Thursday, February 20, 2020 ARTIST SPOTLIGHT CLASSIC ROCKER DAVID VATERS OFFERS HOPE IN DIFFICULT TIMES ON NEW SINGLE “FLYING” David Vaters’ released his latest single “Flying” today (Feb. 20). It is an uplifting and hopeful song that rhythmically soothes the soul. At some point in life we all lose loved ones. It’s inevitable but it’s never easy. In fact, more often than not it’s a painful experience – one that is often soothed by the hope of something better after death. That’s the sentiment that the Canadian-born artist is trying to capture on his newest single. After years of working with well known musicians and producers such as Henri Spinetti, Dave Markee, Skip Procop, Andre Wahl and Norman Barrett – Vaters has been developing a solo career. His album and single releases over the past couple of years have gained him some notoriety with millions of streams and notable radio play in the UK, Australia and the USA, and his heartfelt, honest and sometimes raw lyrics are DAVID VATERS connecting with fans all over the world. With “Flying,” Vaters said he wants to provide listeners a sense of hope and joy during times of life that are often the most difficult. Uplifting lyrics include the chorus “Everything is different now, I'm fying and looking down / It’s better than I thought it was, I'm fying with angels now.” “A lot of people in our lives have passed away recently and I began to think about what things might be like from their perspective when they pass on and go to heaven,” Vaters said. “That’s how this song came about. I think every songwriter draws from their own experiences, and faith is an important part of my life. It’s an everyday thing. When I write songs, I tend to write about life and getting through things; and with this song, I wanted to touch on having the faith and hope to get through these kinds of situations.” Vaters has paired his organic and transparent songwriting with the classic sound that he’s been known for over the years. His breathy, raspy voice pairs perfectly with a guitar style reminiscent of The Eagles, Tom Petty or Eric Clapton. That said, he can’t be pegged into one genre lane because his songwriting has explored many different sounds and styles. In fact, he’s currently working on a Rock/Reggae fusion that he hopes to release later this year. In 2020, Vaters plans to release a new single on the 20th of every month, all of which will build and combine into a full album set for release on Sept. 20. He started that journey with the frst two singles “Red Sea” and “Love You More” which has gained over 100k streams. Radio programers can download the single off PlayMPE. Listen to the song here. BLAKE, MAREN, FGL, LUKE COMBS LEAD 2017 AIRPLAY an life get much better for Blake Shelton? He anchors one of TV’s top shows, headlines concert dates, has a No. 1 album, and is now the 2017 Country radio airplay leader. CShelton’s 2017 airplay totals propel him to both the top Overall Performer and Top Male spots, driven by a pair of songs – “A Guy With A Girl” and “Every Time I Hear That Song” – that spent three weeks at No. 1. A third single – “I’ll Name The Dogs” – was in the Top 5 as 2017 came to a close. Adding to Shelton’s totals were four cuts from his new album Texoma Shore that charted the week of its release, though he would have topped airplay even without the points generated by those cuts. THEYEAR Florida Georgia Line’s trio of 2017 hits extend Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley’s dominance in INMUSIC the Duo/Group Performer category to fi ve years. They’re also the only non-solo male artist to make this year’s Top 10 Overall airplay performers. The Blake Shelton meteoric rise of Maren Morris continued in 2017. Airplay from “80s Mercedes” and “I Could Use A Love Song” vaulted her to the most-heard female artist of the year. Adding to her Country radio presence this year was a featured performance on the No. 1 single “Craving You” with Thomas Rhett. (Airplay points for that song are not included in Morris’ totals.) This year’s Top New Artist title goes to Luke Combs.

Witty Songs ©Ted Schaar 2011 Several years ago through eBay I bought colored-vinyl versions of The Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album) and The Beatles 1967-1970 (The Blue Album) from a major fan named Ed. After I paid, he asked if I would be interested in some bootlegs he had that featured sessions recorded while The Beatles were working on their amazing albums—he was willing to transfer them to CD free of charge. I mentioned in my thank you e-mail that I was old enough to have seen the Beatles when they first appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. He replied it was "an honor" to meet someone who saw the Beatles live (Ed was born in 1966). This made me think that although those who watched The Beatles that night were part of a huge television audience—almost 74 million1—it's a set whose numbers have decreased tremendously in the 45 years that have passed. That realization, Ed's comment and generous offer to send the CDs, and the about-the-same-time coincidence of having dinner with a man named Bill who saw the Beatles perform in Milwaukee in the fall of 1964 started a chain of events that led me to write two articles. The first, "A Day in the Center of Beatlemania," is about the band's September 4, 1964, appearance at the Arena in Milwaukee. The seed for the second—this one—was planted after Ed's CDs arrived. These were interesting for their roughness and for the insights they provided into the experimentation that produced musical passages such as the unusual Paul McCartney organ part that opens and becomes the backbone of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." On one I was hearing works in progress ranging from the acoustic beginning of "All Together Now" to John Lennon performing an early version of "Good Morning, Good Morning" when out of the blue comes Pete Drake, his talking guitar, and the sliding-steel-words: "I'm just a guitar, everybody picks on me." The track is from the bootleg Through Many Years that focuses on George Harrison and Ringo Starr.2 Ed had combined various bootlegs on each of the CDs he sent.

February 10, 2020, Issue 691 Power Gold: Concentration Game This edition of Country Aircheck’s Power Gold is led by eight artists who combine for 46 of the Top 100 most-heard Gold hits.
