Key Contacts Game Day Communications is the public relations firm of record for the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G. Interview requests before and during Marathon weekend will be handled by Jackie Reau (513.708.5822 mobile) and Betsy Ross (513.535.5552 mobile). Please call the Game Day office at 513.929.4263 prior to Friday of Flying Pig weekend for media questions, and the mobile numbers on Marathon weekend.
Race Weekend Media Center A social media center with interview area will be open at the P&G Health & Fitness Expo, Duke Energy Convention Center, Cincinnati, on Friday and Saturday and will be staffed during Expo hours, noon to 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. A media representative also will be present Saturday at the Toyota 10K, Tri State Running Company 5K, Kids’ Marathon 26th Mile presented by EY, the PigAbilities division, Iams Flying Fur Run and the Walmart and Sam’s Club Family Festival and Flying Piglet, Sawyer Point. The Marathon Day media center will be accessible at the Finish Line area on Sunday. Winners will be brought to the media center.
Press Services Available Operational Services The media center on race day will have power, Wi-Fi capability for computer internet access and printer/copy services. Table space will be set aside for working media, and an interview area will be set up for winner debriefings.
Interviews Marathon officials, including Executive Director Iris Simpson Bush, will be available for interviews on Friday and Saturday. Special weekend guests of the Pig also will be available, and runners of human interest will be made available by request. Please let Game Day Communications know of any other runners you would like to be made available for pre-race interviews.
Race Day Viewing Media credentials will allow access to the Start Line by Paul Brown Stadium and Finish Line by U.S. Bank Arena. Television monitors will be set up at the Finish Line media center to follow coverage from media partner, WLWT-TV. A photo truck that travels ahead of the runners is available, in addition to a photo bridge at the finish line.
Media Center The Finish Line Media Center will be staffed from 4 a.m. on Sunday Race Day Morning until 2 p.m. Race Day Afternoon. Additional representatives will be at the start line.
Post-Race Interviews Winners of the Wheelchair, Marathon powered by P&G (men and women) and Paycor Half Marathon (men and women) will be brought to the Media Center immediately after their finishes. Requests for one-on-one interviews with other runners of interest to your media outlet must be made in advance of Race Day so we can monitor their progress and estimated finishing times.
3 MEDIA EVENTS, INTERVIEWS AND PHOTO OPPORTUNITES
The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G offers a number of opportunities for media coverage beyond the race itself. This is just an outline of some of the activities and human interest stories that surround the weekend:
Charities More than 250 charities use the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon as a fund raiser, from manning water stops to sponsoring runners who raise money through pledges. Charities range from high school booster groups to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Team in Training, the Marathon’s signature charity. In 2015 alone the Flying Pig raised nearly $1.5 million for charities.
Volunteers It takes some 6,500 volunteers to make the Marathon run smoothly each year. Many volunteers have been with the Marathon since the beginning. Jeanette Kiely is the Pig volunteer coordinator at [email protected].
Walkers The Marathon welcomes and encourages walkers for all divisions. The walkers will go off with the full marathon field at 6:30 a.m. The course will close on a continuous pace of 16:00 minutes per mile. Special training programs are offered to train the walkers for the 26.2 miles and can be found at www.flyingpigmarathon.com.
Marathon Founders The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon began with a group of local runners, a dream and a bar napkin with a Marathon route scrawled on it. Several of those original planners remain with the Marathon and are eager to share their story on how it all began, including Bob Coughlin, president of Paycor, and Bob Roncker, founder of The Running Spot.
Training Programs A training program is available for walkers and runners of all abilities. A number of area running stores and clubs schedule training programs for all distances at the Flying Pig.
Marathon Medal The Flying Pig Marathon medal is one of the most coveted medals among marathoners. Its unique 3-D design, with both the front and back of our distinctive ‘Pig,’ make the medals one of the most popular. Medals are given for all finishers.
The Pigs Our Marathon Race Day mascots have been at the finish ‘swine’ since its first year, and are usually in big demand for photos with the runners. You’ll see them at the Start and Finish lines, cheering the runners on.
4 Pump n’ Run The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is partnering again with the Lord’s Gym for a Pump n’ Run fund raising event, designed for runners, cross trainers and weight lifters. The PNR reduces a contestant's overall event run time, based on how many times he/she can bench press a percentage of their body weight. Originally just offered in the 5K, the Pump n’ Run now has expanded to every Marathon weekend event.
Old Spice High Endurance ‘Mile to the Finish’ Once again, Old Spice High Endurance will offer prizes to the men’s and women’s fastest final mile of the Marathon course.
Marathon poster Since the beginning of the Marathon, Tremor (formerly ‘mktg’ and CoActive Marketing Group) has designed the marketing ‘look’ of the Marathon, including the medal design and the commemorative poster. The poster is given to participants as part of their ‘goodie’ bags.
“Hams” at the Pig: Local “Ham” radio volunteers are positioned at each mile of the Marathon to provide safety updates along the course. Since the first Marathon in 1999, members of the Queen City Emergency Net have volunteered their time, services and equipment to the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon. The Net is a group of about 120 ham radio operators who assist the community during times of disaster, and during large-scale events like the Flying Pig Marathon.
The ‘Piggest’ Raffle Ever sponsored by Stock Yards Bank & Trust Charities throughout the Tri-State are selling chances for “The Piggest Raffle Ever” sponsored by Stock Yards Bank & Trust, featuring a pig drop Flying Pig weekend for a $10,000 cash prize split between the winner and the charity selling the ticket, a lease on a Toyota Prius and a Cincinnati Experience weekend. Now in its sixth year in 2016, the Piggest Raffle Ever has raised nearly $40,000 for participating charities and non-profits.
Little Kings Mile The first event of Flying Pig weekend is a mile dash to the riverfront, the Little Kings Mile. The Mile is the second event of the three-event Christian Moerlein Beer Series. The first event, the Bockfest 5K is held during Bockfest weekend in early March, and the final event, the Hudepohl 14K and 7K events are held the Saturday of Oktoberfest weekend.
IAMS Flying Fur Dog Run The IAMS Flying Fur Dog Run brings dogs and their handlers downtown for a quick two mile lap. For each dog registrant, IAMS donates a large bag of dog food to the Cincinnati SPCA.
But wait, there’s more.. The Flying Pig Marathon organizes the Queen Bee Half Marathon empowered by Kroger and P&G. Its inaugural run in 2014 sold out. This year it will be on Saturday, October 8. Learn more at www.queenbeehalf.com.

WHY 26.2 MILES? Most people assume that the Marathon distance of 26.2 miles represents the distance between the battlefields of Marathon and Athens that Pheidippedes supposedly ran to announce a Greek victory of the Persian army, but that’s not exactly true. When the Marathon was first introduced in the Olympic Games by Baron Pierre de Coubertin in 1896, the race was 40 kilometers – the actual distance between the two cities. However, the distance was changed in 1908 when the Olympics were held in London, England. Race organizers originally set the start in downtown Windsor but subsequently moved it to the lawn of Windsor Castle so the royal family could watch the start from their front porch. The finish line, however, remained the same so the race became 26 miles and 285 yards, the distance from the royal lawn to the finish line in Olympic Stadium.
HOW LONG IS 26.2 MILES? A basketball player would have to go baseline to baseline 1,471 times in a game to run a marathon distance… a major league baseball player would have to hit 385 home runs to cover the distance of a marathon… an NFL quarterback would have had to string together 231 200- yard passing games to reach the distance.

