Message from Stephen Robbins, Seminarian

Dear Brothers and Sisters of NDDLM Parish,

To say that this has been an unusual summer to be assigned to a parish as a seminarian would be an understatement! Due to the limitations and precautions we must follow because of Covid-19, our parish has not been able to be quite as active as usual in these summer months. As a result of this, I have not been able to get to know nearly as many of you as I would like.

For those of you who do not know me, I am a seminarian for our diocese, going into my third year of theology studies. God willing, I will be ordained a deacon next year, and a priest in 2022. I am originally from Blackwood, New Jersey, and I am currently studying at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY. I first started to consider the idea of becoming a priest in high school, after I repeatedly had people come up to me and ask if I thought about becoming a priest. I prayed, “God, why does everyone keep saying this? Why would You ever choose me?” I felt an inexplicable attraction to the priestly life, but I was so afraid of what others would think of me, and was not willing to part ways with the idea of having a family. I decided to go to college, hoping that I would enjoy myself so much that I could just forget about the idea of becoming a priest. I went to Drexel University, where I was a member of the varsity rowing team. I had a blast during my first semester, but there was something missing. The Lord wouldn’t leave me alone, and the question of whether or not I should enter the seminary continued to persist. Over my Christmas break, through the witness of other seminarians at a discernment group meeting, it was as if Jesus spoke directly to my heart, “If they can be happy giving their lives for me, then why can’t you?” I decided that I had to give God a chance, and He has been so good to me. My first five years of seminary have been without a doubt the best of my life. I have witnessed firsthand how God always gives us the grace we need to fulfill His will for us.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your prayers and support during my weeks here. Whether through serving at Mass, helping in the office, bringing Jesus to our homebound parishioners, serving at the Lazarus House, teaching summer religious ed, or helping with funerals, I have seen firsthand the ways in which the Holy Spirit is at work in this wonderful parish. I want to thank Father Wallace, Father Steve, Father Alvaro, the parish staff, and all of you for being so welcoming to me. My time here has made me more excited to be a priest than ever before! This parish will forever hold a special place in my heart. Please pray for me as I approach ordination, that I may be a zealous and holy priest. Please know of my prayers for all of you! May God bless this parish!

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Assumption is the oldest feast day of Our Lady, but we don't know how it first came to be celebrated.

After the building of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 336, the sacred sites began to be restored and memories of the life of Our Lord began to be celebrated by the people of . One of the memories about his mother centered around the "Tomb of Mary," close to Mount , where the early Christian community had lived.

For a time, the "Memory of Mary" was marked only in Palestine, but then it was extended by the emperor to all the churches of the East. In the seventh century, it began to be celebrated in under the title of the "Falling Asleep" ("Dormitio") of the Mother of God. Soon the name was changed to the "," since there was more to the feast than her dying. It also proclaimed that she had been taken up, body and soul, into heaven.

That belief was ancient, dating back to the apostles themselves. What was clear from the beginning was that there were no relics of Mary to be venerated, and that an empty tomb stood on the edge of Jerusalem near the site of her death. That loca- tion also soon became a place of pilgrimage. (Today, the Benedictine of the Dormition of Mary stands on the spot.)

At the Council of Chalcedon in 451, Emperor Marcian asked the Patriarch of Jerusalem to bring the relics of Mary to Constan- tinople to be enshrined in the capitol. The patriarch explained to the emperor that there were no relics of Mary in Jerusalem, that "Mary had died in the presence of the apostles; but her tomb, when opened later . . . was found empty and so the apos- tles concluded that the body was taken up into heaven."

The Assumption is God's crowning of His work as Mary ends her earthly life and enters eternity. The feast turns our eyes in that direction, where we will follow when our earthly life is over. Assumption looks to eternity and gives us hope that we, too, will follow Our Lady when our life is ended.

The prayer for the feast reads: "All-powerful and ever-living God: You raised the sinless Virgin Mary, mother of your Son, body and soul, to the glory of heaven. May we see heaven as our final goal and come to share her glory." 8- 650 Parish / Community Information Lazarus House (Emergency Food Pantry) “For I was hungry and you gave me food”… We welcome all donations of food and personal care items delivered to Lazarus House on any Monday or Friday between 10:00am and 12:00 noon.
