TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre. -

Reading for Fictional Worlds in Literature and Film Danielle Simard Doctor of Philosophy University of York English and Related Literature March, 2020 2 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to establish a critical methodology which reads for fictional worlds in literature and film. Close readings of literary and cinematic texts are presented in support of the proposition that the fictional world is, and arguably should be, central to the critical process. These readings demonstrate how fictional world-centric readings challenge the conclusions generated by approaches which prioritise the author, the reader and the viewer. I establish a definition of independent fictional worlds, and show how characters rather than narrative are the means by which readers access the fictional world in order to analyse it. This interdisciplinary project engages predominantly with theoretical and critical work on literature and film to consider four distinct groups of contemporary novels and films. These texts demand readings that pose potential problems for my approach, and therefore test the scope and viability of my thesis. I evaluate character and narrative through Fight Club (novel, Chuck Palahniuk [1996] film, David Fincher [1999]); genre, context, and intertextuality in Solaris (novel, Stanisław Lem [1961] film, Andrei Tarkovsky [1974] film, Steven Soderbergh [2002]); mythic thinking and character’s authority with American Gods (novel, Neil Gaiman [2001]) and Anansi Boys (novel, Neil Gaiman [2005]); and temporality and nationality in Cronos (film, Guillermo -

The antihero, a man of unusually acute intellect through whose eyes we witness the behind-the-scenes dynamics of human religion and faith, is a convict called Shadow. He is flung into the midst of a supernatural fray of gods such as Odin, Anansi, Loki One-Eye, Thor, and a multitude of other ancient divinities as they struggle for survival in an America beset by trends, fads, and constant upheaval—an environment not good for gods. They are joined in this struggle by such contemporary deities as the geek-boy god Internet and the goddess Media. There's a nice plot twist in the end, and the fascinating subject matter and impressive mythic scope are handled creatively and expertly. Gaiman is an exemplary short story writer, but his ventures into novels are also compellingly imaginative. -

INTRODUCTION In October of 2010 the Children’s Book- a-Day Almanac website was launched (chil drensbookalmanac.com); each day since then one essay showcasing one of the gems of children’s literature has been published. Day after day I have been able to connect with readers— to lead them to books that they need and to remind them of the books that have made a difference in the lives of children. I have responded to ques- tions and critiques. I have also had children comment on the Almanac, through their parents and teachers, to inform me how they felt about my choices. All critics need to keep in touch with what happens when the rubber meets the road! As I prepared the fi nal pages for the printed book, I kept thinking about how much my daily Almanac readers have made it a better resource. Although I love the immediacy of cyberspace, I am thrilled to have this book in print. Now readers can easily thumb through and make plans for celebrating their own favorite days in advance. Every day of the calendar year I discuss an appropriate title and then provide information about how it came about, the author, the ideal au- dience, and how the book has connected in a meaningful way with young people from babies to age fourteen. For 365 days—or with a leap year 366—I provide a reli- able guide to the classics and to new books on their way to becoming classics. On March 12 I talk about Madeleine L’Engle’s road from rejection to her award-winning book A Wrinkle in Time; on June 11 I relate how Hans and Margret Rey saved Cu- rious George and themselves from the Nazis; on July 18 I focus on the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and its impact on Munro Leaf’s The Story of Ferdinand. -

I begin by detailing anthropological studies about sacrifice which provide the critical framework for this thesis. I contrast Kay’s trilogy with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and claim that they have fundamentally different worldviews. Tolkien’s worldview is primarily providential where every act of free will only reinforces the plan. -