Flying Pig Toyota 10K ……………………………………………………………………………………………………8 a.m. The Flying Pig Toyota 10K, starting on Joe Nuxhall Way, is now the headline event on Marathon Saturday, kicking off a busy day of family activities leading up to Sunday’s Marathon. Finishers medals go to all participants.
Tri-State Running Company 5K and Walmart and Sam’s Club Family Fun Festival….…...10 a.m. The Tri State Running Company 5K, starting on Joe Nuxhall Way, is the fastest growing event of the weekend. Also starting at this time is the Walmart Family Fun Festival, Yeatman’s Cove.
Kids’ Marathon 26th Mile presented by EY…….……………………………………………………………….noon The Kids Marathon, starting on Joe Nuxhall Way, serves as the end of an incremental ‘marathon’ involving thousands of area school children over the three months leading up to the Flying Pig. Others just use the One Mile event as a fun run for all ages!
Flying Piglet Kids’ Fun Run…………………….……………………………………………..…..……………….1 p.m. The Flying Piglet Kids’ Fun Run featuring the Pampers Diaper Dash will begin with registration at 10 a.m. and activities starting at 1 p.m. along the riverfront in downtown Cincinnati. The Pampers Diaper Dash will start the competition for children under the age of one. The subsequent races will vary in distance and be divided by age groups: 1 p.m.- Mascot race, followed by Diaper Dash 15ft crawl or walk 1:15 p.m. - 2-3 year old 25 yards 1:30 p.m. - 4-5 year old 50 yards 1:45 p.m. - 6-7 year old 100 yards 2 p.m. - 8-9 year old 250 yards
Children over 9 years of age are invited to participate in the Kids’ Marathon one mile.
Additional activities will include special entertainment, appearances by some of Cincinnati’s favorite mascots, and exhibit booths with giveaways and important information for parents and children. On-site registration will be available. The release form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Each child will receive an official Flying Piglet running number, official finisher medal and an exclusive Piglet T-shirt.
IAMS Flying Fur Dog Run……………………………………………………………………………………………1:30 p.m. This two-mile run is a great time for you and your best friend! Dogs must be at least 6 months old and be able to walk or run two miles. Dogs should be able to be around large crowds, and must be on a leash (no retractable leashes allowed). Both dogs and their people will receive a finisher’s medal.
Walmart & Sam’s Club ‘Pig Out’ Pasta Party……………………………………………..5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The“Pig-Out” Pasta Party will be held Saturday, April 30. There will be two seatings: 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $20 for adults, $15 for children ages 3-12 and children under 3 are free. Paycor Half Marathon………………………………………………..………………………………………….6:30 a.m. The half marathon will start at 6:30 a.m. at the same time as the full marathon field. The two groups will run together for approximately nine miles, when the half marathon field will turn back toward downtown and end at the Marathon finish line along Yeatman's Cove. Walkers are welcome in the half marathon, as in all events.
Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G…………………………………………………………………..6:30 a.m. The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon starts along the Ohio River and “flies” along the streets of Cincinnati, Covington, and Newport. This race presents a well-balanced, diverse tour of some the finest neighborhoods in the area. This course is a Boston Qualifier.
Michelob Ultra Victory Party………………….………………………….………………………8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon Victory Party will be held near the finish line of the race in Yeatman’s Cove. The party will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. with music by “Snidley Whiplash,” awards ceremonies, food and fun.

The Flying Pig has always been an international event, with a dozen countries, plus the U.S., represented in the first event in 1999. MARATHON COURSE The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is a scenic riverside course which “flies” along the streets of Cincinnati, Covington, and Newport, and through Fairfax and Mariemont to the east. This race presents a well-balanced, diverse tour of some the finest neighborhoods in the area.
The race course finish line will remain open for seven hours, meaning that the course will close sequentially from the start line on a continuous pace of 16:00 minutes per mile. Anyone who cannot maintain the 16:00 min/mile pace must move to the sidewalk as the course closes to allow regular traffic through. Runner services cannot be guaranteed for participants beyond the 16:00 min/mile pace.
Volunteer medical services will be provided along the Marathon course. Athletic trainers from local and area colleges and universities will staff medical tents in strategic areas along the course, near fluid stops, to provide basic treatment and supplies such as bandages, wraps and Vaseline to runners. A more complete medical tent area will be set up in its usual location near the Finish Line for more comprehensive treatment of runners.
The End Result
The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon provides runners with accurate split times throughout the course and finish times. Chip mats will be placed at the Start, relay exchange zones, Old Spice Mile to the Finish and Finish. The Flying Pig Marathon uses End Result Company LLC, a national running and multi-sport service company specializing in timing, scoring, and related data.

THE CINCINNATI FLYING PIG CHARITY PROGRAM Cincinnati Marathon, Inc. is a non-profit 501©(3) organization formed to play host to a national sporting event which raises money for charities. More than 250 charities and non-profits take advantage of the Marathon and its related events to raise money for their causes. In 2015 the Flying Pig Marathon raised nearly $1.5 million for charity.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training Program is the signature charity of the Flying Pig Marathon. In addition, charities and non profits who offer volunteer services during Marathon weekend receive a charitable donation from the Marathon for their time.
STREET SQUEALERS The Pig’s spectator support is among the strongest among the Marathons. In fact, our spectators are called “Street Squealers.” From the neighbors in Hyde Park who cook breakfast along the Marathon route, to the retirement home residents who put on pig noses and cheer the runners, our estimated 150,000 “Squealers” are a vital part of the support, and the atmosphere, of the Marathon.
BROADCAST PARTNERS Since 2003 and again this year, the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon is joining WLWT-TV 5, the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati, for race day television coverage. Live coverage Sunday morning follows the Marathon from the start, to the winners’ podium. The iHeart Media family of stations in Cincinnati is the radio partner.
15 ECONOMIC IMPACT An economic impact study produced in 2012 by Xavier University showed that runners generate more than $12 million economic impact in Greater Cincinnati. That includes spending by out of town participants, local participants and their guests and families who come to town to cheer them on. The number includes more than $1.3 million spent for lodging and $1.2 million spent at restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and at the marathon Expo. Participants and their families also spent more than a quarter million dollars over the weekend at department stores and other retail outlets. In addition, the number of jobs created or sustained by the “Pig” is as many as 280 in the area.
THE ROUTE The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon course is generally unchanged. The Flying Pig Marathon starting line remains on Mehring Way, on the south side of Paul Brown Stadium, about half way between Elm and Central. Because of the increased number of participants, the wider areas of the streets ease crowding in the first few yards of the event. There are corrals along the starting line, with the elite runners closest to the starting line. The corrals will be released in increments as judged by race course officials to prevent congestion. This is to make each ‘start’ special for that group of participants.
Bridge Crossing This year runners will cross the Taylor-Southgate Bridge into Newport, Kentucky, first. The route will follow Fifth Street to the Licking River Bridge, then will follow Fourth Street west to the Clay Wade Bailey bridge for the return to downtown Cincinnati.
Downtown Tour After the Clay Wade Bailey crossing, the route then will go west on Third Street, and will travel north along the west side of downtown Cincinnati, again following Seventh Street in downtown Cincinnati to Gilbert Avenue, and the familiar route to Eden Park.
Big Finish This year the finish line, or “Swine Line,” again will be on the north side of US Bank Arena, along Pete Rose Way. Runners and walkers will still be able to enjoy their victory party area along the shaded, grassy area of Yeatman’s Cove, but will walk through the tunnel that connects Pete Rose Way and the riverfront to get there, again as a health and safety issue to allow runners a ‘cool down’ period. All the usual amenities, such as snacks, towels and the highly-coveted Flying Pig Marathon medals, still will be available at the “Swine Line!”

