opinion Editor: Scott Anderson Group Publisher: Michael J. Hertz Small businesses need tax fairness, innovation and training support in 2018 federal budget, CFIB

CFIB Fairer tax measures and incentives for innovation and youth hiring are at the top of small business owners’ priorities for the upcoming federal budget, submitted by the Canadian Federa- tion of Independent Business (CFIB). “With tax season rapidly approaching, Canadian small busi- ness owners are telling us that the government’s proposed tax changes are still top of mind. There is not enough clarity on the new income-sprinkling rules, and we remain concerned that the proposed passive rules will hurt owners’ ability to save and re- invest in their business,” said Dan Kelly, CFIB’s president. “We’re urging the government to listen to the Senate’s recommenda- tions and put off implementing any tax changes until they fully analyze the impacts of these changes on the economy.” It is especially critical that Canada support its small busi- nesses to remain competitive as the United States introduces business-friendly tax reforms. CFIB is calling for the government to help spur innovation and productivity in the small business sector by introducing an expense deduction for investments in new technology or equip- ment, similar to a $1,000,000 deduction that is already available contact us The Southwest Booster welcomes letters on matters of public interest for publica- to small firms in the United States. tion over the writer’s name. SOUTHWEST BOOSTERX THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2018 16 REAL ESTATE UPDATE 2017 ties for 5th place in residential real estate sales An 8% increase in sales over 2016 helped the 2017 residential real estate market earn a tie for fi fth busiest year in Swift Current, according to year-end MLS® stats. 104 VALLEY PARK PLACE HART ACREAGE A combination of more inventory, a stable economy and steady interest rates helped the city to fi nish the year with 275 residential sales, which ties it with 2015 for the most sales, behind 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2014. The average residential sale price in 2017 was $269,000, which was a 1% decrease over the $274,000 fi gure of 2016 but up from 2015’s $266,000. Meanwhile, the average sale price is 94% of the asking price which has been consistent over the past few years.
