The Advisory Board will become familiar with the challenges facing public schools and become advocates and stakeholders, while helping to ensure high quality, relevant preparation for the workforce. The Advisory Board also assists with providing resources, marketing pathway opportunities, engaging work-based learning experiences, and student scholarships. Purpose: Our purpose is to synchronize the work of our various teams to operationalize our vision for student success and theory of action by supporting CCR team members in problem solving and making timely effective decisions in support of student achievement. Mike Schwan called the meeting to order, introduced himself and welcomed all to the meeting. He introduced Floridia Cheung, CTE Coordinator for Sunnyside and thanked Sunnyside for hosting today’s meeting. Floridia welcomed all to the campus stating Sunnyside was the largest high school in the District. She also reminded all to attend the Health Fair after today’s meeting. Mike introduced College and Career Readiness staff and Chris Roup, Interim Co-Chair.

Minutes Approval and Nomination Committee Update: Mike Schwan asked committee to review minutes from Advisory Committee meeting on January 17th. Copies of the minutes were included in the folders for each person. After review, Mike asked for a motion to approve. Motion to approve made by Dan Sousa and Stephanie Robinson seconded the motion. All in favor, none opposed. Dan Sousa reported on the recent Nomination Committee meetings held to discuss new Chair and Co- Chair positions. Chris Roup was nominated as Chair and Nuvia Varela was nominated as Co-Chair for the

2019/2020 CTE District Advisory Committee. Both are current co-chairs for sub-committees and they plan to continue in those roles. Dan discussed that voting would take place at the May meeting. Mike Schwan asked if there were any other nominations at this time. No additional nominations were made.

College and Career Readiness Update: Mike reintroduced Kristen Boroski, Director of Career Readiness. Kristen thanked the College and Career Readiness team and the work that has been done. Fresno Unified had presented on several topics at both Educating for Careers and Linked Learning Conferences. She shared an update regarding CTEIG that Fresno Unified was recently awarded 1.8 million. She thanked all industry partners for their letters of support regarding the grants. She shared an update regarding the K12 Strong Workforce Program and an update regarding the grand opening for the new Duncan shops which included Heavy Truck- the first in the State. Kristen invited all to attend the next CTE Advisory on May 16th which would also be the next CTE Summit 5:30pm-7:30pm at Duncan Polytechnical. Mike shared that he was proud to have participated at the recent Linked Learning Conference as a panel member for a presentation by Jeff Delong and Tara Loll on building quality advisory boards that helped to support Work-Based Learning. Chris Roup assisted at the Educating for Careers Conference as a panelist for the same presentation. Several districts complimented the team for the work that was shared. Jeff Delong shared on the recent Job Shadow Days for Fresno Unified and thanked the business that participated. He stated that next year would potentially have a different format to accommodate more opportunities for students.

Sub-Committee Report Outs: Education, Child Development and Public Service: Heather Marquez- Chair for Sub-Committee discussed recent Job Shadow Day experiences and thanked partners with Reading and Beyond, Fresno Fire and Skylife for hosting and inviting students to see what those types of skills and requirements and needed for occupations in those fields. She shared on the 150 Teacher’s Academy students who were recently hired in collaboration with Teacher Development as para professionals to work during Summer in Fresno Unified classrooms across the District. Heather also reminded all that Public Service Day was currently going on at Hoover today and invited all to attend following this meeting. Bullard High had a recruitment event where 8th grade students came to campus and the law pathway students created a mock crime scene for the middle school students to experience. Industrial Manufacturing and Technology: Dan Sousa- Chair for Sub-Committee discussed activities since last meeting. Dan Introduced Karsten, International Education Coordinator from Denmark. He also shared that he would be meeting with Sally regarding pre-apprenticeship programs. Currently 13 Danish students were taking courses at Fresno City College(FCC). 5 FCC students were currently taking culinary courses at Merkentel in Denmark. Dan shared the last meeting was held at Central California Builders Exchange in an effort to showcase another industry partner. Dan stated that he enjoyed seeing new faces almost every meeting and trying to move the meeting to different locations each time. Dan shared on women in trades event, several job shadow experiences for students including Grid Alternatives, Betts, and Cencal construction. Dan was present at the grand opening at Duncan and was happy to see the updated facilities. Duncan and Hoover constructions students will have Tiny Homes for sale at Fresno State Vintage Days on April 26 and 27th. Subcommittee met to discuss internships for students and externships for teachers. Dan reminded all that April 26th is Duncan’s portfolio day and would need industry to volunteer. He also shared that May 2nd was the

