Received t SUMMAKT - The gas velocity fields in the barred spiral galaxies NGC 7496 and 289 have been measured by means of long-slit spectra obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Pronounced deviations fro« circular motion of the type predicted by recent theoretical mooels are seen in NGC 74961 the isovelocity contours are distorted into a characteristic S-shaped pattern and there is a large velocity gradient across the bar. The velocity field is virtually identical to that of a previously observed barred spiral, NGC 5383 for which a number of models have been published. The nuclear [OUI] emission lines are very asymmetric with a wing extending to about 1000 km s-1 to the blue of the systemic velocity; this wing is only faintly seen in the Balmer lines. NGC 289 has a much smaller bar *nd consequently the noncircular motions are less pronounced. The most obvious effect is that the Xinematic major and minor axes are not perpendicular which is a signature of oval distortions. Both galaxies have a mass (within the 10 outermost velocity measurement) of 9 x iO M0 and M/Lß » 6. -

My Finest NGC Album A detailed record of my journey through The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada’s Finest NGC list Name: ______________________________ Centre or Home Location: ______________________________ The New General Catalogue or NGC contains 7,840 entries and forms the core of most people's " life list" of observing targets. The NGC was originally published in 1888 by J.L.E. Dreyer and therefore predated photographic astronomy. The Finest NGC list, compiled by Alan Dyer complements the Messier List, as there is no overlap. The list features many fine deep-sky treasures as well as a few somewhat more challenging objects. Once you have observed all of the objects on this list, application forms can be found on the RASC website at www.rasc.ca. The FNGC certificate has been awarded since 1995. Here is an overview of the Finest NGC Observing List Finest NGC Objects Number Notes Open Clusters 12 Including the famous Double Cluster in Perseus, NGC 7789 in Cassiopeia, and NGC 6633 in Ophiuchus. STECHER8 Received 2000 May 11; accepted 2000 October 31 ABSTRACT The dynamic orchestration of star-birth activity in the starburst-ringed galaxy M94 (NGC 4736) is investigated using images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT; far-ultraviolet [FUV] band), Hubble Space Telescope (HST ; near-ultraviolet [NUV] band), Kitt Peak 0.9 m telescope (Ha, R, and I bands), and Palomar 5 m telescope (B band), along with spectra from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) and the Lick 1 m telescope. The wide-Ðeld UIT image shows FUV emission from (1) an elongated nucleus, (2) a di†use inner disk, where Ha is observed in absorption, (3) a bright inner ring of H II regions at the perimeter of the inner disk (R \ 48A \ 1.1 kpc), and (4) two 500 pc size knots of hot stars exterior to the ring on diametrically opposite sides of the nucleus (R \ 130A \ 2.9 kpc). -

Laurikainen Division of Astronomy, Department of Physical Sciences, University of Oulu, Oulu FIN-90014, Finland Received 2005 March 11; accepted 2005 April 18 ABSTRACT The distribution of bar strengths in disk galaxies is a fundamental property of the galaxy population that has only begun to be explored. We have applied the bar-spiral separation method of Buta and coworkers to derive the distribution of maximum relative gravitational bar torques, Qb, for 147 spiral galaxies in the statistically well- defined Ohio State University Bright Galaxy Survey (OSUBGS) sample. Our goal is to examine the properties of bars as independently as possible of their associated spirals. We find that the distribution of bar strength declines smoothly with increasing Qb, with more than 40% of the sample having Qb 0:1. -
