Pedestrian & School Entrances:

The main school site has two, gated, front entrances with a one way system in place for vehicles. There is one shared main entrance (West Gate) for pedestrians and vehicles, including a smaller pedestrian gate. The pedestrian and vehicle access areas are quite clearly separated and marked by way of different paving designs. There is a dedicated exit (East Gate) for SEN transport and delivery vehicles.

Car Parking

There are five car parking spaces available on the main school site. Two disabled spaces, for blue badge holders, and three additional spaces – one of which has electrical charging provision.

One car parking space is allocated to the outreach service provision run by the school, the other is reserved for the school car.

There is limited parking available in Compton Close, up to 15 vehicles at any one time. The road now belongs to the Education Department, but we do not allocate places to specific members of staff and we do encourage ‘more able’ staff, and staff remaining on the school site for the whole day, to not use this road for parking. The road has now been brought up to standard, providing a quality surface, road markings, signs and lighting etc. One side of the road has double yellow lines and there is a yellow hatched area at the end to enable emergency and delivery vehicles to turn around.

There is no immediate controlled parking zone, but the school asks staff to be considerate of our neighbours when parking in adjacent roads such as Cavendish Avenue. Initiatives such as ‘Park and Stride’ are encouraged, this will cut down on the number of cars parked on immediately adjacent streets and will support LA healthy schools initiatives.

The new build of the school reduced the previous number of car parking spaces. The school advocates a ‘car restraint’ policy and supports staff to use other means to commute to work where possible. For example, supporting staff with ‘Ealing Cycle Scheme’ applications, promoting car sharing, promoting ‘walk/cycle to work’ days.

Cycle Storage

There is a covered cycle-shelter available for staff and pupil use. This is an open access, covered, cycle shelter and will not be lockable. The height and width of the cycle bays unfortunately are not suitable for adapted bicycles.

Two showers are available for staff use. These are located in the shower room on the ground floor.

Existing School Policies and Practice to Promote Safe, Healthy and Sustainable Transport

What policies and activities are already happening in your school?

Policies Include: PSHE, Citizenship, RSE, Drug Tobacco and Alcohol, P.E., Independent Travellers documentation, Healthy Schools accreditation, RRS, School Games Mark, School Trips (including compulsory Risk Assessments for all trips using the LA’s guidance notes on health and safety of all trip/visit participants)

Are you a healthy school? Yes

What health projects are run at the school? A wide variety of both discreet and overtly timetabled studies are undertaken. These include short courses facilitated by local PCT (e.g. RSE linked), Home- School Liaison, outside agency work e.g. After-School Sports Club, including Change4Life (primary after school club), Recycling, Free Schools Fruit and Vegetable Scheme and weekly swimming groups in both the Primary and Secondary phases – additional slots have recently been arranged for the early years pupils, daily mile, plogging, magic breakfast and Felix Project . Student groups across the key stages participate in daily walks/short train journeys in order to explore the local community and engage in sensory experiences. Students have the opportunity to experience road safety, use public transport and engage in leisure activities in the community. Cross-curricular activities/studies give students the chance to engage in topic work on environmental education such as growing, recycling and transport. The school always takes part in the charity Sport Relief Mile – the secondary phase run/walk the mile on Drayton Green – and have encouraged links with the Ealing Half Marathon team.

Are you an Eco-school or involved in the Mayors London Environmental Award? As a school we try to conserve energy wherever possible (e.g. turning off lights, switching off computers at the end of the day). Our new building generates a significant percentage of its own electricity through roof top solar panels agreed at planning stage in the redevelopment project, which will also be sold back to the national grid.

We encourage our school community to recycle (e.g. paper, ink cartridges, mobiles). As part of the curriculum, both past, current and future-planned, the school engages in topic work on recycling to encourage the conceptual development of a consistent approach.

There is planned vocational coursework with our horticultural teacher; to include the development of our school as an ‘eco-school’, future sustainability within the school, improving the school environment.

Springhallow School Travel Plan: November 2020 14

What environment projects are run at the school? We have on-going recycling taking place in school, run by the secondary pupils.

We take part in plogging, enterprise projects linked to Horticulture (reused wood to make planters etc.), WE Schools supports school with environmental initiatives through workshops etc., and we have discounts in the school café for use of eco-friendly cups/mugs. We take part in the planting trees and Grow potatoes initiative. The Forest School project provides a hands-on learning experience in a woodland or natural environment with trees.

Does the school have a School Trip policy? Yes, directly linked to LA guidelines and we have a trained Educational visits Coordinator on the SLT.

Does the school have a cycling policy? No

Does the school have a bus policy? No. However, Springhallow implements clear arrivals and dismissal procedures for students, with the Health and Safety of the school community in mind. Please see ‘SEN Transport’ section for arrivals procedures. For dismissal procedures, all students congregate in the school hall at the end of the school day, along with classroom staff and SEN Transport PAs, and are instructed when to walk to their specific mini-bus for departure. The mini- buses are parked inside the school grounds with the engines turned off to minimise fuel emissions, so as not to subject students, staff and the environment to unnecessary engine fumes. When all students are safely strapped into their seats, the buses are allowed to leave the school grounds as per arrivals.

This routine has been highly successful on several fronts: arrivals and dismissals from the school building and site is safe and swift (minimising distress to students who find transition periods difficult) and the risk of students/staff sustaining potential accidents from moving vehicles have been minimised/removed.

Do any of your other school policies relate to school travel? See Policies section

Does your school Health & Safety policy relate to transport issues on the school site? Policy relates to school trips and road safety.

How will the school Travel Plan link to your school vision? Link to Healthy Schools; promote independence via independent travel training in association with Mencap.

Springhallow School Travel Plan: November 2020 15

We encourage staff to make informed travel choices for either the whole or part of their working week and this links to our eco-school vision.

Do you take part in Bike Week or Walk to School Week? For pupils, not currently – as this is not appropriate to their needs.

We do take part in ‘Bikebility’ sessions (through the LA) completed with secondary students.

We do promote to staff and other stakeholders by way of leaflets displayed in the staff room and reception areas. Staff are also encouraged to take part in our staff meetings, individually or together in groups.

If you have cycle storage how well is it used/promoted? Our school buildings provide cycle storage facilities and our staff handbook provides details of this as well as shower facilities. The Primary playground area has a painted cycle track, scooters, trikes and appropriate storage. The Secondary play area provides opportunities to scoot around the quad.

Is cyclist training provided at the school? Yes, as and when required or ’needs-driven’.

Does the school promote to staff, pupils and visitors on how to get to school by public transport? Yes, via the school’s website and in the staff handbook.

Does the school prospectus discourage car use for the school run? N/A - The vast majority of pupils use SEN transport.

Has the school been involved in a Safer Routes to School project? N/A - Although independent travel training includes information on personal safety and safer routes to school.

If so what engineering measures were put in place? N/A