Locals Take Home Top Spots at 17th annual Flying Pig Marathon Largest Field Ever for Flying Pig Weekend
Cincinnati (May 3, 2015) – It’s been more than a decade since two local runners took home the top prizes at the Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G, but on Sunday under clear skies and 45 degrees at the start, history repeated itself as two runners from the Cincinnati area were the winners of the 17th annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G.
In the men’s division, 26-year-old Adam Gloyeske from Hamilton, a graduate of Northern Kentucky University, won the marathon in 2:32:55. For the women, 35-year-old Amy Robillard of Montgomery defended her marathon title in a time of 2:53:10. Robillard is now four-for-four in Flying Pig events, winning the IGS Half Marathon in 2011 and 2012 and the marathon back to back.
“Last year I just wanted to finish,” said Robillard, who was coming off an injury to run in 2014. “This year I was trying to see if I could run faster than last year, and just enjoy it.” In fact, Robillard’s 2015 finishing time was more than 2:30 faster than her winning time last year of 2:55:53.
Second in the women’s division was Kerry Lee, 40, of Cincinnati, third in last year’s marathon and second in 2013, in a time of 2:59:28. Third place went to 2005 Flying Pig winner, 32-year- old Alison Bedingfield Delgado, in 2:59:55. Fourth was yet another former Flying Pig marathon winner, P.J. Ball, 36, in 3:04:51.
As for Gloyeske, he had run the Pig four times but this is his first victory, taking the lead on Mile 19 over early leader Matt Carey, who finished tenth.
“I didn’t realize how much Matt had slowed down until I saw him at about Mile 18,” Gloyeske said. “It feels great to win the Pig. It’s the kind of course that anyone can run.”
Second for the men was 35-year-old David Bea of Cincinnati, and third was Eric Hunziker, 45, of Cincinnati. Fourth was former Flying Pig Marathon winner, T.J. Lentz, who won in 2004.
In fact, that was the last year that two local runners, Lentz and Ball, took the top spot in the marathon, until this year.
In the IGS Energy Half Marathon, 20-year-old Juliana Madzia of St. Clairsville, Ohio, defended her title, winning this year in a time of 1:21:22. Last year she won in 1:25:59. Second is 27-year- old Allie Kieffer of New York in 1:22:26 and third is 26-year-old Katie Lenahan, the winner of the 2014 Queen Bee Half, in 1:23:36.
20 On the men’s side, the winner was 22-year-old Robert Scharold from Lexington, Kentucky, in 1:14:06. Second is Tilahun Abebe, 36, of Cincinnati in 1:14:15 and third is Josh Bokelman, 38, of Cincinnati, in 1:15:07.
In Saturday’s top events, 29-year-old Greg Lemmon of Cincinnati won the Toyota 10K and 36- year-old Emily Boles of Greensboro, N.C. won in the women’s division. In the Tri State Running Co. 5K, Matt Motsinger, 35, of Cincinnati won on the men’s side and Melanie Pliskin, 30, of Cincinnati won the women’s division. Pliskin also won Friday night’s Little Kings Mile, and Jake Edwards won the Mile for the men.
The total field for the weekend totaled 37,770, a more than 1,500 increase in last year’s registration, also a record. Participants this year represent all 50 states and 22 countries. “What do you get when you put together 36,000 safety pins, 7,500 medals, 7,500 bananas, 40 churches, 2,000 Band-Aids, 400 six-foot tables, 181 portable toilets, almost 10,000 people and 26.2 miles of paved surface in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky?
“You have the ingredients of the inaugural Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, to be run Sunday.
“Those items are just a tiny part of an incredible list of necessities - not including the thousands of man-hours of planning, negotiating, recruiting and missed sleep.” Cincinnati Post, May 6, 1999
From a dream to reality, the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon got off to a flying start on Mother’s Day, 1999. Some 6,150 runners started downtown, wound through the neighborhoods and finished at the Museum Center, Union Terminal. In its first running, the “Pig” got rave reviews in Marathon & Beyond. The Pig scored 901 on a scale of 1,000 — the sixth-best of any marathon reviewed.
The inaugural Flying Pig was the second-largest first marathon in history, after San Diego's in 1998, and immediately among the top 10 in the country.
Elly Rono, a 29-year-old Kenyan living in Evansville, Ind., ran away with the men's race, finishing in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 15 seconds. Rono broke away at the 4-mile mark and was unchallenged the rest of the way.
Sommer Settall, a 22-year-old student at the University of Cincinnati, won the women's race in 2:58:10. It was the first win in a major race for Settall, who has been running seriously for only 1 2 /2 years.
Rono and Settall each received $1,500 for their victories.

Fifth Street from Sycamore to Broadway was lined with more than 6,100 runners for the second edition of the Flying Pig Marathon, nearly 40 percent of whom were running in their first Marathon.
Rudolf Jun, a 28-year old native of the Czech Republic who trained in Ft. Walton Beach, Fl., led the entire race, as did the women’s winner, Princeton High School graduate and Sharonville, Ohio native Rebecca Vonderhaar Gallaher. Gallaher set a new women’s course record of 2:49:32 in the process.
The 2000 course changed, with the finish line moved to Sawyer Point to accommodate the crowds and the Victory Party.
77 Then-current Marathon world record holder Khalid Khannouchi was in town for the Marathon, but did not compete. He did, however, have these observations about the “Pig:” ''The people here, the community, the volunteers and the race organizers really did a great job to have a great marathon. I think they could have a bigger and bigger marathon in the future.''

The Flying Pig Marathon moved from its traditional Mother’s Day date for the first time in 2001, and the change seemed to suit runners, as registration started at a record pace. Nearly 1,000 runners had registered as of January 8, three times the amount during the same time the year before. Almost 70 percent of those registrations were online. Relay registration for the Marathon started January 8, and within the first 24 hours, the 100 online registration openings for the open relay were filled.
The course itself was changed again, with the start moving from Fifth to Seventh Street downtown. The eastern section of the course, along Red Bank Road, Wooster Pike, Wilmer and Kellogg avenues, was trimmed back. Instead, runners moved onto Delta Avenue and through Mt. Lookout Square. The mileage was made up with a western route along Central Parkway and Spring Grove Avenue.
On race day, the results looked a lot like the year before, as the defending champions, Rudolf Jun and Rebecca Gallaher, returned to win their second straight “Pig.” Male and female winners received $2,000 each.

A cooling fog greeted nearly 7,300 runners for the fourth annual Flying Pig Marathon, which may have helped women’s winner Tatyana Pozdnyakova, a Russian training in Florida, shatter the women’s course record by 15 minutes, earning a $10,000 bonus.
Even the men’s winner, Cornelio Velasco, had his own unique story to tell. Velasco ran a half marathon in Indianapolis the day before, then came to Cincinnati and won his first Marathon.
Runners from 49 states and nine countries participated in the Flying Pig Marathon, an event that started along Seventh Street and ended at Yeatman's Cove after winding its way through Cincinnati streets.

For the first time since the Flying Pig Marathon started, all 50 states were represented at the same time. A record 9,762 participants signed up for the weekend's Flying Pig Marathon activities, a nine percent increase from the previous year. In the open marathon, 4,610 runners participated, with 2,052 in the Ernst & Young 4-person relay, 924 in the Outback Steakhouse 2- person relay and 1,650 in the new Papa John's 10K.
Another first in 2003 was the two winners, John Aerni and Lisa Veneziano, were both from the Cincinnati area. John became the first Cincinnati-area male to win the open division of the Marathon, while Lisa’s victory came in her first Pig.

For the second year in a row, the men’s and women’s winners of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon were residents of the Queen City. Thirty-seven year-old Thomas Lentz of Clifton braved the rainy, windy conditions and a late attack of leg cramps to pull away from the field and win the men’s division in 2:38:07. In the women’s division, 25-year old P.J. Ball, also of Clifton, won in convincing form, with a time of 3:05:52, nearly two minutes ahead of her nearest competitor.
The 2004 edition of the Flying Pig Marathon saw the largest weekend field ever registered for the two days of events, 12,124, a more than 20 percent jump in registrations over the year before. It also was the first year that the Flying Pig Marathon charities raised more than $1 million through the Marathon for their causes. This was the first year that the Marathon topped the million dollar mark in charitable contributions.

The last time Tim Rieger ran the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, in 2002, he admitted he ‘bonked’ at mile 22. This time, he made sure he was strong throughout the finish.
The 28-year old Rieger, of Dayton, Ohio, battled Isaac Barnes throughout most of the 26.2 miles before Rieger took the lead in the last mile and a half to win the seventh annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon with a time of 2:30:24.
The former University of Cincinnati runner had run only two marathons, both of which were the Flying Pig. In the 2002 race, he finished fourth when he ran out of energy toward the end. “My goal this year was the top five,” Rieger said. “I never thought I had it won until the end.”
In the women’s division, 22-year-old Alison Bedingfield of Groesbeck, a Cincinnati suburb, broke away from the pack to claim her first marathon win in her first ever marathon, finishing in 3:03:40.
The 2005 race also saw the first Flying Pig Half Marathon presented by National City. The men’s division was won by 34-year old Jason Newport of Eaton, Ohio in a time of 1:15:38, and the women’s winner was 34-year old Tanya Thatcher of Mason, Ohio, in 1:23:04. A record 13,282 registrations were received for Marathon weekend activities.

