Introduction First of all, we are pleased to present the 2017 Wine Collection in a brand new format, especially designed and created with the help of our professional bookbinder Glenn Malkin, who has crafted our new cover to an exact specification. At Askham Hall we aim to provide quality wines expressive of each region they represent. This is all made possible by Charles Lowther, whose unbridled passion for wine allows us to track down wines of distinct character and bring to you a list that displays a cross-section of the ever expanding and amazing World of Wine. And although we cover the majority of the World’s wine growing countries, we are especially proud of our selection of old world classic wines, notably Bordeaux and Burgundy, and hope to enthral with our vintages dating back to 1893 (Clos de Gamot, Cahors). To help with this collection we are lucky enough to have access to some of the treasures of the Lowther family’s private cellar. Nothing excites us more than sharing our passion for wine so please don’t have any hesitation in asking advice or questions regarding your selection and we will happily recommend something to suit your taste, budget and, most importantly, Chef Richard’s menu. To help with your selection, we have arranged all our sub-sections in ascending price order apart from the Bordeaux Reds, where we take you from 1916 to 2012. If perhaps there’s a wine you have been fond of in the past and haven’t been able to find on our list we would love to hear about it and could always try to source it for your return visit. Nico Chièze Richard Bracken Maître de Maison/House Manager Assistant House Manager and Head Sommelier 2004/06 Winner: Scotland and Northern England Regional Final, Sommelier of the Year WSET Level 3, Introductory Court of Master Sommeliers Charles Lowther: “I was brought up on a diet of mature Margaux and Saint Estèphe, two of my Father’s favourites. My palate, therefore, grew to enjoy softer structured wines and I came to absolutely adore burgundy as well as these famous clarets.” Nico Chièze: “I have a personal interest in the wine of the Loire Valley as it is where I was born and brought up. In my young sommelier career however, I had the privilege to work for 3 years in Bordeaux in the famous Pauillac appellation. I therefore have an in depth passion and knowledge for Bordeaux wines and love the magic of opening an old and historic wine for a ‘bonne dégustation’!” Richard Bracken: “My training and development here at Askham Hall has led to me having a real affinity to classic wines and styles. Through my recent travel and stages at restaurants in the capital though, I have found an interest in the diversity of lesser known grapes and wine producing regions that are gaining a reputation within the trade for making exciting and innovative wine.” We believe that together we have a perfect balance of tastes to create a diverse list of interest to all. If you take our tasting menu a matching wine flight is available for £35. We are very proud to use the Coravin wine opening system here at Askham Hall. This is a device which allows us to open wine without taking the cork out, which in turn enables us to pour a glass of any wine over a long period of time and not risk the wine losing any of its qualities. Below is our current selection but we have the ability to open far more wines from the cellar if you would like. Look out for our Port selection at the end of the list, where we serve all our bottles by the glass. All our wines served by Coravin are a 100ml measure.
