Free Press sports writer Mark Snyder breaks down five story lines to watch in today’s game.

UM_090713_ND_JHG Ground gain

Michigan desperately wants to be a power running team and Notre Dame didn’t allow much — 166 yards on the ground, just 70 from the tailback spot. Given Akron’s 172.5 rushing yards allowed per game, this is a chance to work the backs behind the developing offensive line.

Rushing in

The Wolverines’ defensive line still has not produced the way the coaches expected in the preseason. U-M has five sacks, but three came after the Central Michigan game was already out of hand. The idea of the defensive line rotation is to keep everyone fresh enough for constant QB pressure.

Seeing Green

Much like the Central Michigan game, the earlier the Wolverines grab a big lead, the better it is for the backups to get game experience. No. 2 tailback Derrick Green

, QB and a few of the other younger players could use the work.

A little help

For all of receiver ’s talent, he’s going to be the defense’s target every week. That makes it critical to discover a second receiver, whether it’s Joe Reynolds, Jehu Chesson or using tight end downfield.

Health check

There’s virtually no scenario where U-M can lose this game, so the most important thing is making sure no one gets hurt. A sprained ankle, a pulled hamstring or even something more

serious could turn this into a long-term disaster. There’s no good way to avoid accidental injuries, other than pulling starters as soon as possible.
