JACKSONVILLE JUMBO SHRIMP GAME NOTES Biloxi Shuckers (35-25) at Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (25-33) Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp – Double-A Affiliate of the Miami Marlins Proud Member of the Southern League of Professional Baseball Southern League Champions 1996, 2001, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014 Friday June 8, 2018 – 7:05 p.m. Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville – Jacksonville, Florida Shuckers: RHP Thomas Jankins (7-3, 4.95) vs. Shrimp: RHP Cody Poteet ( Game #59 – Home Game #24 (12-11) Last Game: Birmingham Barons first baseman Keon Barnum and left fielder Nick Basto hit consecutive second-inning home runs to build a 3-0 lead on the way to a 5-2 win to snap the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp’s three-game winning streak in the finale of a five-game series at Regions Field Thursday night. The Barons (27-32) took the lead in the second inning against Jacksonville right-hander Robert Dugger (0-1). Center fielder Ryan Brett hit a one-out single to left field, before Barnum homered to right field, and Basto homered to left field. All-Star center fielder Monte Harrison put the Jumbo Shrimp (25-33) on the board with a third-inning, one-out home run to left field off Birmingham right- hander Connor Walsh, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Walsh completed three innings, allowing an earned run on four hits and one walk with six strikeouts. Right-hander Jake Johansen (1-1) followed Walsh with shutout fourth and fifth innings, and right-hander Cameron Seitzer pitched a scoreless sixth inning. With the Barons leading, 3-1, in the bottom of the third inning against Dugger, Barons All-Star catcher Seby Zavala hit a one-out single, went to third base on third baseman Trey Michalczewski’s double to right field and scored on Brett’s infield RBI single. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Barons All-Star shortstop Danny Mendick singled to right field, and second baseman Bryant Flete hit an RBI triple to right field to make it 5-1. After that, Dugger only allowed one more hit, and he completed six innings, allowing five earned runs on 11 hits and one walk with a season-high eight strikeouts. Left-hander Ben Holmes pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Jumbo Shrimp in his Southern League debut. Jacksonville’s second run came on first baseman Peter O’Brien’s eighth-inning solo home run to left field off Barons right-hander Brandon Brennan. Diaz hit safely in the last four games of the series against the Barons, going 9-for-15 (.600) with four runs batted in during those games with three runs scored. Tuesday he sparked Jacksonville to a 2-1 win, scoring the two runs of the game after he hit doubles in the sixth and eighth innings. Diaz has risen his batting average to .229, and is hitting .333 (12-for-36) over his last ten games for the Jumbo Shrimp with a home run and six runs batted in. Diaz is regarded as Miami’s No. 7 prospect according to MLB.com. Six Shrimp All-Stars: The Southern League announced that six Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp players have been named to the league’s South Division All-Star roster for the 2018 Southern League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 19, at Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Right-handed pitchers Nick Neidert and Pablo Lopez, left-handed pitcher Jose Quijada, catcher Rodrigo Vigil, designated hitter Eric Jagielo, and outfielder Monte Harrison will represent Jacksonville as South Division All- Stars. The Shuckers are Here: Tonight’s game begins the second of four series this season between Jacksonville and Biloxi. Earlier this season, the Jumbo Shrimp were swept by the Shuckers in early May at MGM Park in Biloxi. The next two meetings will be in Jacksonville from June 8-12 and in the second half from July 12-16. The Jumbo Shrimp will not make a return trip to Biloxi until August 6-12. Last season the Jumbo Shrimp and Shuckers played five series, with Jacksonville going 9-15 in those games. That included a 6-9 record in Biloxi, and the Shrimp were 3-6 against the Shuckers in Jacksonville. The Jumbo Shrimp did win their last series here in late August, including a key doubleheader sweep on August 30 that shrunk Jacksonville’s magic number to clinch the second half South Division title from five to one, and the Shrimp clinched a playoff berth the next day with a win at home against the Blue Wahoos. Shrimp Have Prospects: On the roster, the Jumbo Shrimp have five players who were listed by MLB.com as Top 30 Miami Marlins prospects for the 2018 season: OF Monte Harrison (1), Isan Diaz (7), RHP Nick Neidert (8), RHP Pablo Lopez (21), and John Norwood (30).
