They are titled The Great R&B Files at http://www.rhythm-and- blues.info/ covering the history of Rhythm & Blues in its classic era (1940s, especially 1950s, and through to the 1960s). I myself have used the ”new covers” shown here for printouts on all volumes. If you prefer prints of the series, you only have to printout once, since the updates, amendments, corrections, and supplementary information, starting from August 2019, are published in this special extra volume, titled ”Updates & Amendments to the Great R&B Files” (book #13). BID JANUARY RARE SOUL AUCTION & A EARL JACKSON SOUL SELF SATISFACTION ABC 11142 WD VG++ 559 After all these years, Jackson is still a mystery man, a singer called Larry Marks recorded the flipside ‘Looking Thru The Eyes Of Love’, but it’s a different version and we are fairly sure its not him. Whatever the truth, this is mighty, mighty Northern Soul from the pen, producing and arranging skills of the legendary Johnny Pate. Just one small mark on this one, other than that, a minter! B LIFE TELL ME WHY REPRISE 1185 WD M- 150 It’s a while since we had an original copy of this, one of the first modern spins on the scene and virtually unobtainable even as a new 1974, release. Quite easy to tell the original from the bootie – the original is truly stereo/mono on each side whereas the boot says such but is actually, mono both sides. You’ll get this in an original sleeve; don’t you just hate the pretentious term “birth-sleeve” as used by a certain crazed East Midlands record dealer? C MARY LOU WILLIAMS YOU KNOW BABY MARY 1976 M- 450 AND GROUP Featuring the vocals of Leon Thomas who had a few good 45s to his name on Flying Dutchman, Don King and Now Sound, this must be his first recording and its solid sixties all the way.

The album is the brainchild of Rounder Records’ Scott Billington and Irma Thomas, ‘the reigning soul queen of most of the songs ‘work’, although Paul New Orleans’ paid a flying visit to London and I have different favourites. in June, accompanied by her husband, Emile. The main purpose of the visit was to attend the Mojo Music Magazine Awards Ceremony on 16th June where Irma collected her ‘Legend’ award. We also asked Irma about New Orleans now and her own plans for the future. Well, as has been reported elsewhere, her Club – ‘The Lion’s Den’, wrecked by Katrina has gone for good and she has no intention of opening another. However, she was positive about the City’s future, whilst acknowledging that some ‘refugees’ would never return. I did get a telling-off when I commented on the lack of black faces on the Thursday and Friday of the second © Paul Harris weekend of this year’s JazzFest: ‘Well, they’ll have been working!’ She doesn’t suffer fools (like me) gladly, but apart However, Irma also took the opportunity from that, Irma received us with grace to promote her forthcoming album and charm, and looked as radiant and ‘Simply Grand’ scheduled for August stunning as ever – truly a glam’ granny release.

  • 1 from the Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock Simon Frith and William Straw, Editors Soul Into Hip-Hop Russell A. Potter Rhode
From The Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock Simon Frith and William Straw, editors Soul into Hip-Hop Russell A. Potter Rhode Island College Call it soul, call it funk, call it hip-hop; the deep-down core of African-American popular music has been both a center to which performers and audiences have continually returned, and a centrifuge which has sent its styles and attitudes outwards into the full spectrum of popular music around the world. The pressure -- both inward and outward -- has often been kept high by an American music industry slow to move beyond the apartheid-like structures of its marketing systems, which, though ostensibly abandoned in the days since the "race records" era (the 1920's through the 1950's), continue to shadow the industry's practices. However much cross-over there has been between black and white audiences, the continual reiteration of racial and generic boundaries in radio formats, retailing, and chart-making has again and again forced black artists and producers to navigate between a vernacular aesthetic (often invoked as "the street") and what the rapper Guru calls "mass appeal" -- the watering-down of style targeted at an supposedly "broader" (read: white) audience. So it has been that, within black communities, there has been an ongoing need to name and claim a music whose strategic inward turns refused what was often seen as a "sell-out" appeal to white listeners, a music that set up shop right in the neighborhood, via black (later "urban contemporary") radio, charts, and retailers, and in the untallied vernacular traffic in dubbed tapes, DJ mixes, and bootlegs.

Jeff Kollath, Stax Museum, Charles Huges, Rhodes College. So Mr. Thigpen, thank you for sharing your morning with us. We'll start very simply just tell us about yourself you know, start at the beginning. Henderson Thigpen: You want to know how I got started in this whole music thing. I didn't tell you this when we met before in black Churches we have a thing called children's day we you have to get up and recite poems in front of the congregation. So, I would of wrote my own poems and it made my mom proud and I got to the point for them to tutor me on to recite so I would read mine. Then, at sixteen [1:00] I thought I was in love with this women that was twenty something and my mom found out about it and it was a very bad thing for a sixteen-year-old to be talking to a twenty-year-old. So, I wrote this song which was really a poem about that situation and was crushed but now I'm over it, and now I'm here. Then, I continued to write poems and someone told me I need to some with them, but I didn’t know what to do with them because I didn’t play with them like how I sound as a singer.