upcoming San Joaquin Valley Manufacturing Alliance Manufacturing Summit expecting over 1000 people this year at the convention center. Dan invited all to attend Edison’s Tech Expo May 24th with student projects on display. Business and Entrepreneurship: Nuvia Varela – Co-Chair for the Sub-Committee shared activities including McLane student interns meeting with Union Bank and touring the newly remodeled bank. She shared about Bullard’s student store operated by marketing students and congratulated Bullard in earning 3 Career Skills Challenge medals. Patino teachers recently met with Root Access Hackerspace, Herspace/Workspace as potential mentors for students. 4 Patino students would be competing on a state level as part of the Diamond Challenge pitch competition. She also shared dates for McLane’s upcoming Career Fair on April 9th and Portfolio Day on April 21st and invited all to attend. Health and Human Services: HHS Chair, Stephanie Robinson shared that the last meeting was held at the Department of Behavior health and shared the increased opportunities for positions around mental health. Stephanie also shared on Job Shadow Day experiences and thanked the partnership with UCSF and FCHIP for the experience they created for approximately 90 students, including using the sim lab and learning about all community health issues. The Director of Health Services for Fresno Unified attended the last sub-committee meeting and is now connected to partner with all schools with health pathways. Stephanie shared about upcoming health fairs and upcoming Teen Health Fair hosted by Valley Children’s Hospital. Digital Media, Arts and Design: Jon Bradford, Co-Chair thanked CMAC for hosting the last meeting. He shared on the various job shadow experiences hosted by Valley PBS, KSEE 24, IMAGO and Tangram. As a result of the last CTE District meeting, Hoover students learned tips from Anthony Bailey of ABC 30 regarding their morning announcements. Jon congratulated for the recent Business and Education award from the Fresno Compact. The Grizzlies have been supporters of internships and mentorships for several Sunnyside students. Tamela Ryatt introduced herself and shared more on the powerful partnership with the Grizzlies as well as the partnership with Top Hand Media, who recently came out and photographed students working on an art project. Students have also enjoyed working with Junior Achievement and IMAGO on topics such as professional dress. Additional opportunities for partners to work with students included portfolio days at Sunnyside. Tamela encouraged partners to attend as students truly appreciate their support and guidance. Agriculture and Natural Resources: Charlie Harris, Chair for the Sub-Committee shared the last meeting took place at Root Access Hackerspace. Opportunities around Ag technology including robotics, processing plants, etc. Students recently worked with soil scientists at FSU to receive feedback on their soil samples. Charlie shared on Job Shadow day experiences and thanked partners from Farm Bureau, FSU and Sunmaid Raisins. Charlie discussed Sunnyside students recently participated in Ag Day at . Recently Fresno Grizzlies had invited Fresno Unified to work with them on created a community garden in an open space at Chukchansi Park. The garden would be student ran, student built and would include students from Hoover, Sunnyside and Roosevelt. Opportunities included culinary students showcasing vegetables they grown at Farmer’s Markets and designing menu items that would be featured on game days.

Industry Announcements and Public Comment: Heather Marquez shared about an upcoming Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge Competition/Fundraiser on April 9th.

Chris Roup shared NAMI Walk date of May 11th and invited all to participate at Fresno State. Registration begins at 7:30 and walk officially starts at 9am. Volunteers were also needed. Monorith Arun invited all to McLane Health Fair happening later this evening.

Closing Remarks: Before closing, Chris reminded all to attend the Sunnyside Health Fair before leaving the campus. She shared the half sheet survey card located in their folders and asked all to please provide feedback after attending. Mike and Chris thanked everyone for coming and for their partnership.
