LUCKNOW l FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 2021 l PAGES 12 l 3.00 RNI NO. UPENG/2020/04393 l VOL 1 l ISSUE NO. 125 4 saal bemisaal! YOGI’S SAINTLY GUIDANCE Vishal Srivastav ne of the finest political craftsman and an avid Ram Bhakt Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has come of O age. Today, the people’s lead- er attains the magnificent milestone of being the longest serving CM from the Bhartiya Janata Party in UP. In the last four years, the CM has been at logger- heads with adversaries in varied forms. From his predecessors, he got as herit- age, an Uttar Pradesh that was low on confidence, riddled with criminal forc- es and public mechanisms that were dying a slow death. Cometh March, 2017 and Yogi takes charge as CM. Ever since then, feloni- ous forces have flung the corridors of the state, the government machinery seems well overhauled and the state has gained back the confidence it lost. Be it the ease of doing business rank- ings, or the five mega expressways, or the upliftment of the poor at the grass- roots, or taking government to people in the remotest parts of the state, Yogi has been one man who has stood rock- solid with the people of his state. He has a heart of gold which beats for the poor and the destitute. Going with the flow, it won’t be incorrect to say that there are many more tenures up and waiting for the saint from the land of Gorakhnath Temple. Songs from the Other Side: Listening to Pakistani Voices in India
SONGS FROM THE OTHER SIDE: LISTENING TO PAKISTANI VOICES IN INDIA John Shields Caldwell A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music (Musicology). Chapel Hill 2021 Approved by: Michael Figueroa Jayson Beaster-Jones David Garcia Mark Katz Pavitra Sundar © 2021 John Shields Caldwell ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT John Shields Caldwell: Songs from the Other Side: Listening to Pakistani Voices in India (Under the direction of Michael Figueroa) In this dissertation I investigate how Indian listeners have listened to Pakistani songs and singing voices in the period between the 1970s and the present. Since Indian film music dominates the South Asian cultural landscape, I argue that the movement of Pakistani songs into India is both a form of resistance and a mode of cultural diplomacy. Although the two nations share a common history and an official language, cultural flows between India and Pakistan have been impeded by decades of political enmity and restrictions on trade and travel, such that Pakistani music has generally not been able to find a foothold in the Indian songscape. I chart the few historical moments of exception when Pakistani songs and voices have found particular vectors of transmission by which they have reached Indian listeners. These moments include: the vinyl invasion of the 1970s, when the Indian market for recorded ghazal was dominated by Pakistani artists; two separate periods in the 1980s and 2000s when Pakistani female and male vocalists respectively sang playback in Indian films; the first decade of the new millennium when international Sufi music festivals brought Pakistani singers to India; and the 2010s, when Pakistani artists participated extensively in television music competition shows. -
The Muslim Experiences in America and Bollywood Discourse After 9/11
www.galaxyimrj.com Galaxy: International Multidisciplinary Research journal ISSN 2278-9529 The Muslim Experiences in America and Bollywood Discourse after 9/11 Chapparban Sajaudeen Nijamodeen Research Scholar, Dept. of English Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Hyderabad. Abstract The Al-Qaeda terrorist group attacks on the USA on September 11, 2001 and shook the world. It has stolen the lives of near about three thousand innocents. Such inhumane act was condemned by all communities irrespective of nay affiliations of religion, nation, cast, color or class. This tragedy did not end up with the death of its victims but it continues on the lives of Muslims in both majority and minority areas. Apart from America’s “war on terror” mission on Iraq and Afghanistan Muslims across the world pushed in to the gallows of hostility and accelerating Islamophobia in the gloomy shadow of Post 9/11. Especially immigrant generation of Muslims to the USA and European countries has to pay heavier prize for 9/11. The dreams of the immigrant Muslim minorities who migrated to America and European countries in search of Dreams from South Asia and Middle East turned in to nightmare after this event. Whether they say, ‘I am an American’, “lover of America”, or “I am not a terrorist” these claims do not make any difference except the signs which they bear. Signs like Muslim names, dress code, topi, Kurta payjama, hijab/naqab, beard, and coal in their eyes which not only became signifier of terror but signified the identities of terror and terrorism in the post 9/11 era. -
Nalini Malani: Mythology, Memory, and Multiplicity in Contemporary Indian Art
NALINI MALANI: MYTHOLOGY, MEMORY, AND MULTIPLICITY IN CONTEMPORARY INDIAN ART Keya I. Patel Department of Art and Art History Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin May 15, 2019 ! Janice Leoshko, Ph.D Department of Art and Art History Supervising Professor Abstract Author: Keya Patel Title: Nalini Malani: Mythology, Memory, and Multiplicity in Contemporary Indian Art Supervising Professor: Dr. Janice Leoshko In 2018, contemporary Indian artist Nalini Malani had two major solo exhibitions in Europe—notable given that late in life, her deeply culturally specific artwork was receiving a mainstream European audience. In a South Asian cultural landscape disrupted and complicated by its recent colonial past, Malani has emerged as a figure who radically encapsulates many of the concerns of India’s present-day art production. This thesis investigates Malani’s appropriation of the mythological heroine Sita in her artwork, through which she comments on the treatment of contemporary Indian women. Through the evolution of her depictions of women like Sita, Malani’s artwork acts as a defiant rebuke of fundamentalism while also speaking in a shared visual language drawing heavily from past tradition, iconography, and narrative. Ultimately, Malani’s work fills an important gap in the Indian national consciousness by serving as an exercise in remembrance, in reclaiming agency, and in raising awareness of the female trauma that has been intertwined and conflated with the project of nation building. 2 Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without the guidance, support, and friendship of my advisor, Dr. Janice Leoshko. Thank you for always advocating on my behalf, offering comfort and direction, and encouraging me to pursue my dreams. -
