  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

Corruption as Shared Culpability: Religion, Family, and Society in Andrey Zvyagintsev's Leviathan (2014) Abstract This article engages in close analysis of how Andrey Zvyagintsev depicts corruption and its various manifestations: moral, familial, societal, and institutional, in Leviathan (Leviafan, 2014). While other post- Soviet films address the problem of prevalent corruption in Russia, Zvyagintsev’s work is the first ot provoke strong public reactions, not only from government and Russian Orthodox Church officials, but also from Orthodox and political activist groups. The film demonstrates that the instances of legal and moral failings in one aspect of existence are a sign of a much deeper and wider-ranging problem that affects all other spheres of human experience.

NAOSHIMA Written by Martin Provost and Séverine Werba A film by Martin Provost 7 avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt 75008 Paris +33 1 55 34 98 08 - [email protected] SAS au capital de 45 000 € - RCS 813 251 535 - APE 5911 C - TVA FR44 813 251 535 Two French women, Irène, a renowned sexologist, and Joséphine, her interpreter, meet by chance in Japan, go in search of a lost and future love, and discover, beyond temporality, the mysterious and marvelous ties that unite all human beings. 2 CASTING CATHERINE DENEUVE as IRÈNE 3 SANDRINE KIBERLAIN as JOSÉPHINE 4 NOTE OF INTENT I went to Japan for the first time 4 years ago with my film “Violette”. I took advantage of the trip to take a break there for 3 weeks. I, of course, went to visit Kyoto and its temples, the Emperor’s marvelous gardens, but I also endeavored to get off the beaten track by going to visit Ozu’s grave in Kamakura, by walking through the wild forests, by spending the night in a traditional Osen usually reserved for the Japanese and by trying to immerse myself in the simplest fashion in this culture that seemed so foreign to me. And then I went to Naoshima. It was a very powerful experience. On this industrial island, one man, Soichiro Fukutake, had had the brilliant idea of asking Tadao Ando to design a modern and contemporary art center in the midst of nature. I live in France very close to Giverny where Monet painted his famous Waterlilies. His landscapes are familiar to me because, like him before, I live just on the banks of the Seine, very close to the church of Vétheuil, where he had his first house, in the hills of Chantemesle which he painted so often.

  • PAUL BRADY Paul Brady, Singer, Songwriter and Multi-Instrumentalist Is One of Ireland’S Most Enduringly Popular Artists
PAUL BRADY Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is one of Ireland’s most enduringly popular artists. Born and raised in Strabane, Northern Ireland, on the border with the Irish Republic, he was into a wide variety of music from an early age. A Fifties child, his first sounds the Swing, Jazz, Show tunes of his parents generation. Then 50′s Rock ‘n Roll, 60′s pop and Motown, Blues, R’nB and Country and Western. Through all this ran the potent flavour of Irish traditional music and song. Learning to play the piano pretty much by ear, trial and error, his early heroes were Jerry Lee Lewis, Winifred Atwell and Fats Domino. By the age of eleven he had begun to play guitar, spending hours of his school holidays learning every tune the Shadows and The Ventures recorded, every lick Chuck Berry played. Mid-teens saw him take summer jobs playing piano and guitar in Bundoran, a seaside resort in nearby County Donegal. But it was around 1965 in Dublin, at college, that he began to develop as a singer and performer joining a succession of R’n B / Soul bands including The Inmates, The Kult and Rootzgroop , covering the songs of Ray Charles, James Brown, Junior Walker and blues legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry.
