Record Publishing, the parent company of The Daily Record, has acquired the Mount Olive Tribune efective this Friday. The Mount Olive Tribune is a family-owned weekly newspaper serving Mount Olive and surrounding communities in southern Wayne and northern Duplin counties. Record Publishing also purchased The Roxboro Courier-Times in late 2017. The Courier-Times is a twice-weekly newspaper serving Person County. “The expansion of Record Publishing demonstrates the company’s commitment to protecting community journalism,” said Keven Zepezauer, group publisher for the newspapers. “The ac- quisition should also provide confidence to Daily Record readers that Record Pub- lishing is firmly entrenched, this in a day and age when family-owned newspapers are increasingly rare. OP-ED Points of light connecting rural to urban wenty years ago this month, I was just finishing up work with the “Rural Prosperity Task Force,” an intense, six-month investigation of rural North TCarolina. The 25-member group, made up of people from the rural and urban parts of our state, issued a series of recommendations de- signed to help rural North Carolina navigate through a painful series of body blows: huge job losses as manufacturing companies shut- tered or shrank, a significant loss of income as the national tobacco program ended, and a slow hemorrhage of talent, as young people moved away. The report argued that there was a “ru- ral-urban divide,” and that something needed to be done, for the good of everyone in the state. “If there’s a hole in one end of the boat,” said Task Force member Tom Lam- beth, “It doesn’t matter which end you are sitting in.” Since then, as near as I can figure, I’ve gone to 23 conferences focused on overcoming the “rural urban divide.” Next month in Raleigh, at a day-long conference called “Reconnect Rural and Urban,” N.C.