Cecil Franke of Dublin, Indiana, won the Eighth Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon on Sunday in an event record time of 2:20:25 in only his second marathon. Franke, a cross country coach at Centerville High School, just outside Richmond, Indiana, shattered the previous marathon record of 2:21:15, set in 1999 by Elly Rono, as he dueled most of the way with second place finisher Chris Reis.
79 A record 15,756 were registered for the weekend events, including 4,919 in the full marathon, 4,937 in the half marathon presented by National City, 200 in the Corporate Express corporate relay and 1,892 in the Ernst & Young open relay. In the Saturday events, 973 competed in the Toyota 10K, won by T.J. Lentz and Kerry Lee, 1,405 in the 5K and 585 in the Piglet Fun Run. Forty-eight states and fifteen countries, including the United States, were represented in the field.
In the women’s division, 36-year old Norah Shire of Hyde Park easily won in a time of 2:56:19. “It’s a fantastic marathon, a great course,” said the Washington, D.C., native, who is now living in Cincinnati, finishing her Ph.D. in viral epidemiology at the University of Cincinnati. When you go through the neighborhoods, it’s so much fun. It’s such a popular race—I mean, it’s called the Flying Pig.”
Shire, who had run the Heart Mini-Marathon and marathons in Columbus and Boston, had only run the two-person relay in the “Pig” before winning the full marathon. “I had an injured male teammate (from the Earth Drummers running club) pace me through mile 15. After that, I was pretty much by myself.”
Second in the women’s division was 22-year-old Lindsey Yourman of New York, in a time of 2:59:32 in her first marathon. “I went out with the 3:30 group, and I couldn’t believe how fast I was going,” she said.
Third was 33-year old Betsy Armentrout of Winston Salem, North Carolina, who finished in 3:01:40. This is the third “Pig” for the pediatrician, with fifth being her best previous finish. “It was exciting, I had a great day,” said Armentrout, who lived in Cincinnati for four years, while she did her residency at Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
In the Flying Pig Half Marathon presented by National City, 26-year old Tilahun Abebe of Western Hills, a naïve of Ethiopia, won the men’s division in a time of 1:14:07 after getting off work at midnight and getting little or no sleep before the race. He worked the second shift at the parking garage at Tower Place, one of two jobs he holds, then was at the starting line at 6 a.m.
Tanya Thatcher, 35, from Mason, Ohio, defended her title as the women’s division half marathon winner, finishing in 1:23:18. ‘There was a little more pressure because of winning the year before,” she said. “I led through four miles, then I hung back until mile nine, then I took the lead again. The downhill stretched pushed me home.”

The sixth time was the charm for the 2007 winner of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon’s ninth annual running. Isaac Barnes of Williamsport, Ohio, a six-time entrant in the Flying Pig Marathon, beat a record field to take the 2007 Marathon title in a time of 2:33:36.
The 31-year old Barnes finished second in the Flying Pig Marathon three times, in 2005, 2002 and 2000. He was sixth last year and third in 2001.
80 “At mile 21 all I could think of was ‘Brother, don’t blow this now,’” said Barnes. “At mile 24 it just felt great to know that I finally could get a victory here.”
Second in the men’s division with a time of 2:34:53 was Kevin Alessandro, 27, a Northern Kentucky native now living in Louisville. Alessandro had the lead for much of the beginning of the marathon, until mile 16. “My right hamstring started tightening up at 16, and at mile 17, Isaac just took off.”
Third was 39-year old Jim Beyer from Dayton, OH, in 2:35:22, running his first Flying Pig and just his second marathon.
For Barnes, who has run 25 marathons and has one previous win, in Pennsylvania, the victory at the Pig was a sweet reward. “It just feels great. I’ve run marathons before when I started strong and ran out of gas at the end. But today I was running with Kevin at a pace I was comfortable with.”
In the women’s division, Leah Peelman, 23, of Kennedy Heights, the defending champion of this spring’s Heart Mini-Marathon, won the Flying Pig Marathon at her first try in 2:55:53. “I had wanted to run the Flying Pig before but was always busy with school,” said Peelman, a graduate of Hanover College who will go to graduate school in the fall.
Second was 36-year old Tanya Thatcher of Mason, a two-time winner of the Flying Pig Half Marathon presented by National City, in 3:03:40. Thatcher had the lead for most of the race until mile 21, when Peelman overtook her. “I really felt good,” said Thatcher, “and I don’t think I would have gone out any differently. Something happened between 19 and 20 when I got really disoriented and dizzy. I don’t remember anything from about mile 20 in.”
Even though she took ill, Thatcher still turned in a personal best time. “I knew she (Peelman) was back there the whole time. She ran a very smart race,” said Thatcher. “That’s the thing about the marathon, it’s very humbling. I’ve run 13 full marathons before this, and I’ve never had something like that that happen before.”
“It’s a little mentally defeating to come from behind,” said Peelman, who trailed Thatcher early in the race by as much as 40 seconds. “I just tried to close the gap a little at a time. It took about five miles to do it.”
Third was Leslie Kramer, 29, of Slippery Rock, PA, in 3:05:06, her second straight personal best at the Flying Pig, and her 10th marathon. “My daughter loves Cincinnati, so we’ve made a vacation of it the last two years,” said Kramer.
In the Half Marathon presented by National City, Flying Pig veteran T.J. Lentz, 40, led the men’s field in a time of 1:10:02. This is Lentz’s third Flying Pig title, as he won the 2004 Flying Pig Marathon and the Toyota 10K last year. “This is the first time I’ve run the half,” said Lentz. “I hadn’t trained for a longer race, but I always want to take part in Marathon weekend because it’s just a great hometown event.”
Second in the men’s half division was 28-year old Mike Griewe of Cincinnati, who ran for, and graduated from, the University of Notre Dame in 2000. He and Lentz had a battle for the lead
81 until mile 10. “He (Griewe) pushed me from the beginning,” said Lentz. “We were shoulder to shoulder until we started down Gilbert. I like to run downhill, so I tried to get a gap between us there.” Griewe finished the course in 1:10:36. Third was last year’s event winner, 27-year old Tilahun Abebe from Independence, KY, in a time of 1:13:40.
In the women’s half marathon division, 38-year old Larisa Mikhailova of Moscow, Russia, broke away from the pack at mile three and was never challenged, winning in a time of 1:23:15. Her running manager is Tatyana Pozdnyakova, who won the Flying Pig Marathon in 2002 in a still- record time for women of 2:34:35.
Second among women was Rachel Stoehr, 25, of Erlanger, in 1:24:36, who was taking part in her first half marathon. “I love the atmosphere,” said Stoehr. “You can’t be a runner in Cincinnati and not run the Flying Pig.” Third was 19-year old Katie Lewnard, a freshman at the University of Cincinnati and a graduate of Mother of Mercy High School, where she ran track and cross country. She finished the course in 1:26:45.
Winning the wheelchair division was Mike Savicki of Cornelius, North Carolina, in 3:14:55, his 52nd marathon and 13th marathon victory.
A record number of registrations highlighted the Ninth Annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, with a total of 18,192 entrants for the weekend events. Included in the total are 4,735 in the full marathon, 6,324 in the Half Marathon presented by National City, and 2,552 in the Ernst & Young 4-person relay.

RECORD CROWD MARKS 10TH FLYING PIG MARATHON
CINCINNATI (May 4, 2008) –The largest field in Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon history saw 33- year-old Andy Martin of Bend, Oregon, take the men’s overall marathon title at the 10th anniversary running of the Marathon on Sunday, May 4th.
A record weekend field of 22,149, including 16,406 participants in the Sunday events, highlighted the celebration of the 10th Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon weekend, May 2-4. That is up from the 2007 numbers of 18,192, a then-record total.
Second in the men’s field was 24-year old Brian List, of Milford, Ohio, who finished in a time of 2:33:33. List is the reigning champion of Cincinnati’s Heart Mini-Marathon. Third was 26-year- old Travis Murray of Owensville, Ohio, finishing with a time of 2:34:34 in his first-ever marathon.
For Martin, who won in a time of 2:30:40, the Flying Pig Marathon was his fifth marathon victory, his most recent coming last weekend at Big Sur International in California. Why did he come to the “Pig?” “It’s a famous marathon,” he said. “I wanted to see what it was about.”
Martin had a competitive battle with List through the first half of the marathon. “I was getting him on the hills, and he would get me coming down,” said Martin. “I was able to break away finally in about the 14th mile.”

Winning the women’s division was 39-year-old Michelle Didion of LaPorte, Indiana, in a time of 3:05:18. The mother of four from ages 14 to 7 had run the Flying Pig Half Marathon presented by National City and the Toyota 10K in past years before taking on the Marathon this year.
“I loved it,” she said. “I felt like a rock star all the way through. Not every race gives the women their own pace car and their own escorts. It was a wonderful race.”
Second in the women’s division was 31-year-old Julie Spencer of Baraboo, Wisconsin, in 3:06:32. The decision to do the “Pig” was a last-minute one for this veteran of more than a dozen marathons. “A friend of mine and I just decided to do it a couple of weeks ago,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to do the ‘Pig.”
Third was 26-year-old Jen Gapin of Greensboro, North Carolina, who turned in her personal best time of 3:07:43 in her fifth marathon. “A friend of mind recommended this event,” she said. “It was fun, great crowd support and was well organized.”

