July 30, 2020 Nordiq Sports Strategy Frequently Asked Questions What is the Nordic Sports Strategy? The Nordic Sports Strategy is a concept that Biathlon Canada, Nordic Combined Ski Canada, Nordiq Canada and Ski Jumping Canada can improve their operations and high-performance results by doing more together. The acknowledgement that there are 90+ Winter Olympic medals between these four sports began a conversation that identified a list of possibilities, extending beyond high performance results, that could be possible through collaboration. Canada’s four Nordic sports have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to begin exploring ways they can work together to achieve their ultimate goals of putting more Canadian athletes on podiums and increasing participation in each of their sports. The MOU was officially signed on July 30. Biathlon Canada, Nordic Combined Ski Canada, Nordiq Canada and Ski Jumping Canada will work together to lead the Nordic Sports Strategy process that will evaluate opportunities of having a more unified approach to developing and operating Nordic sports in Canada. What is the purpose of the MOU? Extensive work and discussion have already been done over the years on how sports in Canada can do more together. The Nordic sports are leading the way in this area in Canada. The memorandum of understanding brings the four national sport organizations (Biathlon Canada, Nordic Combined Ski Canada, Nordiq Canada and Ski Jumping Canada) together to explore joint opportunities to achieve their performance and operational goals. How will the exploration process work? Each of the four sports have designated up to two representatives, along with a representative from the Canadian Olympic Committee, to sit on the Nordic Strategy Steering Committee. -

Overview Ontario has identified and compiled safety guidelines and protocols that have been independently established by leaders in the sport and recreation sector to ensure that Ontarians can safely return to play. These resources are available to the public and to stakeholders in the sport and recreation sector, and will help Ontarians better understand how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while training, practicing and competing in sport and recreation activities. Resources are available from National Sport Organizations (NSO), Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO), the sport and recreation sector to support a safe return to play. They contain recommendations and tips for athletes, coaches and trainers and facility owners on how to keep all participants safe. Facility owners are also responsible for ensuring that all activities are conducted in a manner that maintains physical distancing and upholds public health measures outlined in the Emergency Order. Nordiq Canada Competition Officials Manual A Technical Manual for the Organization of Cross Country Ski Events Version 4.016, August 2020 Alan White, Editor Nordiq Canada Competition Officials Manual August 2020 | i Preface This publication has been prepared for the Events Committee of Nordiq Canada. It is designed to facilitate the development of a “Canadian Standard” for the officiating of Cross Country Ski competitions. Preparation of this material has involved officials from across the country - people who have a great deal of experience in race and event organization, from club to international events. This version of the Manual tries to reflect the changes that have occurred over the past decade since the last edition. These changes include the use of sophisticated equipment and technology for highly-precise timing and very fast results production, as well as new formats of races. As a result, officials in this sport must also be kept up to date in order to be able to officiate in all levels of events. The Manual has been kept as ‘technology neutral’ as possible because we never know what advances in technology may bring before the Manual is updated. It is assumed that officials will develop expertise outside the contents of this Manual when it comes to handling technology. This Manual has evolved with the premise that the way to run and officiate a cross country ski race at any level is best reflected in the way to run a national championship. World Cups, World Championships and Olympics involve processes and resources of the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS) which do not apply to domestic events. -
