I doubt that my space-obsessed younger self would’ve ever believed that I’d someday get to sit on the third floor of the coolest aerospace museum in the world and finish writing my dissertation on the history of women and commercial aviation. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to spend my last year of graduate school on fellowship at the National Air and Space Museum. Demonstrating that gendered and racial business strategies and views of technology did not develop separately from the aviation industry, this work argues that understanding modern meanings and patterns of commercial air travel requires an examination of how notions of gender, race, and international development determined the course of commercial aviation’s development. My dissertation is divided into two parts that correspond to two main periods in the history of aviation: the inter-war period formation of major commercial aviation firms and the WWII/immediate post-war period of global expansion and the “jet age.” The first section argues that women occupied a unique role in commercial aviation’s growth as a state project and symbol of national modernity during the inter-war period, while they also challenged the limits of those proscribed roles. This section examines women as symbols of domestication for the technology of flight in the United States, China, and Turkey.

    THE NINETY NINES THE NINETY NINES Captain Nancy Aldrich, aviation writer If you have been reading my blogs, I'm sure you have noticed several references to The Ninety Nines. This article will explain just who they are and what they do. In 1929, the first All Women's Air Derby was held during the National Air Races. It attracted 20* brave, adventurous young women, and covered 2,759 miles. The race began at Santa Monica, California, and ended in Cleveland, Ohio. To qualify as a racer, the women had to have a minimum of 100 flight hours, at least 25 of which had to have been on cross country flights. These were the same requirements for men competing in National Air Races. In the early days of aviation there were not many women pilots, but most of the women had met at previous events. They were a tight band and looked forward to this first real race for women. It was a chance to prove their skills to the general public. They took this event very seriously and were somewhat upset when the humorous commentator, Will Rogers dubbed it, "The Powder Puff Derby." On August 18, 1929, nineteen pilots took off, one more left the next day. Fifteen of the women arrived in Cleveland, 9 days later. Almost every pilot had some kind of problem during the race. Tragically, Marvel Crosson was killed when she crashed in Gila River Valley. Her crash was attributed to carbon monoxide poisoning. When it was learned that she had been killed there was a public outcry to cancel the race.

Bower In this article, we define and theorize the ‘‘transcendent persona,’’ a discursive strategy in which a rhetor draws from a boundary-breaking accomplishment and utilizes the symbolic capital of that feat to persuasively delineate unconventional ways of communicating and behaving in society. Aviator Amelia Earhart’s autobiography The Fun of It (1932) functions as an instructive representative anecdote of this concept and demonstrates that the transcendent persona’s persuasive force hinges on one’s ability to balance distance from audiences with similarities to them.

    NINETY C.A.P. BALLOTS IN NINE Result of the unofficial ballot on CAP uniforms is as follows: No. 1, plain skirts, received 15 votes; No. 2, culotts, received 9 votes No. 3, Army-Navy store slacks, received 16 votes; No. 4, g ir ls slacks o f standard army cloth, received 45 votes; No. 5, coveralls, received no votes. On the lower part o f the ballot: No. 1, "Each unit should pick i t s own uniform", received 4 votes; No. 2, "a ll uniforms (should) be exactly the same a ll over the country"* received 76 votes. Votes came in from a ll over the country and the general opinion seems to be that slacks should be the official uniform (Nos. 3 and 4 received a total NEWS of 59 votes) and that this uniform should be picked out and made standard throughout the United States LETTER by CAP H.Q.
