2012 ANNUAL REPORT Contributing to the future of health care in Dear friends,

Thank you to the 380 Nebraska Hospital Association Political Action Committee (NHA PAC) contributors—an increase of 7 percent—for your generous support in 2012. The NHA PAC raised $47, 463, a 3.4 percent increase over 2011. We would like to thank the NHA PAC Steering Committee for its outstanding leadership and guidance, which continues to fuel our success.

State and federal governments pay for well over half of hospital care in Nebraska and regulate 100 percent of our activities. Those are the main reasons why the work of the Nebraska Hospital Association and its political action committee is so important.

The goals and objectives of NHA PAC are fairly simple. We raise money to help support political candidates who share our belief that state and federal health policy should maximize our ability to improve health care in the communities we serve.

Political advocacy has never been as important as it is today. State and federal budgets are being stretched to the breaking point and, as usual, health care is in the crosshairs to help offset these problems.

It is critical that elected individuals making decisions have a passion and understanding for the unique role hospitals play in ensuring the quality of life in their communities when budget decisions are debated in Washington and Lincoln.

Please take a moment to review this report, which provides an update of the NHA PAC contributors by hospital community, hospitals that met or exceeded goals, special recognition for the NHA PAC’s 2012 major donors and NHA PAC Pacesetter Award recipients.

We look forward to working with you in 2013.

Sincerely,

Laura J. Redoutey, FACHE President Nebraska Hospital Association

2 | NHA PAC 2012 Annual Report www.nhanet.org | 3 NHA PAC impacts legislative races

The NHA PAC had a significant impact on the 2012 legislative races, assisting in electing or re-electing several champions of responsible health care public policy.

In less than three years, the NHA PAC went from a start-up to an influential factor in state legislative races. The PAC contributed $47,500 to 14 legislative candidates in contested races — 13 were successful in their campaigns — four in their re-election bids and nine newly elected legislators:

Dist Candidate Contribution: Election results (unofficial) (Primary and *contribution recipients in bold general total) 1 (Syracuse) $1,500 Joy 6,834 (44.08%) Watermeier 8,669 (55.92%)

4 | NHA PAC 2012 Annual Report www.nhanet.org | 5 Several NHA PAC-supported candidates were involved in tight races, including Kate Bolz, Rich Kolowski, Galen Hadley and Sue Crawford, winning by narrow margins.

Because of insightful political leadership of the NHA PAC steering committee, the PAC was able to contribute $2,000 to each of four candidates in the days immediately preceding the election to help them cross the finish line victorious. Of those candidates, Bolz, Crawford and Kolowski gained legislative seats. Van Phillips was the only PAC- supported candidate not elected.

Without the PAC’s timely and substantial support, the outcomes could have been much different. Although we are celebrating the 93 percent success rate, now is not the time to rest, because as soon as one campaign cycle ends, the next one begins.

To be successful, the NHA and the NHA PAC must be involved in elections and advocacy 365 days a year.

In 2012, the NHA PAC raised $47,463 — $3,787 shy of its $51,250 goal.

Achieving or exceeding the NHA PAC goals for 2013 and building momentum for the 2014 election will be important. Although two years away, the NHA PAC is preparing for a very competitive governor’s race and the 24 legislative seats up for election in 2014, of which 17 will be open due to term limits.

While treasure is necessary, time and talent are also critical to the PAC’s continued success. Through the NHA’s board of directors, the NHA PAC, the Policy Development Committee and its priority issue teams, there are opportunities to help chart the course for responsible public policy that allows our hospitals to deliver care in the most efficient, effective way possible.

Stephen L. Goeser, FACHE 2012 NHA PAC Steering Committee Chair
