Western Trust preparing for engaging Pathfinder initiative The Western Health and Social Care Trust announced in July 2018 that it would be embarking on a Pathfinder initiative looking at Health and Social Care across Fermanagh and West Tyrone. In delivering a series of briefings to staff, public representatives and groups at the South West Acute Hospital on Friday 27 July, Western Trust Chief Executive, Dr Anne Kilgallen, said “We see Pathfinder as creating a whole new conversation about Health and Social Care in Fermanagh and West Tyrone. It means taking a detailed honest look at what we’re doing and whether we can do it better.”

Western Health and Social Care Trust Deputy Chief Executive, Kieran Downey, was also announced as the appointed lead figure for the Pathfinder initiative at the briefings. The first stage in the process centred around a series of engaging discussions with staff in South West Acute Hospital and Omagh Hospital & Primary Care Complex on Friday 17 August.

A new online hub for the Pathfinder initiative will be launched soon and further information and details of the Community engagement programme will be found there. The Armistice in Fermanagh Poignant commemorations planned to mark the end of the First World War Sunday 11th November 2018 marks the day the guns fell silent when the First World War ended a century ago, and Enniskillen will remember the sacrifice of millions of men and women by joining the national commemoration ‘Battle's Over - A Nation's Tribute’. Local events during the week leading up to, and on, that momentous day will recall many aspects of a war that profoundly changed history, the world, and our community. Exhibitions and illustrated talks, music and dance, poetry and drama, WWI artefacts and equipment all feature in a packed programme of evocative events organised around the centenary of the Armistice. Armistice Day Commemorations At 6am on Sunday morning, the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the sound of 1,000 lone pipers playing ‘When the Battle's O’er’, a traditional tune played after a battle, will be heard at Enniskillen Castle and numerous other places across the country and overseas. Heralding the start of the day's commemorations, the event at the Castle organised by the Inniskillings Museum, includes readings, reflective prayers and echoes of the church bells that pealed out for peace. Gates open to the public at 5.30am. The evening Service of Thanksgiving in St Michael’s Church commemorating the end of war will commence at 6pm and feature a poignant installation of ten life-size, transparent silhouettes of military figures in the pews collectively entitled ‘There But Not There’ echoing our community’s sacrifice. As the congregation departs the church 100 members of the Massed Pipes and Drums will play ‘Abide with Me’, ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘When the Battles O’er’ and two beams of light forming a cross in the night sky will be beacons of hope and peace within our community. At 6.55pm the Last Post will sound outside St Macartin’s Cathedral on the bugle that sounded the charge of the 36th (Ulster) Division at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Similar to the morning commemoration this will be replicated simultaneously at more than 1,000 locations across the country. Then at 7pm, the UK’s most westerly beacon of light will be lit in the grounds of St Macartin's Cathedral by Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for County Fermanagh, Viscount KG. This commemoration is inspired by a comment made in August 1914 by Britain’s Foreign Minister, Sir Edward Grey when he said “The lamps are going out all over Europe; we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.” The clock face on St Macartin’s Cathedral will be backlit for the first time and will continue as a beacon of hope for future generations, while skyrockets will illuminate the night just as they did exactly 100 years ago when news of the Armistice was first received. The Cathedral bells that proclaimed the Armistice at 7am on the 11th November 1918 will once again peal to celebrate the end of the Great War. And as the sun sets on the Armistice, Enniskillen Castle will be illuminated red by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. For further details on the events programme for the Armistice please contact the Inniskillings Museum at Enniskillen Castle on 028 6632 3142 or visit www.inniskillingsmuseum.com

Women’s Resource & Development Agency (WRDA) Free Workshops for women and women's groups across Northern Ireland. Contact Elaine on 028 9023 0212 Email [email protected]

WRDA is a women's resource organisation that works across Northern Ireland. We work for women's equality and participation in society. We believe women of all ages and backgrounds have experience, insight and understanding of the world around them - but little opportunity to share their voice. Women play a vital role in their communities, but are often denied opportunities to influence changes and decisions because of rigid stereotypes. Our workshops are tailored specifically for our particular people and area and we use them to explore themes such as discussing womanhood; finding our identity; family roles; sharing stories; women's perspectives; finding your voice; knowing your community; taking part; women's leadership; what shapes us; women's influence on healing and peace. mPower Healthy & Connected Communities mPower is a 5-year EU-funded project operating in the border counties of the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The project will champion a preventative approach to care, supporting societal change by empowering more people to self-manage their health and care in the community.

The service will commence initially in the South East Fermanagh area and will be offered to older people (aged 65 +) living with long-term conditions. Community Navigators will offer personalised wellbeing plans that will focus on supporting self-management and will include:  Social Prescribing – connecting people to local activities and services  Digital Health Interventions – connecting people to technology to enhance support for health & well-being.

Among this group social isolation and loneliness is a major health issue and community engagement has proven to be one of the most effective ways of tackling this issue. mPower is seeking to link with clubs/associations or societies who feel they have a social engagement opportunity for an older person within their programmes either as a member or a volunteer. For more information visit mPower website www.mpowerhealth.eu/ If you have a social engagement opportunity to offer, please contact Elaine Aughey, mPower Implementation Lead @ [email protected] or 07879 113279.

Hearing loss charity seeks new members to join research panel People with deafness and hearing loss are invited to join Action on Hearing Loss’ research panel to share their experiences and inform the charity’s campaigning work.

Panel members are asked to complete up to four online surveys a year and from time to time may be contacted about opportunities to take part in focus groups or one-to-one interviews.

Feedback from the panel has been used to inform the charity’s ‘Working for Change’ campaign, which aims to change attitudes to hearing loss in the workplace, as well as the charity’s work on subtitles. Thanks to 6000 people who got involved in the ‘Subtitle it’ campaign, a law was passed in April 2017 giving Ofcom new powers to legally enforce subtitles on video-on-demand services.

To join the panel or find out more, visit www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/researchpanel where you will be asked to fill in a short questionnaire.
