5 September o 'Ephphatha' This Sunday is the First Sunday of the Season of Creation, a global ecumenical season which runs from 1 September until the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, 4 October. All Christians are invited to embrace this season in prayer, especially in our liturgies, in deep reflection, in living more sustainably and in raising our voices in the public sphere. We are invited to think more deeply about what is happening at present to the earth, the environmental destruction which now threatens our world and the call to 'eco-conversion'. The theme for this year's Season is 'Restoring Our Common Home'. It offers all of us a unique opportunity to renew our vocation to care more deeply God's creation. In today's Gospel Jesus heals a man who was deaf and who had a speech impediment. Jesus says to him, 'Ephphatha,' which means Be Opened. Immediately this man was healed. There are many issues in our world to which we might be deaf or are 'closed' to, sometimes because they overwhelm us. The environmental crises are an example. Pope Francis invites us in Laudato Si', his letter on the environment, to really hear and listen to the earth, which is crying out to us, to the scientific community who are sounding the alarm bells, to young people who are deeply concerned. Ephphatha! May we be open to hearing these cries, to praying for our world and to take action where we can. We begin with the small actions and encourage others to do the same. Ephphatha! Let us all be open to this call to care more deeply and 'Restore Our Common Home'.

KNOCKNINNY SUNDAY NEWSLETTER 5th September 2021 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

The celebration of the Annual World Day of Prayer for our Common Home.

“We see increasing sensitivity to the environment and the need to protect nature, along with a growing concern, both genuine and distressing, for what is happening to our planet. (Pope Francis, LS 19)

‘Together as one, we can make a difference’ LAUDATO SI’ ON CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME “A world of exacerbated consumption is at the same time a world which mistreats life in all its forms”. (LS 230) Here are some suggestions for you and your family’s reflection. ü The truth about disposable plastic water bottles! : It takes 3 litres of water to produce a 1 litre bottle of water. Tap water is safe to drink. If in doubt contact your Local Council. Keep a jug of water in the fridge instead of waiting for the tap to run cold. ü Are we a throw away culture! : It takes around 2,700 litres of water to make a single cotton t-shirt and it takes almost 500,000 litres of water to extract just 1 kg of gold ü Do you need the latest mobile phone : There is up to 30 times more gold in a tonne of old mobile phones than in a tonne of gold ore ü Wash laundry at 30°C when possible : It cuts C02 emissions, saves energy and helps the environment ü Reduce overall meat intake and have a weekly meat-free day : around 16,000 litres of water is consumed to produce just 1 kg of beef ü Boil only the amount of water you need in the kettle : It saves on energy, time and electricity costs ü Reduce driving speeds : It results in less fuel consumption and reduces emissions of other pollutants from diesel vehicles ü Don’t leave electrical appliances on stand-by : 1 kwh of electricity from a plug socket takes almost 3 kwh of energy to produce ü Use double sided paper: it takes more energy to make 1kg of paper than it takes to make 1kg of steel ü Check out your font size : switching from the font ‘Arial’ to ‘Century Gothic’ saves 30% ink on printing ü Enjoy more time in nature : it connects us to all of Creation and has numerous benefits for our wellbeing

o Formulated by the Kilmore Diocesan Laudato SI’ Group … amid the busyness of our day, “Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies” (St. Mother Teresa)
