growth and increased visibility in its own hometown. Local beers offer a variety of flavors and are often much better tasting as the brewery owner and staff have a pasion to brew the finest product. O O The Arizona Craft Brewers Guild is a nonprofit trade association representing small and independent breweries in Arizona. It promotes the craft brewing industry as its members participate in local and national beer festivals, informing the public of the various types and styles of beer produced in Arizona. It encourages responsible consumption of brewery products. To date, there are more than 65 microbrewery licenses in Arizona - the majority of them are Guild O O members. O 26 East Valley Community Reference Guide 2017-2018 mesavisitorguide.com Agri-tourism - From Field to Fork

As Arizona’s commercial farms disappear, family farmers are turning to “agri-tourism” to preserve their legacies. This allows city slickers an opportunity to go back to nature, create memories, pick their own fruits and veggies, visit farm animals, enjoy an agricultural festival, eat fresh, organically-grown food, watch entertainment and more. Farms across Arizona are opening to visitors who are doing their part to help preserve a vanishing industry. Savvy diners know that the closer to your plate your meal’s ingredients are grown, the tastier and more nutritious your food will be. But even sophisticates may be surprised by Arizona’s variety of locally sourced fare, offered at venues ranging from down-home festivals and farmers’ markets, to four-star restaurants.

Home of the Superstition Mountains EXPLORE the wonders of a true desert setting and the unique attractions, dining and entertainment venues sunounding Apache Junction, the easternmost community in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. Nestled in the shadows of the Superstition Mountains, its mining and transportation roots spread along the Apache Trail east of Mesa, which today is the primary commercial/retail area of the city. Apache Junction is the gateway to fantastic outdoor tourism opportunities in the adjacent Tonto National Forest with the majestic Superstition Mountains - towering 5,000’ - overlooking the entire East Valley. In addition to their natural beauty, legend has it that hidden somewhere in its peaks and cavems lies Jacob Waltz’s legendary Lost Dutchman Gold Mine. Fortune seekers have been in search of the gold since the late 1800s and are still seeking it today. On the eastern side of Apache Junction, enter the historic SR88 “Apache Trail,” part of the National Forest Scenic Byway system built in the mid-1920s as a supply route while building the Roosevelt Dam creating Lake Roosevelt, one of the largest lakes in Arizona. Enjoy the many attractions along this 40 miles of steep, winding and mostly unpaved road through magnificent true Sonoran desert scenery of twisted igneous mountains, deep blue lakes and the Salt River. Most of the unique attractions and eateries are on the paved road to Tortilla Flat. Caution is required when driving this steep winding trail and it is not recommended for large RVs or caravans. Continued travel leads to Lake Roosevelt, then loops south to the mining towns of Globe/Miami, connecting onto US Hwy. 60, which returns through Superior and Gold Canyon to Apache Junction and the East Valley. Review the variety of participating attractions, recreation, eateries and entertainment venues in this East Valley resource magazine for detailed information. mesavisitorguide.com East Valley Community Reference Guide 2017-2018 43 O The Historic Mining Camp by Vinton Fugate, Owner

The Mining Camp Restaurant was constructed in 1960 and opened its doors to Arizona in 1961. It was the dream come true for the Cordalis brothers, Ken, Tom and Jack. The brothers had heard of the famous Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine in the Superstition Mountains and chose a building site at the base of the mountain, just below the Doc Palmer Mine. Built of rough sawn Ponderosa Pine, the restaurant was fashioned after the Old West cook shanties. Meals were served family style from heaping platters at long wooden tables with stainless steel plates that replicate the old tin plates of the mining era. Vinton Fugate started working at the restaurant shortly after it opened in 1961. Vinton was 13 years old at that time and started as a dishwasher. He moved up through the ranks quickly and for many years baked all the breads, doughnuts and cookies. He also cooked and served the meals for customers. In 1981, Vinton accepted an offer of partnership with the one remaining Cordalis brother and later purchased the restaurant outright in 1984. In January 2010, Vinton and the Mining Camp family celebrated the opening of the Dutchman’s Hide Out, an elegant western dining experience that quickly became a local favorite. The Mining Camp became a place of tradition for customers as well as employees. Many families have enjoyed weddings, holidays, special events and excellent dinner shows year after year. For so many, the Mining Camp means family. Tragedy struck on July 25, 2017 when the beloved restaurant was lost to fire. The structure may be gone, but the essence and heart that makes the Mining Camp special to so many still remains. The Mining Camp’s story will not end here. Plans to rebuild are in the works. The home away from home, the family traditions old and new. The Mining Camp, the Trading Post and the Dutchman’s Hide Out will continue.