RECORD WEEKEND FOR FLYING PIG MARATHON POWERED BY P&G Reyes, Ray Take Marathon Titles
CINCINNATI (May 3, 2009) –A record Sunday field of more than 16,000 saw Flying Pig newcomers Sergio Reyes and Autumn Ray take the men’s and women’s marathon titles on a fast track in the 11th annual running of the Flying Pig Marathon Powered by P&G.
Reyes, 27, of Palmdale, California, won the race in a near record time of 2:20:37, just 12 seconds off the event record of 2:20:25 set in 2006 by Cecil Franke.
“This is one of the most scenic races I’ve ever done,” said Reyes, who runs for the Asics- sponsored Aggies running club. “The views were truly awesome and the weather was just about perfect.”
Second in the men’s division was Tim Parr, 27, of Gunnison, Colorado, in a time of 2:28:32 and third was 29-year-old Adam Thomas of West Chester, Ohio, in 2:31:25.
“The course was fantastic,” said Parr, who came in sixth in last year’s Flying Pig Marathon. Parr ran most of the course with college teammate Travis Murray, who finished fifth and with whom Parr trained at Western State College of Colorado. “Travis and I stayed together until mile 17, and after that I wanted to pick up the pace.”
Thomas was trailing the lead pack until he passed eventual fourth place finisher Grant Scott with about two miles to go, to claim third place. “Weather was perfect,” said Thomas. “No wind, the rain stopped and it was nice and cool.”
It was Thomas’s third overall marathon and first “Pig,” after leaving home to attend college at the University of Iowa. “I moved back home this year and I wanted to run here to thank
83 everyone who has supported me in my running career since junior high—my parents, sister, girlfriend, this was my chance to give back.”
On the women’s side, Autumn Ray, 29, from Galveston, Texas, claimed first place in her first “Pig” in 2:52:23. “I felt good going into this event, I felt very comfortable,” she said. “It was one of those runs where the energy was flowing.”
It was the fourth career marathon win for Ray, who squeezed the “Pig” in, during a rare weekend break from medical school at the University of Texas-Galveston. “I finished pediatrics on Friday and I start surgery on Monday. I had a weekend off, so I looked for a marathon that would be held this weekend, and I found the Flying Pig. It looked like fun, so I signed up.”
Second in the women’s division was a familiar face in Cincinnati-area running, Tanya Thatcher, 38, of Mason, Ohio, in a time of 2:59:31. She won the PNC Half Marathon in 2006 and finished the Columbus marathon last year in a time of 2:56:33.
“This was a run that was mind over matter,” said Thatcher. “I’m coming off Achilles tendonosis in February, and I have bursitis in my right hip, then last year I tore an Achilles tendon. My finish in Columbus gave me the confidence to come back to the “Pig” because this is home.”
Third in the women’s division was 33-year-old Mindy Leisure of Kettering, Ohio, coming in at 2:59:42 in her first ever marathon. “It was a challenging course, but I really liked it,” she said. “The crowd was great.” Mindy ran the PNC Half Marathon here last year and is a two-time winner of the Air Force Half Marathon.
In the PNC Half Marathon, veteran Cincinnati runner Chris Reis and Dayton native Nicole LaSelle claimed the titles in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively.
The 27-year-old Reis, the winner of the 2009 Heart Mini Marathon, placed second in the full Marathon in 2006. He finished in a time of 1:09:09. Second among men is former Marathon and PNC Half Marathon winner, T.J. Lentz, 42, with a time of 1:11:17. Third is 23-year-old Keegan Rathkamp in a time of 1:12:07.
“I train on these roads all the time,” said Reis, who works for Bob Roncker’s Running Spot in Cincinnati. “During Marathon week we’re so busy at the store and at the Expo, it’s hard to prepare properly, but it went well. I liked the downhill at the end.”
For Nicole LaSelle, 31, of Kent, Ohio, it was her second time in the PNC Half Marathon, having run the event three years ago. “It was amazing out there,” said LaSelle, who is finishing up her PhD in counseling. “The spectators are unbelievable.” LaSelle won in a time of 1:21:52.
Second in the women’s division was the only two-time female winner of the Flying Pig Marathon, Rebecca Gallaher, who returned to the Pig for the first time since her back-to-back wins in 2000 and 2001. “I have four kids now, so that limits my training time,” said Gallaher, who finished in 1:22:45. “But there was great support on the course.”
Third in the women’s division was 22-year-old Leslie Kraus with a time of 1:25:22.
84 A record Sunday field of 16,762 started at 6:30 a.m. under cloudy skies and a slight drizzle, and a temperature of 54 degrees. Sunday’s field included a full marathon total of 4,891 participants, 9,203 for the PNC Half and 2,668 in the City Dash 4-person relay and Corporate Challenge relay sponsored by the Business Courier and McGowan Brabender.
Sunday’s Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G caps a weekend that saw a record 22,285 register for events, including 1,572 for the Toyota 10K, 1,926, an event record, for the Fleet Feet Sports 5K, 489 for the Piglet Fun Run and 1,536 for the Kids Marathon presented by Ernst & Young.
Saturday winners included, in the Toyota 10K, 23-year-old Nazar Trilisky of Cincinnati in the men’s division in a time of 33:30 and 25-year-old Karen Berling of Cincinnati in 39:11. In the Fleet Feet Sports 5K, 35-year-old Jeff Hojnacki of Chicago won the men’s division in 16:22 and Kerry Bogner, 26, of Cincinnati, won the women’s division in 18:58.

Record Crowds Celebrate 12th Annual Flying Pig Marathon
Cincinnati (May 2, 2010) A familiar face in the Cincinnati running community won the 12th Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G as a record field of 26,000 braved cloudy skies and intermittent rain to take part in the two days of events.
Winning the Flying Pig Marathon was 26-year-old Brian List of Miamiville, Ohio, who won the Pig in a time of 2:31:56 for his first-ever marathon win. List was the runner-up in the 2008 Marathon and was the winner of the 2009 Cincinnati Heart Mini-Marathon.
Second in the men’s division was 30-year-old Tilahun Abebe, in 2:34:41. Abebe was the winner of the 2006 Flying Pig Half Marathon. Third was Rob Morwood, 35, of Lebanon, Ohio, in 2:36:07. The top three runners all train as members of the local Earth Drummers running club.
List had been running among the leaders for most of the marathon before overtaking Abebe at about mile 22. “I’ve been aiming for a 2:30 time the last three years,” said List. “This year, I said, even though I fall off the 2:30 pace, I’ll just try to run a little faster than I had before. I’ve always been a good runner from behind.”
In the women’s division, 26-year-old Cynthia Arnold of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, won in 2:55:02. While this is her first traditional marathon win in her first Pig, she is the reigning USATF Trail Marathon National Champion. Back in the area visiting family in Lexington, Kentucky, Cynthia decided to run after getting a cortisone shot and a larger sized shoe for a foot injury.
“I didn’t know how fast I could run today (because of the injury), but I was in the front pretty much. When the half broke off, I was by myself and the crowd kept telling me how I was doing. In fact, that’s my favorite part of these races, the crowd support. In trail races, nobody knows where you are.”
85 Arnold’s husband, Louis Brenner, also ran in today’s Half Marathon, finishing his event in 1:40:49.
Second in the women’s division was Marnie Staehly, 32, from Houston, Texas, in her first Pig, and third with a time of 3:02:30 was 28-year-old Rachel Bea of Cincinnati, who, as Rachel Stoehr, was the winner of the 2008 Flying Pig Half Marathon. Bea, a running coach at Simon Kenton High School, actually was involved in her second event of Pig weekend. She coaches a Ryland Runners team that participated in the Ernst & Young Kids One Mile event on Saturday.
In the Flying Pig Half Marathon, two Cincinnati-area residents were the winners in the male and female divisions. Sycamore High graduate Ben Foley, a sophomore at Xavier University, won the event in 1:12:35, while 23-year-old Leslie Kraus, a University of Cincinnati graduate, won the women’s division in 1:24:23.
“In the beginning I thought I might have been silly going out in front,” said Foley, who was running in his second Flying Pig Half Marathon and had to battle anemia the last few months before having the strength to train. “I wondered when the other competitors were going to catch up, because I rarely run this distance. But I felt like after the 10K mark I was in good enough shape and I kept telling myself to keep holding my lead.”
Second in the men’s division was 31-year-old Jason Gantt of Loveland, OH, in a time of 1:13.25, and third was former Flying Pig Marathon and Half Marathon winner T.J. Lentz, 43, in 1:14:25.
In the women’s division, Kraus was able to get a lead early to hold on to her first victory in the Half Marathon, although she was the women’ winner in the Fleet Feet Sport 5K in 2008 and came in third in last year’ half. It was only her second event since coming back from a stress fracture in her left shin over the winter.
“I wanted to be top 10 because I haven’t been running for very long and I’m just so happy that I’m running without pain,” said Kraus, who’s been back training for about six weeks. “I started up front and there were a couple of girls with me, so I just tried to stay with them.
Second was 28-year-old Carrie Birth of Maineville, OH, the reigning winner of the Heart Mini- Marathon, who finished in a time of 1:25:13, and third was Pig veteran Tara Keller, 35, of Bexley, OH, who was competing in her 10th Flying Pig Marathon weekend. She finished in a time of 1:26:28.
In the City Dash 4-Person Relay, the Wofford Terriers team won in a time of 2:51:08. Second was Sacred Heart of Fairfield, Ohio, in 2:55:59 and third was Led Feet in 3:09:28. In the women’s relay division, Count Pour Lick Stick won in 3:19:25. Second was Boca Beauties in 3:34:03 and third was Davidson CC Moms in 3:51:00.
The Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G featured 18,520 in the Sunday events, including 4,879 registered for the full marathon, 10,861 in the Half Marathon and 2,780 in the 4-person relay division. In the Saturday events, 1,996 were registered for the Toyota 10K, 2,535 in the Fleet Feet Sports 5K, 2,269 for the Ernst & Young Kids One Mile and 624 in the Flying Piglet Fun Run.
86 In the Saturday events, A tight finish in the Fleet Feet Sports 5K and an incredible gesture of sportsmanship in the Toyota 10K highlighted the opening events of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G.
Rainy skies greeted the 1,588 participants for the opening event of the weekend, the Toyota 10K. Fernando Ceccopieri, 52, of Loveland, won the event in 37:19. Second was 39-year-old Mark Harrell of Raleigh, N.C. in a time of 37:44 and 34-year-old Robert Horn of Red Bank, New Jersey was third in 38:45.
“I was able to break away about mile four,” said Ceccopieri, who was running his first Pig event. “It felt good to be out there in the rain.”
On the women’s side, 29-year-old Shari Klarfeld of Plainview, New York, won in a time of 44:00 after collapsing three times before crossing the finish line. As she collapsed the third time, just short of the timing mat, 23-year-old Amy Schoenfeld of Westwood stopped and helped Klarfeld cross first, even though Schoenfeld could have won the event easily. Schoenfeld’s official time was 44:01.
“She deserved to win,” said Schoenfeld. “She was leading the entire race. She just ran into trouble there right at the end.”
“I didn’t properly train for the 10K,” admitted Klarfeld, who received medical treatment at the finish line and was able to leave under her own power in about a half hour. “When I got past mile six, I knew I was in trouble.”
Third was 32-year-old Stephanie Moses of New York, finishing at 46:10.
In the Fleet Feet Sports 5K, the men’s finish came down to a dash down the final stretch as 22- year-old George Moran of Maineville edged Michael Dehring, the winner of the 2008 Toyota 10K. Moran won in 16:40 in his first Flying Pig event while Dehring, of Sycamore Township, came in at 16:42. Third was 16-year-old Antony Parnigone of Newtown.
“I thought I could catch him in that last tenth of a mile, said Dehring, 39. “George ran a great race.”
In the women’s division, 27-year-old Meghan Ward of Cincinnati was the winner in a time of 20:10 while a pair of 14-year-olds finished just behind. Hannah Helmers of Cincinnati had a time of 20:38 while fellow teenager Skyler Green of Dixie Heights, KY finished in 21:02.
A total of 1,900 entries started the Fleet Feet Sports 5K in a light drizzle.

