Degree: Bachelor of Arts in International Studies (BAIS) Major: International Studies – Middle East/African Studies Focus

General Requirements for Catalogs: 2010-2012, 2012-2014, 2014-2016

1. Minimum required: 120 semester hours; 36 hours advanced coursework (at least 24 advanced hours must be completed at TX State, including at least 12 advanced hours completed in the major); 9 hours intensive writing coursework; a minor is optional but not required; IS majors must have 3.00 TX State and 3.00 Major GPA (includes IS Core and Focus Courses; transfer grades are counted in Major GPA). For residency and other graduation requirements, see the academic policies for the University, College of Liberal Arts, and Center for International Studies in the 2014-2016 Undergraduate Catalog (hereinafter referred to as “the Catalog”).

2. All majors must complete the General Education Core Requirements as listed in the Catalog. It is recommended that GEO 1310 be selected from the Social and Behavioral Sciences Component because it is also an International Studies Core requirement. Also, although MATH 1316 will count for core, it is not recommended for this major because it does not meet the prerequisite requirements for the required economics course s. It is assumed, but not required, that all general education core requirements will be completed before achieving full IS major status.

3. International Studies majors are required to complete the special requirements in science, modern language, and English for t he Bachelor of Arts listed under the Degrees and Programs section of the Catalog. For International Studies majors, the list of approved additional science courses under that section is expanded to include statistics. Course options are included in the “Additional BA Requirements” list below.

4. The 17-hour language requirement must be completed in the same Modern Language. Consult with your academic advisor if an advanced course is not available in your language. Foreign language credit from high school will not count for the IS major. It is recommended that students begin the foreign language requirement in their first semester of study at Texas State.

5. Honors courses are highly encouraged, but credit in the IS major must be pre-approved by the Director of the Center for International Studies in consultation with an academic advisor. Honors College requirements and approvals apply.

6. International Study is highly encouraged. Consult with your academic advisor and the Study Abroad Office for more informatio n. http://www.studyabroad.txstate.edu/. Study abroad programs that are not offered by Texas State must be evaluated by the Study Abroad Office, Undergraduate Admissions, and your academic advisor, in consultation with the Director of the Center for International Studies, for transferability to Texas State and to the IS major.

7. Note: Effective Fall 2012, all International Studies majors are required to complete a global academic experience that can be fulfilled by a study abroad course or the IS 4687, International Studies Internship, if it entails international work, service, or group research. Consult with an academic advisor for options.

Additional BA Requirements 3 hours Science CIS 1323, CS 1308, GEO 2410, PHIL 2330, Math, Natural Science, or a statistics course (QMST 2333, SOCI 3307, GEO 3301, POSI 3377, CJ 3347, HP 3302, MATH 2358, and MATH 3305). 3 hours English Literature ENG 2310, 2320, 2330, 2340, 2359, 2360. This is in addition to the three hours English sophomore literature required for the general education core. Modern Language 2310 & 2320 Sophomore level courses from the same modern language. The freshman level courses 1410 & 1420 are considered prerequisites, but are factored into the 120 hours required for this degree.
