Given Singapore’s relative youth as an independent nation, for her national orchestra to be celebrating its 30th birthday is indeed a milestone. The SSO came into being as a vision of former Deputy Prime Minister Dr Goh Keng Swee, whose passion and dedication, together with that of the Orchestra’s fi rst Chairman Tan Boon Teik and founding Music Director Choo Hoey, turned a dream into a reality. From its humble beginnings as a 41-member ensemble, the SSO has grown to become one of the most respected orchestras in the region today, whose international presence is substantiated by many well-received tours and celebrated recordings.
