SECOND-ROUND ACTION FEATURES FEDERER, MURRAY, AND MORE

 The first match of Day 3 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in an all-Spanish clash between No. 6 seed and Fernando Verdasco. Both players opened their seasons with strong performances in Asia: Bautista Agut with a title in Chennai and Verdasco with a semi-final and near-upset of Djokovic in Doha. They have met three times in the past, though never on a hard court, and all three matches have gone the distance. Verdasco leads the series 2-1.

 Next up is No. 4 seed Gael Monfils, who will face another player with a strong start to 2017, Daniel Evans. Evans reached his first ATP World Tour final in Sydney (l. to Muller), then made it to the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the first time in Melbourne (l. to Tsonga) and has achieved a new career-best Emirates ATP ranking of No. 43. Monfils, who recently fell out of the top 10 (to No. 12), is still finding his footing in the young season, with a three-set loss to Gasquet last week in Marseille. It is the first match between Evans and Monfils.

 Opening the evening session for the second consecutive night is No. 1 Andy Murray, who cruised through his first post-Australian Open match with a win over Jaziri on Tuesday. Murray’s second- round opponent is Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who suffered through an 11-match losing streak before finally besting in the first round of last week’s Delray Beach event. Garcia- Lopez recorded his second win of the season against Troicki on Monday. Murray leads the head-to- head 2-1, though none of those matches has come since 2012. Garcia-Lopez won their last meeting, at the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells in 2012.

 Roger Federer concludes the day’s Centre Court slate with his first-ever encounter against qualifier Evgeny Donskoy. Federer breezed through his first-round tilt (vs Paire) in just 54 minutes, recording his 48th match win Dubai and extending his perfect 2017 record to 8-0. The 26-year-old Russian Donskoy has enjoyed plenty of success in qualifying rounds lately, reaching main draws in Rotterdam and Marseille last month, and scored his second win in three weeks over Youzhny on Tuesday. Since 2007, Federer has lost only two matches to qualifiers (2013 Hamburg vs Delbonis; 2015 Shanghai vs Ramos), and holds a 4-0 career record against qualifiers in Dubai.

DEFENDING CHAMP OPENS CAMPAIGN ON DAY 2

 The first match of Day 2 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships features defending champion and No. 2 seed Stan Wawrinka, who takes on Damir Dzumhur. It is the Swiss player’s first match since the Australian Open, where he reached his 8th career Grand Slam semi-final before falling to countryman and eventual champion Federer in five sets. Dzumhur is coming from Florida, where he lost in the second round of Delray Beach last week to del Potro. Dzumhur is making his first appearance in Dubai, and will face Wawrinka for the first time.

 Next up is a battle between two players seeking their first career wins in Dubai. No. 7 seed Lucas Pouille, direct from a runner-up showing in Marseille (l. to Tsonga) has lost in the first round in each of his two trips here, while the Czech Adam Pavlasek is entered here for the first time. Pouille’s performance in Marseille was in sharp contrast to his 1-3 record before last week, while Pavlasek is still looking for his 2017 breakthrough, with a loss in his one match so far (Australian Open vs Whittington). They have not faced each other on the ATP World Tour, but did play an ATP Challenger Tour match two years ago, which Pavlasek won in straight sets.

 Opening the evening session is Emirates ATP No. 1 Andy Murray, playing his first match since the surprise fourth-round loss to that knocked him out of the Australian Open. He plays for the first time in his career. Jaziri--who lost in the third round in Melbourne, also to Zverev—hasn’t posted any notable results this year, but did recently achieve his career-best ranking of No. 47. Murray is 11-4 in his career in Dubai, and is looking to improve upon his previous best showing of 2012 finalist.

 Two-time finalist Tomas Berdych concludes the day’s action, taking on qualifier and fellow Czech Lukas Rosol. Berdych reached the last round in Dubai in both 2013 (l. to Djokovic) and 2014 (l. to Federer), sporting a 22-10 overall record at the event. Rosol got to the quarter-finals in 2014 (l. to Federer), but with his ranking well outside the top 100, he needed to qualify this year (d. Dodig, Millot). The two Czechs have played twice before, with both matches going the way of Berdych.