Flying Pig Marathon Boasts Record Field for 13th Running Two First-Time Pig Participants Win Marathon
CINCINNATI (May 1, 2011) – A record weekend registration of more than 30,000 runners and walkers highlighted the 13th running of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G.
The two-day total of 30,408 participants included 5,083 for the full marathon, 12,155 for the half marathon and 3,044 for the relays, all running on Sunday.
The winner of the men’s division of the Marathon was 24-year-old Kieran O’Connor from New York, New York in a personal best time of 2:28:02. O’Connor, a 2009 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, won the Pig in only his second marathon ever. His first was the New York Marathon, where he was the 13th American to finish and first in his age division. O’Connor, who is now in graduate studies at New York University, took the lead early and never was challenged.
Second was 29-year-old David Riddle of Cincinnati in 2:31:15 and third was Rob Morwood, 36, of Otterbein, Ohio, at 2:35:54.
“One of the most important pieces of advice I’ve ever received in running a marathon is to be as calm as possible for as long as possible,” said O’Connor, who ran the Pig with two classmates from Notre Dame who first got O’Connor into running while they all were in college.
In the women’s division, the winner was 34-year-old Amy McDonaugh of Irmo, South Carolina, in 2:58:14. Second was Kerry Lee, 36, of Cincinnati in 3:02:01 and third was 25-year-old Carrie Kutzli of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 3:03:44.
McDonaugh, who is legally blind, broke away from the women’s leaders at mile 10 and held onto the lead to the finish. She is a member of the Columbia (S.C.) Running Club, whose coach and another member traveled to Cincinnati for Pig weekend. This was McDonaugh’s fourth marathon and her first under three hours.
“My mom encouraged me to begin running when I was little,” said McDonaugh. “Because of my eyesight I could never play sports, but I could do this.”
In the Flying Pig Half Marathon, the men’s winner was 18-year-old Ryan James of Belfast Maine, running his first half marathon with more than a dozen teammates from Berry College in Georgia. He finished in a time of 1:13:26. Second was the 2004 winner of the Flying Pig Marathon, T.J. Lentz, 44, of Clifton in a time of 1:13:48 and third was Enrick Garcia, 23, of Cincinnati in 1:16:16.
“Our school is transitioning from NAIA to Division III,” said James. We can’t compete in any NAIA championships, so our coach takes the team to marathons and half marathons as our own championship. There are 17 of us from Berry on this trip.”
88 Winning the women’s division of the Half Marathon was 31-year-old Amy Robillard from Mason, Ohio, in a time of 1:22:11. This was her second race in this area—the first was the Heart Mini-Marathon in March. Amy splits her time between training and taking care of her four-year old daughter and soon-to-be 14-month old son, Jameson, who had a bone marrow transplant a year ago.
“I run when I can—if I have time at home, I’ll run for 45 minutes, or if I’m at the hospital with Jameson the nurses tell me where I can run for a few minutes, said Robillard. “The course itself was challenging, but there was great crowd support and you definitely get an adrenaline rush when they cheer you on.”
Second was 29-year-old Rachel Bea from Kenwood, who’s now run the half three times and the full twice, in 1:22:48. Third was Erica Schramm, 33, from Las Vegas, Nevada, who ran her first Pig in 1:25:56.
The Flying Pig Marathon Weekend powered by P&G kicked off Saturday morning with record registration for the Toyota 10K and Tri State Running Company 5K, and some familiar faces returning to this year’s competition.
The 2011 Flying Pig weekend began with 2,442 registered for the Toyota 10K. The winner, Derrick Butler from Cincinnati, finished in a time of 32:46. Second place was Donnie Warner in 32:52 and third was Chad Lutz in a time of 34:53.
In the women’s division, the winner was Heather Backer from Crestview Hills, Kentucky in 39:18. Second was Christine Tieman and third was Amy Carwile.
In the Tri State Running Company 5K, which had a field of 3,616, last year’s 2010 Marathon winner, Brian List, won the 5K in a time of 16:04. In the women’s division, the winner was Becky Clark of Sayler Park in 18:23. The 2005 winner of the Flying Pig Marathon, Alison Delgado, came in third place in the Flying Pig 5K.
Alison, who won the Pig as Alison Bedingfield, entered the 5K after six months of rehabilitation after she was hit by a car while cycling. The story of her recovery, with the help of her husband, Tim, has become nationally-known, with features on NBC’s “Today” show and other national outlets. Alison and Tim were the honorary starters for Sunday’s Flying Pig Marathon.
Other events on this opening day of Flying Pig weekend include the Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon 26th mile, the Flying Piglet and Pampers Diaper Dash.

