2 Lent C 19 – Second Sunday of Lent – Luke 9: 28b-36

Today, I want to lead us all through a guided meditation format used by St. Ignatius Loyola, with a Gospel-focused design that draws us more deeply into the joy of Christ’s love for God & all.. So, I invite you to clear your laps, place your hands unfolded comfortably in your laps, sit up straight; if your feet can touch the floor, put them there. We’ll take a few breaths in, and out…and keep going…

Let’s enter our meditation. U R walking UP the mountain, 2pray with Jesus & Peter, James & John. As U climb toward the mountaintop, U feel your legs getting tired. You pause & breathe easy: in/out. U realize Jesus is lifting YOU up on high, to fill YOU with the fullness of God’s love/strength. Yes: Jesus came to LIFT UP all those beaten down by life, those who have had repeated tragedies, those whose self-esteem has been flattened by others, those who can’t take of their families/friends. Take a moment to thank Jesus for lifting U up on high, to unite you with God our Loving Creator [p]. U reach the level ground at the mountain top. You feel the wind, in your hair & all around you. & as you stand next 2Jesus, who lifts his hands in prayer, & you see his face change: he is bright white.

You can see that Jesus is glowing from the inside out: he’s shining so bright you can hardly stand it. You SEE Jesus is GOD’S SON, & the light that lights up His face is GOD’S divine light from within. As Jesus looks at you, HE knows that YOU KNOW what He said was true: Jesus IS the face of God. Take a moment: tell Jesus you believe in Him: tell him He’s your shepherd & savior & redeemer: tell him you want to follow him in every way; you want to imitate his love for others. [pause]

Peter says out loud what other people might be feeling: we want to stay here on this mountain top. . We know this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, like our best vacation, retreat, or spiritual event. We wish today could last forever. We remember how it felt to leave those good experiences behind. And then, God’s loud & clear voice comes from the heavens, the One reminding us to listen to Jesus, We all become silent again. Each of us has things we’ve heard Jesus say, but haven’t put into practice. Now is the time to show our God we DO listen to Jesus, and we DO hear what he says. So in silence: Be a Promise Keeper: Tell Jesus the name of one person you’ll pray for in this coming week. [pause] And now, tell Jesus one sin/fault/bad attitude you will work on to be rid of this week. [pause]

As we finish praying, Jesus is there, alone with us. God’s powerful light in HIM has gone inside Him. . We’re still amazed that we’ve seen what we saw today: the glory of God shining in Jesus. We start to understand that Jesus wasn’t just showing us HIS future: he was showing us OUR future, the SAME glory that Jesus promises for us after we experience His complete Freedom and Inner Joy. And that FUTURE is NOT NOW: it’s NOT up here on the mountain, it’s not with tents and booths. Jesus has MORE work to do: to live, to teach, pray, preach, and 2go to Jerusalem 2 face his enemies..

As we conclude our meditation: we feel good that we’ve spoken to Jesus during our prayer time today. We’ve told Jesus what we’re going to do this week, & asked him for the strength to be faithful to God. We feel our feet press against the floor; our body relaxes; we slowly open our eyes & adjust 2the light. We know that just as Jesus’ face was changed, he calls us to be changed, to be different from others, to be more loving to others, especially to those that are on the margins of society and of our lives. We know we can depend on Jesus, because Jesus is always with us, the guardian that never sleeps.

The Outcomes of the Clergy Sex Summit Held by Francis with Worldwide Bishop Leaders: A Summary from Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn

My dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, The recent meet- ing held by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, on the Protection of Minors in the Church, commonly known as the sex abuse sum- mit, has not received very favorable coverage in the press. Therefore, I will attempt to explain what actually was accom- plished at the meeting and how our own efforts here in the United States... have already implemented much of what was suggested at the Summit... the Holy Father personally an- nunciated 21 items that he believes would be important in combating sexual abuse of all kinds around the world. These points were formulated by the various commissions and episco- pal conferences that the Holy Father consulted with, before the meeting in . I wish to concentrate by explaining the Holy Father’s 21 points. They have been summarized in eight general categories which make the 21 points a bit easier to comprehend. They are:

“A ‘change of mentality’ to focus on protecting children rather than ‘protecting the institution.’”

“A recognition of the ‘impeccable seriousness’ of these ‘sins and crimes of consecrated persons.’”

“A genuine purification beginning with ‘self-accusation.’”

“Positive formation of candidates for the priesthood in the virtue of Chastity”

“Strengthening and reviewing of guidelines by episcopal conferences, reaffirming the need for ‘rules’”

“The accompaniment of those who have been abused with an empha- sis on listening.”

“Ensure that seminarians and clergy are not enslaved to an addiction to pornography”

“Combat sexual tourism around the world” and also trafficking of minors for the purpose of sexual abuse”

Bishop DiMarzio concludes his summary this way:

“Abuse is not a problem only of the perpetrators. It is a chal- lenge to the whole Church and we must become a community aware and astute in changing the culture that allows abuse to occur. We must take every opportunity we can, especially dur- ing Lent, to pray and fast in solidarity with the whole Church as we undergo conversion and find new ways to renew our com- mitment to protecting God’s children.

Lent is an opportunity for us to put out into the deep waters of reflection as a Church and as individuals, so that as Easter comes we will be stronger in our faith and support those whose faith has been challenged. For those whose faith has been weak- ened by this scandal, we must address the obstacles to the prac- tice of faith that some of the faithful have experienced.” Taken from The Brooklyn Tablet, dated March 13, 2019.
