DE LA GUERRA Y PACHECO CHAPTER 1.5 (Chartered 1991) (Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties and the Channel and Sandwich Islands) 7. DE LA GUERRA Y PACHECO CHAPTER 1.5 (Chartered 1991) (Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties and the Channel and Sandwich Islands) 1. SANTA CRUZ ISLAND COMPANY WINERY, Santa Barbara Channel, 10/25/1987 "SANTA CRUZ ISLAND COMPANY WINERY. In 1884 Justinian Caire brought slips of wine grape vines from France to Santa Cruz Island and planted about 200 acres in the Main Ranch Valley. The wine, considered very good, was shipped in 5 gallon casks to San Francisco until operations were shut down by the 18th Amendment. When prohibition was re- pealed, wine was again produced but not of the same fine quality. No wine was produced after 1937. The wineries were gutted by fire in 1950, destroying all of the 19th century wine making equipment. Dedicated this 25th day of October 5992 by the MostImportant Committee of Los Bastardos Barbarenos, Platrix Chapter #2, E Clampus Vitus. 'Credo Quia Absurdum. '" (Los Bastardos Barbarenos later became de la Guerra y Pacheco Chapter 1.5.) (Plaque, tile, located on Santa Cruz Island.) 2. THE ROCHIN ADOBE, Santa Barbara County, 7/16/1988 "THE ROCHIN ADOBE. In 1856 Senor Jose Maria Rochin purchased for $50 the first parcel of land sold within the Presidio boundaries. '1 st day of October 1856, between the mayor and common council of the city of Santa Barbara of the first part and Jose Maria Rochin of the second part, for consideration of $30, Santa Barbara property. Signed Fran- cisco Ruiz, Presidente del Consejo and Antonio Maria de La Guerra, mayor.' On the 250' by 120' lot a three-room house was constructed of adobe brick salvaged from the ruins of struc- tures built against the southeast presidio walls. Originally built at an angle following the presidio walls, a portion of the porch was lost when the street was graded to the 1851 Haley survey specifications. Note that the porch roof overhang is still at the original angle. The rear section of the adobe and a protective 57 siding were added in 1901 by F. L. Birabent, the son-in-law of 5. Jose and Lorenza. The Rochin Adobe has remained in the family for 135 years. May it continue thus. Dedicated July 16, 1988, The Vituscan Missionaries ofPlatrix Chapter, EClampus Vitus." MASINI ADOBE, Santa Barbara County, 12/211989 "Built in 1820 on part of the Ortega Ranch, this is one of the few surviving two-story adobes and is an excellent example of the cantilevered balcony style of Monterey Architecture. The adobe has had few owners in its 169 years. Newton Coats purchased it in 1858 when he got the 180-acre Las Fuentes Ranch (now Birnam Wood). Pedro Masini purchased the adobe and 37 acres from Coats in 1869. His daughter sold it in 1878 to Josefa Etchas and it has remained in the family since then. In December 1881, Giovanni B. Trabucco was found murdered in the kitchen. His assailants had tortured him in hopes of finding a cache of gold he had hidden on the property. Five Montecito youths were charged with the murder, but released for lack of evidence. The gold was never found. If anyone finds the gold, please turn it over to the local chapter of E Clampus Vitus so that it can be returned to its rightful owner. Dedicated to the present owners: the Meyers Family this 2nd day of December, 1989. de la Guerra y Pacheco Chapter 1.5, E Clampus Vitus." 5.BRANCHFAMIL YCEMETERY, SanLuis Obispo County, (Plaque located at Montecito, near Highway 101, corner of 311711991 Sheffield Drive and Jameson Lane.) THE PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTOR INFORMATION, OPINION, AND ADVICE FOR COLLECTORS, CURATORS, AND DEALERS N E W S L T R Volume XLI, Nos. 7 & 8 Summer 2020 AUCTION REPORTS AND PREVIEWS IN THE AGE OF COVID-19 by Stephen Perloff Edward Burtynsky: Colorado River Delta #2, Near San Felipe, Baja, Mexico, 2011 ($15,000–$25,000) sold well above estimate for $52,500 at Christie’s, New York City. SPRING AUCTION REPORT continued Peter Beard: But past who can recall or done undo (Paradise Lost), 1977 ($70,000–$100,000) found a buyer at $118,750 at Christie’s, New York City. Christie’s online Photographs sale ending June 3 totaled $2,422,125 with a 50% buy-in rate. There were a few good results, but overall this must have been a disappointment to both Chris- tie’s and its consignors. In these unprecedented times this is not a reflection of just Christie’s, but a sober reflection on the state of the photography market. Clearly safe bets like Irving Penn and Peter Beard were at the top of the heap, but at prices well below the highs of just a year or two ago. Still, it is heartening to see that Penn’s Small Trades series is getting the recognition that his other series have had. The top ten were: • Peter Beard: But past who can recall or done undo (Paradise Lost), 1977 ($70,000– $100,000) at $118,750 • Irving Penn: Rag and Bone Man, London, 1951 ($40,000–$60,000) at $106,250 Irving Penn: Rag and Bone Man, London, 1951 IN THIS ISSUE ($40,000–$60,000) collected a bid of $106,250 at Christie’s, New York City.

  • Eadweard Muybridge on Donner Summit
March, 2018 issue #115 Eadweard Muybridge on Donner Summit At some point in my life when I was able I tuned in to "Bonanza" the TV show about a father, his three grown sons, the Ponderosa Ranch, and their adventures around Virginia City and Lake Tahoe. There was a new adventure every week and to make the new adventure every week, the writers brought in guest stars because there were only so many stories the Cartwrights could get into themselves. It seemed to me that everyone famous visited the Ponderosa: gypsies, Emperor Norton, a president, criminals, etc. In studying Donner Summit history a lot of people kept dropping by too. Mark Twain took the stage over Donner Summit a couple of times. The Central Pacific’s Big Four were here. Famous artists visited and did art work. Famous photographers visited and fortunately documented Donner Summit for us. There were authors, a vice president, a famous dog musher, famous skiers, Snow Shoe Thompson, record setters in various fields, industrialists, the Donner Party rescuees, members of the State legislature, etc. (I was going to list more but you get the point). One of the visitors was Eadweard Muybridge, famous 19th Century photographer. It would be nice to discover some of Mr. Muybridge’s experiences on Donner Summit. The DSHS research team set off looking for information on the internet and in that older technology, books. Besides some Muybridge photographs on Donner Summit the internet does not divulge anything about Muybridge visits. That’s when we turned to the bookstore and picked up The Inventor and the Tycoon.
