My argument is that the sense of displacement and preoccupation with "other" worlds which characterise these novels reflect a national tradition which positions Australian life at the "edge" of a culturally and politically dominant "centre." The research investigated questions of early Holocene wood artifact technologies and other plant use before the large-scale arrival of western redcedar (Thuja plicata), a cultural keystone species for Haida in more recent times. The project relied on small- scale excavations and sampling from two main areas of the site: a hearth complex and an activity area at the edge of a paleopond. The archaeobotanical assemblage from these two areas yielded 23 plant taxa representing 14 families in the form of wood, charcoal, seeds, and additional plant macrofossils.

The organization of technological skills and information brought to the problems of salmon utilization by Northwest Coast fishermen was directed to obtaining sufficient calories to meet the requirements of staple storage foods and fresh consumption. This study reconstructs selective elements of the traditional salmon fishery drawing on data from the ethnographic record, journals, and published observations of the period prior to intensive white settlement. To serve the objective of an ecological perspective, technical references to the habitat and distribution of Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus sp.) are included.

    “I’ll Fly Away”—The Chuck Wagon Gang (1948) Added to the National Registry: 2016 Essay by Bill C. Malone (guest post)* Early label “I’ll Fly Away” is one of the most performed songs in the world, counting not only the multitude of recordings of it, but also the innumerable public and private performances made in formal concerts and jam sessions. Like “You Are My Sunshine,” it is one of the few songs that everyone seems to know, at least in part. It was written by one of America’s most respected gospel composers, Albert E. Brumley, whose songs have circulated widely in gospel, country, and bluegrass music. They won their initial popularity during the Great Depression particularly among “plain folk” who sought reassurance of God’s presence, of escape, or of comforting memories of parents and the old home. Brumley was born into a cotton tenant farm family on October 29, 1905 near Spiro, Oklahoma, when that part of the state was still Indian territory. He learned the shape-note style--a system of notation in which shapes are used to depict the musical scale--under the pioneer gospel composer Eugene M. Bartlett, at the Hartford Musical Institute in Hartford, Arkansas. He later worked for the Hartford Publishing Company as an itinerant singing school teacher and sang bass with one of its touring quartets, whose principal business was to sell their paperback hymnals. In 1927, Hartford published Brumley’s “I Can Hear Them Singing Over There,” the first of approximately 800 compositions written for that company and the Stamps-Baxter concern in Dallas.

The aim of this thesis is to discover correlations between the formal attributes of harpoons and recorded func- tion. One hundred and twenty-seven specimen8 from the British Columbia Provincial Museum in Victoria, the National Museum of Man in Ottawa and the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnoloay at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby were examined and recorded. The methodology involved first of all establishine a standard- ized terminoloey for socketed harpoon heads and their consti- tuent parts. This terminology was then applied to the des- criptions of harpoon heads found in the ethnographic literature. Once the morpholoeical-functional types had been defined for the various groups, extendine from the Coast Salish in the south to the Tlingit in the north, the typology was ap~liedto the data in order to specify the formal attributes of the pre- viously defined types, or, conversely, to modify and redefine those types presented in the literature on the basis of the substantive data.

    2002 - 5 FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION Media Ownership Working Group Program Diversity and the Program Selection Process on Broadcast Network Television By Mara Einstein September 2002 Executive Summary: This paper examines the extent to which program diversity has changed over time on prime time, broadcast network television. This issue is assessed using several different measurement techniques and concludes that while program diversity on prime time broadcast network television has fluctuated over time, it is not significantly different today than it was in 1966. The paper also explores the factors used by broadcast networks in recent years in program selection. It finds that networks’ program selection incentives have changed in recent years as networks were permitted to take ownership interests in programming. 2 A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON PROGRAM DIVERSITY Mara Einstein Department of Media Studies Queens College City University of New York The views expressed in this paper are those of the author alone and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Federal Communications Commission, any Commissioners, or other staff. 3 Introduction This paper analyzes the correlation between the FCC’s imposition of financial interest and syndication rules and program diversity on prime time broadcast network television. To demonstrate this, diversity will be examined in terms of 1) content diversity (types of programming) and 2) marketplace diversity (suppliers of programming). This analysis suggests that the structural regulation represented by the FCC’s financial interest and syndication rules have not been an effective means of achieving content diversity. Study Methodology By evaluating the content of programming over the periods surrounding the introduction and elimination of the financial interest and syndication rules, we will measure the trend in program diversity during the time when the financial interest and syndication (“fin-syn”) rules were in effect.