Familiar Faces Take Flying Pig Titles Flying Pig Marathon sees record field
CINCINNATI (May 6, 2012) – Sergio Reyes, the winner of the 2009 Flying Pig Marathon, returned to Cincinnati this weekend to win his second Flying Pig Marathon in a time of 2:22:06. The 2012 field of participants was the largest-ever at 30,993 for events on Saturday and today.
The 30-year-old Reyes, of Palmdale, California, recently ran the Boston Marathon, where he finished 12th overall. His other wins this year are at the Rock ‘n Roll Pasadena Half Marathon and Across the Bay 12K, and he finished 25th at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Houston in January.
“It was great to come back and have fun on a beautiful day,” said Reyes. “It was a good event to run before I take a break from running.” Reyes is planning to take a few weeks off this spring and summer to heal some nagging injuries.
Reyes’ winning time in 2009 was 2:20:37, missing the event record held by Cecil Franke by 12 seconds. “I felt pretty good today,” said Reyes, who is a 2003 graduate of Cedarville University and is now in graduate school in electrical engineering at Cal State Northridge. “I had a surge at 18 but when I got to mile 23, the tank ran dry. I just decided to enjoy the last three miles.”
Second in the men’s marathon was 37-year-old Rob Morwood of Lebanon, Ohio, in a time of 2:37:30 and third was 44-year-old Jim Beyer of Dayton, Ohio in 2:38:15.
This is the fifth Flying Pig Marathon in which Morwood has completed. He finished third in the 2010 and 2011 Marathons.
“I was fighting my hamstring from mile 6 on,” said Morwood, who is an attorney at Baker & Hostetler in Cincinnati. “But this is our home town marathon. It’s fun to compete a bit in an event like this.”
For Beyer, it was his fourth Flying Pig. He finished third in 2007, but almost didn’t finish in 2012. “I told my wife (Julie) that I was stopping in Mariemont at mile 16. She was sitting in the car with a change of clothes and everything. But I was feeling so good, I just kept going.”
In the women’s Flying Pig Marathon, 30-year-old Rachel Bea of Cincinnati won the title in a time of 2:54:41. She finished second in last year’s half marathon. “I was there at the start with a whole group of girls. We went out with the mindset that it’s anybody’s race. We went back and forth for a while.”
Bea, whose parents in Wisconsin also are marathoners, is a graduate assistant cross country coach at Northern Kentucky University and teaches physical education at Ryland Elementary in northern Kentucky. “Those kids are always my inspiration,” she said. “A big group of our Ryland students took part in the Flying Pig Kids’ Marathon (on Saturday) and they inspire me to keep going.”
90 Second was 37-year-old Heather Backer of Crestview Hills, Kentucky, who not only finished the marathon in a time of 3:00:23, but also got a proposal from Dr. Bob Flick, a member of the Flying Pig’s medical team, at the finish line. “I love running the home course,” said Backer, who’s an elementary education teacher at Stephens Elementary in Northern Kentucky. She was the winner of the Toyota 10K at the Flying Pig last year.
Third was Kerry Lee, 37, of Cincinnati, in a time of 3:01:06. She was second in last year’s Flying Pig Marathon. “This is a great event,” said Lee. “The crowd support especially at the end made the difference.”
Fourth among women marathoners was 2005 Flying Pig Marathon winner Alison Bedingfield Delgado, 29, of Cincinnati in 3:01:37. Delgado’s story is well known in running circles, recovering from a near-fatal bicycle accident almost two years ago to run again.
In the Flying Pig Half Marathon presented by Border Energy, 28-year old Chris Herren of Oakley won in a time of 1:11:22. An employee of Tri-State Running Company, he also has won the 2011 Greenway Marathon, the 2011 Cedars Frostbit Half Marathon for the second consecutive year and finished seventh in the 2011 Rocket City Marathon. “This is probably my best distance,” Herren said. “I did it the hard way. That was a fast pace today.”
Second was a veteran in the Cincinnati running community, T.J. Lentz, finishing in 1:12:11. It’s his second straight year finishing second in the Flying Pig Half Marathon. “I’m 45 now, and if younger guys weren’t beating me, there’s something wrong,” Lentz said. “The crowds made a difference today. It reflects on the city so well.”
Third for the men was 19-year-old Dan Shafer of Fairborn, who just finished his sophomore year at Wright State University and completed his fourth half marathon at the Pig. “This is my first real big half marathon,” said Shafer, who finished in a time of 1:13:05.
On the women’s side, Amy Robillard, 32, of Mason, Ohio defended her 2011 Half Marathon title in a time of 1:21:20, besting her time last year by 51 seconds. Robillard’s story touched hearts last year, as she talked about working her training runs around her son’s chemotherapy treatments after a bone marrow transplant. Jameson is two now and is doing well.
“I always ran,” said Robillard, the mother of two. “Nowdays I do it because it’s therapeutic.”
Second in the women’s half marathon was 27-year-old Erin O’Mara of Ypsilianti, Michigan, in 1:24:50 in her first time running the Flying Pig Marathon. “I never saw Amy the whole time on the course,” O’Mara said, who was in Cincinnati working the P&G Health and Fitness Expo.
Third was 29-year-old Grace Conrad, a student at the University of Cincinnati, who claimed a personal best for the half at 1:25:21. “It was perfect out there,” said Conrad, who was in second place until the last couple of miles.
In Saturday’s events, Brett Frondorf won the Toyota 10K and Becky Clark won the women’s division. In the Flying Pig 5K, Chris Reis won the men’s division and Karen Berndt won in the women’s division.

Sergio Reyes First to Three-Peat at Flying Pig Marathon Record field celebrates Marathon’s 15th anniversary
Cincinnati (May 5, 2013) Sergio Reyes, the 2009 and 2012 winner of the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G, is the first to win the event three times with his victory Sunday in the 15th anniversary running of the Marathon.
The 31-year-old Reyes, of Palmdale, California, won the event in 2:21:51, 13 seconds better than his winning time of 2:22:04 last year. While Reyes is the first to three-peat, twice have Flying Pig winners won the event two times, on the men’s side by Rudolf Jun and the women’s side, Rebecca Gallaher, both in 2000 and 2001.
“It was great, great enthusiasm along the course, there were a lot of Boston supporters and that was just really encouraging. When the going got tough, those guys really gave me motivation,” said Reyes, who placed 12th at the Boston Marathon three weeks ago. “This is one of my favorite races-it’s almost a home town race for me.”
Second in the men’s division was 38-year-old Rob Morwood of Lebanon, who came in second to Reyes last year as well. He finished this year in 2:34:30. Third was 32-year-old Derrick Butler of Cincinnati in 2:35:29.
On the women’s side, 29-year-old Rebecca Walter of Bloomington, Indiana, an assistant track and cross country coach at Indiana University, won in 2:53:58, in the first non-trail marathon she had ever run. “The course here, I liked it, it was uphill then downhill, it’s the way I like to run,” said Walter, who was also making her first visit to Cincinnati.
92 Second was 38-year-old Kerry Lee of Cincinnati in 2:54:22, clipping more than six minutes from her third place finish time last year. Third with a time of 3:00:34 was another former Flying Pig winner, P.J. Ball, the 2004 women’s champion.
A record number of participants were part of the 15th anniversary of the Flying Pig with 33,852 signed up for weekend events, a 9.1% increase over 2012. All 50 states and 16 countries were represented in the field.
In the Border Energy Half Marathon, 27-year-old Justin Scheid from Sparta, New Jersey was the male winner, in a time of 1:10:56. The Georgetown University graduate was running with his brother, Jeremy, who finished fourth, in 1:16:34. Second was 30-year-old Matthew Behrensmeyer from Crescent Springs, KY in 1:13:03 and third was 25-year-old Andrew Archer from Cincinnati in 1:15:03.
In the women’s division of the Border Energy Half Marathon, 26-year-old Leslie Kraus of Cleves repeats as champion, having won the event in 2010. The Taylor High School and University of Cincinnati graduate has run the half marathon here four times and the Tri State Running Company 5K once, with two half marathon wins and a 5K title on her resume.
Second on the women’s side was 32-year-old Alicia Heyne of Louisville, Kentucky in a time of 1:27:41 and third was 37-year-old Hisako Fujiwara of Cincinnati in 1:27:45.
In earlier events, Paul Odipo, a Kenyan runner competing in his first U.S. marathon, warmed up for Sunday’s Flying Pig with a win at the Toyota 10K to open Saturday’s schedule at the Flying Pig Marathon weekend powered by P&G.
Odipo, 38, runs for Team SOTENI-Kilometers for Kenya. Second place in the men’s division was Tilahun Abebe, 34, in a time of 34:18 and third was Keith Harris, 30, in a time of 35:26.
Winning the female division was 24-year old Chelsea Koglmeier of Cincinnati, who was running her first Toyota 10K. A 2012 graduate of Duke University, Koglmeier won in a time of 39:50. Second in the female division was Olivia Connaughton, 13, in a time of 40:18 and third was Sue Dehaan in a time of 42:23.
In the Tri-State Running Company 5K, Flying Pig veteran Chris Reis, 31, of Ludlow, Kentucky, won the title in 16:31 to defend his 2012 5K championship. Rounding out the top three were Todd Larison, 47, of Clearwater, Florida (17:18) and Harvey Lewis, 30, of Dayton, Ohio (17:33).
On the women’s side of the Tri-State Running Company 5K, Kristine Durand, 35, of Batavia won with a time of 19:43 followed by Hayley Meyer, 13, Cincinnati (20:29) and Anna Foote, 23, Sycamore, Ohio (20:39).
For the Flying Pig events, the full marathon had 4,920 registrants; Border Energy Half Marathon, 12,129; 4-person relays, 2,360; Toyota 10K, 3,704; Tri State Running Company 5K, 5,441; Kids Marathon, 4,478; Pigability, 170 and Piglet Fun Run, 650.
Starting the Flying Pig Marathon weekend Friday night was the inaugural Little Kings One Miler, won by Spike Knickel in a time of 4:26. Second in the men’s division was Jason Bumb in 4:27 and
93 third was Javan Lapp in 4:28. In the women’s division, the winner was Becky Clark in 5:04, second was Olivia Connaughton in 5:24 and third was Halle Cupp in 6:06.

