P. WALKER. THE interesting excavations carried out by the Society of Antiquaries at Richborough Castle have increasingly tended to demonstrate the peculiar importance of that place to the Romans. The whole island was apparently built upon, and included Palaces, Temples, Baths, Mint and Amphitheatre. It had even two main roads radiating from it, one, the Watling Street (the first road the Romans ever built in this country) going through Canterbury on its way to London, and the other to Dover and Lympne. They crossed over the tidal waters from the Castle by means of a causeway, the remains of which can still be seen near Pleet Farm. The harbour was in the north-west of the island, where one of their docks, as viewed to-day, confirms the importance which this naval base had for the Romans ; and if further evidence were needed, the fact that the total finds in coins up to date now exceeds the enormous number of 150,000 would in itself be sufficient. Now what was there about this site that gave it such importance as this, an importance so great that the Castle became the focus of the maritime traffic and the chief port from which the agricultural and mineral products of the country were exported ? The explanation is undoubtedly to be found in the fact of its having been built on an island situated in a land-locked harbour of the now dried-up Wantsum Channel. -

Admiral Cornelis Evertsen
THE MAN WHO TOOK BACK NEW NETHERLAND Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest, 1642- 1706 By Peter Douglas Anyone searching for information about Cornelis Evertsen must be careful; there are three seventeenth century Dutch admirals with this name, and they are all related. Our interest lies in Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest (1642-1706). He was the second son of Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Elder (1610-66), nephew of Admiral Johan Evertsen (1600-66), and cousin of the latter’s son, Admiral Cornelis Evertsen the Younger (1628-79), with whom he is often confused. Cornelis was thus a member of a distinguished dynasty of naval heroes, though evidently one with little imagination when it came to naming babies. His nickname was Keesje de Duivel, or “Little Cornelis the Devil,” both for his bravery and for being ever in the thick of a fight, as well as for his hot-tempered and cantankerous nature. Like a surprising number of Dutch admirals, including De Ruyter, Cornelis was born in Vlissingen, and had already had experience on his father’s ship by age ten. When the Second Anglo-Dutch War broke out in 1665 he became a privateer, and it wasn’t long THE MAN WHO TOOK BACK NEW NETHERLAND Cornelis Evertsen the Youngest, 1642- 1706 before an encounter with three enemy ships led to his capture. Because of his famous father and uncle he received special treatment and came to the attention of the King Charles’ brother James, Duke of York, then Lord High Admiral. Samuel Pepys’ diary records what happened when James met Cornelis on April 17: “And Everson, when he was brought before the Duke of Yorke, and was observed to be shot through the hat, answered, that he wished it had gone through his head, rather than been taken.” Luckily for his country, the ball had only gone through his hat. -

Chapter 16 Wessex and the Reign of Edmund ii Ironside David McDermott Edmund Ironside, the eldest surviving son of Æthelred ii (‘the Unready’), is an often overlooked political figure. This results primarily from the brevity of his reign, which lasted approximately seven months, from 23 April to 30 November 1016. It could also be said that Edmund’s legacy compares unfavourably with those of his forebears. Unlike other Anglo-Saxon Kings of England whose lon- ger reigns and periods of uninterrupted peace gave them opportunities to leg- islate, renovate the currency or reform the Church, Edmund’s brief rule was dominated by the need to quell initial domestic opposition to his rule, and prevent a determined foreign adversary seizing the throne. Edmund conduct- ed his kingship under demanding circumstances and for his resolute, indefati- gable and mostly successful resistance to Cnut, his career deserves to be dis- cussed and his successes acknowledged. Before discussing the importance of Wessex for Edmund Ironside, it is con- structive, at this stage, to clarify what is meant by ‘Wessex’. It is also fitting to use the definition of the region provided by Barbara Yorke. The core shires of Wessex may be reliably regarded as Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berk- shire and Hampshire (including the Isle of Wight).1 Following the victory of the West Saxon King Ecgbert at the battle of Ellendun (Wroughton, Wilts.) in 835, the borders of Wessex expanded, with the counties of Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Essex passing from Mercian to West Saxon control.2 Wessex was not the only region with which Edmund was associated, and nor was he the only king from the royal House of Wessex with connections to other regions. -

Alchemists, Pirates, and Pilgrims: Towards a Revised Model of English Knighthood in the Lancastrian Era GILBERT BOGNER In the stained glass of Ashton parish church, Lancashire, may be seen the kneeling figure of Sir Thomas Ashton who died circa 1458. This fifteenth-century knight is gloriously depicted there adorned in a warrior’s full plate armour; around his neck he wears the Lancastrian ‘SS’ collar, given to loyal adherents of that regime. In spite of this rather conventional iconography, however, Sir Thomas was a very unconventional knight. For instead of pursuing a military or political career, as had his father and grandfather, Sir Thomas seems to have devoted himself to the arcane and mysterious science of alchemy, not a pursuit one normally associates with knighthood.1 In the generalisations of historians and in the popular imagination the medieval English knight is commonly presented in terms of military activities, estate management, and local administration and parliamentary service. One recent popular work, for example, introduces fifteenth-century English knights as primarily military men, yet allows that ‘many now preferred the lifestyle of the landowner, man-about-town and parliamentary representative’.2 There is of course no doubt that knights spent a great deal of time and energy engaged in these affairs, as evidenced by the sheer number of sources devoted to them, especially from the later medieval period. It is there, however, that descriptions of knighthood usually end. We are left with the impression that the life of the fifteenth-century English knight consisted of roughly equal measures of going to war, serving as an office-holder and commissioner, and maintaining a certain level of income through the defence and increase of landed estates. -

Swale’s Coast 4.4 Swale’s Coast 4.4.1 Description 4.4.1.1 Sw ale’s coast starts at TQ828671 at Otterham Quay. It extends for 115 km to TR056650 on Graveney Marshes to the w est of The Sportsman pub. It takes in the Isle of Sheppey w hich is connected to the mainland by tw o bridges at Sw ale. It is the longest coastline in Kent. 4.4.1.2 Approximately 55 km is on PRoWs, 27 km is de facto access (though some is difficult walking) and 33 km is inaccessible to w alkers. The majority of the 27 km of inaccessible coast does not appear to be excepted land. From the Coastal Access aspect it is the most complicated coastline in Kent. Part of the mainland route is along the Saxon Shore Way. 4.4.1.3 The view to seaw ard at the start is over the Medw ay estuary. There are extensive saltings and several uninhabited islands. The route then follows the River Sw ale to Sheppey and back to the Medw ay Estuary. The north and east coasts of Sheppey look out to the Thames Estuary.
