7th Grade Unit Information

Milestones Domain/Weight: Evolution 15%

Purpose/Goal(s): Within the Evolution domain, students are expected to understand how traits change over time, and how this affects and survival of a species. In addition, students should know that evidence for the long history of changing forms can be found in the many layers of sedimentary rock.

*This unit typically comes with some backlash from students and parents. It may help at the beginning of the unit to give students an analogy. Before even introducing or discussing the unit, ask students to turn to a partner and come up with a definition of a zombie. Then have a few groups share their definition with the class. Ask how many students believe zombies are real and or have seen a zombie in real life. Next, do the same for alien. Explain to the students that the class is going to be learning about evolution. We are not telling you that you have to believe evolution. However, we are asking that you know enough about evolution to be able to explain the argument or definition to someone else similar to what you did for zombies and aliens. You can learn information about a topic or concept to have a conversation and answer questions without having to believe it.
