GUIDANCE ON GOOD PRACTICE FOR NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS INTRODUCTION An Environmental Information System (EIS) is defined as a coordinated assemblage of people, devices or other resources designed to exchange data or knowledge concerning any aspect of the ecosystem, the natural resources within or, more generally, the external factors surrounding and affecting human life. [source: GEMET, General Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus1]. The inventory is made with a focus on systems at the national or, where appropriate (e.g. in federal countries), regional level. The list includes: • National level (and federal/regional level) o Sectorial portals in national information systems o National portals that are used for disseminating geo-spatial information and/or data. o Data portals such as open data portals and INSPIRE geoportals; • European level (list is not exhaustive) o the overviews and databases provided by the EEA ▪ EIONET The Eionet Portal serves the network by providing a platform for networking and information sharing and tools for collection management of environmental data and information. ▪ SERIS2 SERIS is a database with an inventory of national state of the environment reports. ▪ Reportnet 2.0 Reportnet is Eionet’s infrastructure for supporting and improving data and information flows. Reportnet was initially used for reporting environmental data to EEA, but is now also hosting some of DG Environment’s reporting tasks. o Other data resources 1 https://www.eionet.europa.eu/gemet/en/concept/2853 2 http://forum.eionet.europa.eu/nrc-state-environment/seris July 2019 No 07.0203/2017/761039/SER/ENV.E.4 2/64 .
