Venn Diagrams
VENN DIAGRAMS What is it? A Venn diagram or set diagram is a diagram that shows relationships among sets of numbers, information or concepts. In around 1880, John Venn introduced the world to the idea of Venn diagrams. Since then they have been used to teach elementary set theory in mathematics, statistics, linguistics and computer science. Using Venn diagrams for reading and in the English classroom allows students to explore relations among ideas. They can use Venn diagrams to organize information according to similarities and differences. Any level of reader can use a Venn diagram to process their thinking around a text. Venn diagrams are useful for comparing and contrasting ideas and are an excellent way to clearly show an overlap of ideas in texts. Why is it important? There is huge cognitive benefit in examining the similarities and differences among concepts. In such as activities, young children search for patterns to make connections between new information and their own background knowledge and therefore process thoughts more deeply (Dreher & Gray, 2009). Using Venn Diagrams can help students become more active in the reading process because they are being asked to analyse a text in a focused manner. As they organise their responses into the chart, they link information across sentences, paragraphs and the whole text. Venn Diagrams can also be useful when asking students to compare and contrast ideas represented in different texts. This focus helps them interpret information in relation to a broader context. For example, using a Venn Diagram to compare the ideas in two texts that have been written from different perspectives, periods of history or fields of study can lead students to deeper understanding of both texts. -

Now we go back to the continent of Europe and to England for this lesson. The prayer I will open with comes from the prayer book of the Church of England, from what is called “The Lesser Peace and Fast.” One of the celebration days on the church calendar of the Church of England has to do with a man whose name will come up in today’s lesson, Charles Simeon. On that particular day in the prayer book, this prayer relates to the life and testimony of Charles Simeon. So, as we begin this lesson, I would like for us to use this prayer, thanking the Lord for Simeon and other faithful ministers whom we will be talking about during this time. Let us pray. O loving Lord, we know that all things are ordered by Thine unswerving wisdom and unbounded love. Grant us in all things to see Thy hand, that following the example of Charles Simeon, we may walk with Christ with all simplicity and serve Thee with a quiet and contented mind through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and with the Holy Spirit—one God forever and ever. Amen. As we think about the history of Christianity in England in the nineteenth century, we begin, of course, with the Church of England, and we begin with the Broad Church. In one of Henry Fielding’s novels, he has a character who says this, “When I mention religion, I mean the Christian religion and not only the Christian religion but the Protestant religion and not only the Protestant religion but the Church of England.” And that was probably the attitude of many people who were members of the church in England in the nineteenth century, particularly members of what was called the Broad Church or adherents to the Broad Church philosophy. -

I certify that the intellectual content of this thesis is the product of my own work and that all the assistance received in preparing this thesis and sources have been acknowledged. ____________________ Diane Barbara Sylvester i Abstract Intellectual history responds to that most difficult question—‘What were they thinking?’ Intellectual historians who concern themselves with the moral thinking of Victorians often view that thinking through a political lens, focussing on moral norms that were broadly accepted, or contested, rather than the moral thinking of particular Victorians as individuals—each with their own assumptions, sensibilities and beliefs. In this thesis, I interrogate the work of nine individual Victorians to recover their moralities, and discover how they decided what is the right, and what is the wrong, thing to do. My selected protagonists contributed variously to Victorian intellectual life—George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell and Charles Dickens, as novelists; Matthew Arnold, John Henry Newman and Charles Haddon Spurgeon, as participants in the public discussion of Christian belief; and William Whewell, John Stuart Mill and Thomas Hill Green, as moral philosophers. I make comparisons between my protagonists’ moralities, but it is not my aim to generalise from them and, by a process of extrapolation, define a ‘Victorian’ morality. -

We are honoured to be hosting and celebrating our 125th Birthday with you this Easter weekend at our level 1 International Open Meet. I would like to extend a warm welcome to our international clubs from Belgium, Ireland, Isle of Man and Spain along with the clubs from the United Kingdom. We have been privileged to draw clubs from around Europe, allowing swimmers to compete against each other in the qualifying window for the Summer Nationals, so I am looking forward to seeing some fast swimming. This Open Meet could not have taken place without a great deal of forward planning and hard work, so I would like to thank Lindsey Davison for all the long hours she had put in to get us where we are today. We have a wonderful team of volunteers helping over the weekend, so to you, I also say thank you from the bottom of my heart. A special mention to our Referees and Officials who without we could not license this Open Meet and I thank them for giving up their time and support. It is a business that has both spiritual and physical components for its effectiveness in the society. Spiritually, it demands prayers while physically; material possessions like money and political influence become veritable tools in enhancing its effectiveness in the world. Historically, the declaration of the Christian faith as legal religion in the Roman Empire by Constantine in the fourth century played a major role in the expansion and the subsequent consolidation of the Church. Likewise, the Clapham sect of the 18 th and 19 th centuries played a significant role in the expansion of the Church beyond the shores of Europe. Their role shows that money and political influence are good vehicles for expanding the gospel of Christ in every part of the world. This work is aimed at a espousing the role of the Clapham sect in the expansion of Christianity in the 19 th century. The aim is to use it as a guide on the best way for Christians to use their wealth and influence towards the expansion of Christianity in contemporary Nigeria. Hence, the work will apply historical method in its evaluation and interpretation. Introduction It is now history that the 18 th century Europe witnesses a rise in the evangelization zeal of Christians in fulfilling the mandate of the great commission, - to take the gospel to the end of the world. -

Introduction This Portfolio consists of seven closely related Papers, of varying length, which propose an approach towards the Philosophy of Education congruent with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) as it has come to be practised in the State of New South Wales, Australia. 2. The argument of the Portfolio Papers Each Paper in the Portfolio develops a particular concept and that concept then, is integrated into the broad concept of education being proposed. i) This first Paper provides an overview that links the Papers of the Portfolio as an integrated project; it also provides relevant information about this author that positions the writer’s professional context in the Portfolio. ii) The second Paper examines three background matters relevant to any discussion of CPE as professional education. It begins by noting what is common in the practices of medical doctors and hospital Chaplains and what is distinctive in those practices before concentrating upon the role of the hospital Chaplain and outlining the current practice for the training and formation of Chaplains in the State of New South Wales. After a short comment on the issue of Modernity, the Paper notes the contribution of key figures in the history of CPE in the United States of America and the formulation of the signature pedagogy of the profession of the hospital Chaplain. -

The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry. -
ABSTRACT in the Early Nineteenth Century, the Church
ABSTRACT In the early nineteenth century, the Church of England faced a crisis of self- understanding as a result of political and social changes occurring in Britain. The church was forced to determine what it meant to be the established church of the nation in light of these new circumstances. In the 1830s, a revival took place within the Church of England which prompted a renewal of the theology and practice of the church, including the Eucharist. This revival, known as the Oxford Movement, breathed new life into the High Church party. A heightened emphasis was placed on the sacramental life and on the Eucharist as the focus of worship. Adherents of the Oxford Movement developed a Eucharistic theology which promoted a closer connection between the elements and Christ’s presence in the Eucharist than did the earlier Anglican tradition. One of the exponents of this Eucharistic theology was Robert Isaac Wilberforce (1802- 1857). The second son of anti-slavery crusader William Wilberforce, Robert was raised in a family of prominent Anglican Evangelicals. At the University of Oxford he came under the influence of his tutor, John Keble, who was one of the four leaders of the Oxford Movement during its heyday. The Gorham case, whose focus was ostensibly the question of baptismal regeneration, turned into a debate on the state’s control over the established church.
