• Over 1,80,603 students from 232 schools participated from 5 groups of Ahmedabad,Mehsana-Palanpur,Bhavnagar,Valsad-Navsari-Gandhinagar and Surat in • Nearly 2.9 lakh students from across 403 schools in 9 groups of cities of Gujarat participated in this competition. Winners from each will vie for the state level recognition • Part of a national level school essay competition by the Tata group where over 2 million students across 100 cities have participated from 3500 schools in 6 languages

Ahmedabad, Friday April 9, 2010 - The Tata group felicitated the city level winners from Ahmedabad,Mehsana-Palanpur,Bhavnagar,Valsad-Navsari-Gandhinagar and Surat of the 1st edition of ‘Tata Building India Essay Competition, Gujarati 2009-10’, today, at a regional awards ceremony held at Ahmedabad Medical association hall in Ahmedabad. The Chief Guest for the evening gave away the trophies and certificates to the winners. The essay entries of the winners from Ahmedabad, Mehsana-Palanpur, Bhavnagar, Valsad-Navsari- Gandhinagar and Surat will further be judged with the entries of winners from 4 other groups of cities for state level recognition. Tata Building India School Essay Competition, Gujarati 2009-10 is a unique initiative by the Tata group of companies for encouraging the young leaders of tomorrow to showcase their skills while expressing their vision of India of the future.

The Gujarati edition of the competition is a part of the fourth edition of Tata Building India Essay Competition 2009-10, a national-level contest which has been conducted in 6 languages (English, , Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Tamil) and has attracted more than 2 million students from 3,500 schools across 100 cities from all over India.

Reaffirming the Tata group’s endeavour to engage with young minds and energize them, Tata Building India Essay Competition has been extended to the state of Gujarat for the first time. This state level initiative has reached out to around 2.9 lakh school children from 403 Gujarati medium schools across 9 groups of cities - Ahmedabad, Surat/Gandhinagar, Baroda/Anand, , Valsad/, Mehsana/Palanpur, /Mithapur, /, Porbundur/Dwarka, Baruch/Ankeleshwar and Bhavnagar.

The theme for Gujarati essay competition was ‘Happy Country’, which is inspired by JRD Tata’s vision of a Happy India. The topic given was ‘your suggestion on what would you do to make India a Happy Country’. The Essay entries received from the enthusiastic participants featured impactful, thought provoking and radical ideas like ‘a healthy country can be a happy country’ or ‘Inclusive growth for everybody will lead to a happier nation’. These thoughts clearly indicate the vision and focus of the young minds of today’s generation.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest, Mr. Parimal Trivedi Vice Chancellor, Gujarat University said, “Tata Building India Essay Competition is becoming stronger year on year by giving opportunity to the youth of the nation, to focus their thoughts in a specific direction. They are the future leaders of India and such initiatives will provide them with the right platform to explore and open their mind and also motivate them to make a difference towards the development of the nation.”

The Tata Building India School Essay Competition Gujarati 2009-10 was a two phase activity in each of the schools. The first phase saw the screening of the film, ‘Keepers of the Flame’(with Gujarati subtitles), a film produced by the noted film maker Zafar Hai.This film chronicles the journey of three Tata leaders Jamsetji Tata, J.R.D. Tata and towards industrializing India. The second phase of the competition saw children participating in the essay writing competition on the theme of ‘Happy Country’.

To ensure a level playing field, the entries for the competition are divided at two levels – junior level (Std. 6-8) and senior level (Std. 9-12). Prizes at the school level included certificates, trophies and special Tata Building India Essay Competition merchandise like Travel Bags and Coffee Mugs. The city winners and the runners-up received handycams and digital cameras in addition to trophies and certificates.

The essays have been judged at the school and city level through prominent local academia. The state winners of would be felicitated with the national winners of 5 other languages in a gala award ceremony to be held later this year. In the past, national winners have got a once in a life time opportunity to visit Rashtrapati Bhavan in New & interact with the President of India.
