Geo & Culture/Music/ 10/06 Official opening by the Geopark team of Hotton Geowalking, a field trip Literature/Arts dedicated to geodiversity and heritage. Guided visit in the wonderful Calestienne landscape of the Ourthe Valley with stop in some geosites (Moulin Faber, Riveo and Hotton show cave) and final tasting event of local products. 3. Geo & Education 29/05 Visit of the laboratory and the instrumental network of the Rochefort Underground System (cave of Lorette) 07/06 A field trip specialized in geomorphology and geosites with an oral presentation of UGG Famenne-Ardenne, in collaboration with the University of Namur. Target group: Belgian Association of Geomorphologists (BAG). 4. Geo & EGN/GGN 27/05 Informative conference will be organized by the Geopark in the municipality of Durbuy for locals dedicated to the Geopark’s values and its special characteristics as well as to the EGN/GGN. In Hotton begint het avontuur van de speleologen ook als een fantastisch sprookje. Maar er was meer nodig dan de bewuste zin ‘Sesam, open u’ om beetje bij beetje de rijkdommen van de grot te ontdekken. Het zou anders al te gemakkelijk geweest zijn. Hier ging het om volharding, durf, nauwgezetheid, maar ook een portie geluk en veel koelbloedigheid waren nodig om bloot te leggen wat vandaag één van de mooiste grotten van België en zelfs van Europa is. Het is de enige toeristische grot van het land die volledig beschermd is. En wel omdat ze bijzonder opmerkelijk is omwille van de zeldzaamheid van haar afzettingen. 7-Day Battle of the Bulge International Small Group Battlefield Tour 12 – 18 September 2021 Knee Deep Into History… Hitler had decided to put all his eggs in one basket to defeat the Western Allies with one great push, the operation “Wacht am Rhein.” Starting on 16 December under terrible weather conditions the German Panzer Divisions broke through the thin American frontlines. Despite a strong resistance by several American units, the German Army made its way west. The famous “Kampfgruppe Peiper” advanced under circumstances that became tragic for all. Soon the German units arrived at the main center of communication in that region, the town of Bastogne. The grim defense of Bastogne, mainly units from the 101st Airborne Division, became famous and stands now for the strong will of the Allied Commanders and the simple GIs to finally defeat the Third Reich. On Christmas Eve 1944 the reconnaissance battalion of 2nd Panzer reached the most western point of the bulge, only some kilometers away from the Meuse River at Dinant. Already from 22 December on, American counterattacks on the southern part of the Bulge had started to open the way to Bastogne. Finally, on 26 December the first Sherman tank made its way into the town. At latest from this day on, the German commanders realized that this offensive failed and that further fighting would be senseless. Nonetheless, the fights continued almost until the end of January 1945. The faults of the La Roche Syncline and the overturned Taverneux Anticline. Léon Dejonghe Royal Institute of Natural Sciences, Geological Survey of Belgium, 13 rue Jenner, B-1000 Bruxelles. E-mail: leon.dejonghe@ naturalsciences.be Abstract. The area included in the Amberloup - La Roche-en-Ardenne - Houffalize sector is located in the province of Luxembourg and belongs geographically to the Central Ardenne. The rocks are of Lower Devonian age. On the regional level, the region integrates southeast of the axial zone of the Ardenne Anticlinorium, northwest of the Neufchâteau Synclinorium. Geological mapping at the scale of 1 : 10 000 has identified numerous faults ignored on old geological maps at a scale of 1 : 40 000. The greater part of map-sheet Houffalize is modeled by the Houffalize Syncline, which extends into the lower third of map-sheet Wibrin. The detailed surveys of its northern flank and the transition zone to the La Roche Syncline in the northwest show that the intermediate structure does not correspond to a simple anticline known in the literature as Taverneux Anticline. During the Variscan orogeny, an anticline was effectively formed, then it overturned north and, finally, was segmented by longitudinal faults which, initially, were reverse faults, but some were reactivated as normal faults during a phase of relaxation.
