A similar entry of cull cows to recent weeks met a decent trade with well-covered cows selling to best advantage. Super cows from Messrs. C.R. & I.E. White of Helston saw their Limousin x selling to a premium to 133p/kg to David King of Exeter and huge 862kg Charolais x top value at £1,017 purchased by David Ellis of Lelant. Leading Friesian for Messrs. P.J. Grylls & Sons of Kenwyn selling at 106p/kg to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. A tremendous South Devon bull from Mr. T.G. Hawke of Colan tipped the scales at 1211kg and at 89p/kg realised £1,078 to David King of Exeter.

The best entry of the Autumn which included the 3rd Prize Sale of Suckled Calves saw a huge crowd enthusiastically bidding on all that was on offer. Prices achieved were excellent. Highlight of the stores were an entry of 18 month old Limousin x steers from Mr. R.E. Richards of St. Keverne which saw best trio hit £1,045 with a further four at £1,005 and a 13½ month old single Limousin x steer for Messrs. C.R. & I.E. White of Helston making £950. Store heifers topped at £790 for a 14 month old Limousin x pair for Mr. D.G. Kitchen of Nancegollan. A single February-born steer to kick-off a sensational run of calves for Mr. G.W. Boundy of St. Columb set the trade alight at £900 and saw half a dozen young steers £800+ and a further 10 over £770!! Suckled heifer calves topped at £745 for 10 month old Charolais x pair from Messrs. C.R. & I.E. White of Helston.

SPECIAL OCTOBER BEEF BREEDING SALE (34 HEAD)

A fine entry of stock for this Special Sale with a run of South Devons for Mr. R. Clemens of St. Ervan, (reducing herd numbers) seeing the top price of £1,480 for a Pedigree South Devon cow with her steer calf. For the same vendor a South Devon bulling heifer realised £1,100 and another Pedigree South Devon cow and steer calf made £1,400.

A run of young cows and calves for Mr. I.G. Michell of Nancegollan, Helston sold to a top of £920 for both a British Blue x cow and steer calf and Simmental x cow and calf. Other strong prices for Mr. Michell saw £910 for an Aberdeen Angus x cow and calf. A batch of older Limousin x cows and calves for Messrs. B.K. & E.L. Piper of Sithney, Helston topped at £810 and £770. - 5 - -

3RD PRIZE SALE OF SUCKLED CALVES

The 3rd Suckled Calf Prize Sale met with the best entry yet of over 250 suckled calves for our Special Charolais & Limousin Society sponsored day and a packed ring of buyers with a continued firm trade throughout. Calves sold well with prices similar or even better than those seen at this time last year in the various classes.

SOUTH WEST LIMOUSIN CATTLE BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

The Association kindly donated £50 for the best priced Limousin-sired suckled calves and this was achieved by a standout steer calf from Mr. G.W. Boundy of St. Columb which realised £900 claiming Class 3 and being the dearest of the day!! Rosettes for 2nd and 3rd placed cattle go to steers from Mr. G.W. Boundy at £790 in both Class 1 and Class 3.