Sergio Reyes Wins Flying Pig Marathon for Fourth Time 16th annual event boasts biggest field ever
CINCINNATI (May 4, 2014) – Sergio Reyes successfully defended his back-to-back Flying Pig Marathon titles by winning the 2014 Flying Pig in a time of 2:27:21, his third straight victory in Cincinnati and fourth overall.
For the weekend, a record 36,131 participants registered for events over the three days. The field represented all 50 states and 19 countries.
The breakdown of participants for the weekend events: Full marathon, 4,731; Border Energy Half Marathon, 12,422; City Dash 4-person relay/Paycor Corporate 4-person relay, 2,732; Toyota 10K, 4,103; Tri-State Running Company 5K, 5,631; Kids Marathon presented by EY, 3,905; Pigabilities, 171; Flying Piglet Fun Run, 572; IAMS Flying Fur Run, 596; Little Kings Mile, 1,268.
Reyes, 32, of Palmdale, California, won his first Flying Pig in 2009 before today’s three-peat. “Generally I try to keep it an honest race and keep it strong, but every year presents a different challenge, and this year for me there were a few injury setbacks but I played it conservative and didn’t worry about the time out there today.”
Second for the men was 30-year-old Donnie Warner of Cincinnati in 2:28:39. Warner came in second in the 2009 and 2011 Toyota 10K and was fourth in the 2010 Marathon. Third was 30- year-old Kota Reichert of Palo Alto, California, in 2:28:57.
In the women’s marathon division, a two-time half marathon champion in the Flying Pig, 34- year-old Amy Robillard of Montgomery, stepped up to the Marathon distance and took home the title in 2:55:53. Robillard won the half marathons in 2011 and 2012.
“It was unbelievable. Running with people, you pull for them, they pull for you, everyone wants to have a great race. I just have fun. I smile a lot out there, because we’ve been through a lot in the last four years, so this is a pleasure.”
Robillard’s son, Jameson, underwent a bone marrow transplant shortly after his birth four years ago with an immune deficiency disorder. He’s now four and doing well with his older sister, Adalene, who is six. 94
“When I think I’m tired and hurting, it’s nothing compared to what my son went through, so I can’t complain. I just want to be a good role model for them.”
Second in the women’s division was the 2004 Flying Pig winner, P.J. Ball, 35, of Cincinnati in 3:01:45 and third place was 39-year-old Kerry Lee, also of Cincinnati, who was runner-up in the 2013 and 2011 Flying Pig Marathons and won the Toyota 10K in 2006. Her finishing time was 3:02:49.
In the Border Energy Half Marathon, 35-year-old Tilahun Abebe of Cincinnati won the event in a time of 1:14:46. Abebe was second in last year’s Toyota 10K, won the half in 2006 and was second in the 2010 Flying Pig Marathon. Second in the men’s division was 26-year-old Greg Piepmeier of Kettering, Ohio, with a time of 1:21:09 and third was Breylen Derrick, 28, of Cincinnati in 1:21:35.
In the women’s division, first-time half marathoner and University of Cincinnati student Juliana Madzia, 19, of St. Clairsville, Ohio, won in a time of 1:25:59. “It was perfect weather,” she said, “better than I could have ever wished for.”
Second in the women’s division was the 2012 winner of the Flying Pig Marathon, 32-year-old Rachel Bea of Cincinnati, in 1:26:28 and third was 29-year-old Mary Paulsen of Columbia, South Carolina in 1:26:43.
In the Flying Pig Saturday events, Olympic marathon Ryan Hall won the Toyota 10K in a record time of 30:32. Second was 19-year-old Blake Meyer of Cincinnati and third was Paul Odipo of Kenya. On the women’s side, Taryn Surtees of Cincinnati won in a time of 38:58. Second was Kaylee Rice of Liberty Township and third was Lauren Dullea of Cincinnati.
In the Tri-State Running Company 5K, 20-year-old Brett Frondorf of Cincinnati, the winner of the 2012 Toyota 10K, won in a time of 17:01. Odipo came in second and third was Matt Motsinger. Becky Clark, the winner of Friday night’s Little Kings Mile, won the women’s race in 17:57. Second was Karen Berndt and third was Melanie Pliskin.
Winning the men’s division of Friday’s Little Kings Mile was Jake Edwards in a time of 4:19. Clark’s winning time Friday night was 5:05.

95 Locals Take Home Top Spots at 17th annual Flying Pig Marathon Largest Field Ever for Flying Pig Weekend
Cincinnati (May 3, 2015) – It’s been more than a decade since two local runners took home the top prizes at the Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G, but on Sunday under clear skies and 45 degrees at the start, history repeated itself as two runners from the Cincinnati area were the winners of the 17th annual Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G.
In the men’s division, 26-year-old Adam Gloyeske from Hamilton, a graduate of Northern Kentucky University, won the marathon in 2:32:55. For the women, 35-year-old Amy Robillard of Montgomery defended her marathon title in a time of 2:53:10. Robillard is now four-for-four in Flying Pig events, winning the IGS Half Marathon in 2011 and 2012 and the marathon back to back.
“Last year I just wanted to finish,” said Robillard, who was coming off an injury to run in 2014. “This year I was trying to see if I could run faster than last year, and just enjoy it.” In fact, Robillard’s 2015 finishing time was more than 2:30 faster than her winning time last year of 2:55:53.
Second in the women’s division was Kerry Lee, 40, of Cincinnati, third in last year’s marathon and second in 2013, in a time of 2:59:28. Third place went to 2005 Flying Pig winner, 32-year- old Alison Bedingfield Delgado, in 2:59:55. Fourth was yet another former Flying Pig marathon winner, P.J. Ball, 36, in 3:04:51.
As for Gloyeske, he had run the Pig four times but this is his first victory, taking the lead on Mile 19 over early leader Matt Carey, who finished tenth.
“I didn’t realize how much Matt had slowed down until I saw him at about Mile 18,” Gloyeske said. “It feels great to win the Pig. It’s the kind of course that anyone can run.”
Second for the men was 35-year-old David Bea of Cincinnati, and third was Eric Hunziker, 45, of Cincinnati. Fourth was former Flying Pig Marathon winner, T.J. Lentz, who won in 2004.
In fact, that was the last year that two local runners, Lentz and Ball, took the top spot in the marathon, until this year.
In the IGS Energy Half Marathon, 20-year-old Juliana Madzia of St. Clairsville, Ohio, defended her title, winning this year in a time of 1:21:22. Last year she won in 1:25:59. Second is 27-year- old Allie Kieffer of New York in 1:22:26 and third is 26-year-old Katie Lenahan, the winner of the 2014 Queen Bee Half, in 1:23:36.
On the men’s side, the winner was 22-year-old Robert Scharold from Lexington, Kentucky, in 1:14:06. Second is Tilahun Abebe, 36, of Cincinnati in 1:14:15 and third is Josh Bokelman, 38, of Cincinnati, in 1:15:07.
In Saturday’s top events, 29-year-old Greg Lemmon of Cincinnati won the Toyota 10K and 36- year-old Emily Boles of Greensboro, N.C. won in the women’s division. In the Tri State Running Co. 5K, Matt Motsinger, 35, of Cincinnati won on the men’s side and Melanie Pliskin, 30, of
96 Cincinnati won the women’s division. Pliskin also won Friday night’s Little Kings Mile, and Jake Edwards won the Mile for the men.
The total field for the weekend totaled 37,770, a more than 1,500 increase in last year’s registration, also a record. Participants this year represent all 50 states and 22 countries.
