    About the Book Since Henry Lawson wrote his story ‘The Drover’s Wife’ in 1892, Australian writers, painters, performers and photographers have created a wonderful tradition of drover’s wife works, stories and images. The Russell Drysdale painting from 1945 extended the mythology around the story and it, too, has become an Australian icon. Other versions of the Lawson story have been written by Murray Bail, Barbara Jefferis, Mandy Sayer, David Ireland, Madeleine Watts and others, up to the present, including Leah Purcell’s play and Ryan O’Neill’s graphic novel. The aim is to explore how the screenwriter, through the screenplay text, communicates the potential film to the reader. The thesis thus situates the screenplay in a communicational context, and argues that the screenplay text is a means of communication. In many cases, the screenplay text is the writer’s only means of communicating with a potential investor, thus determining whether the screenplay will fulfil its purpose of becoming a film.

May 2017 ABSTRACT This thesis is intended to provide a re-evaluation of The Sopranos in response to recent contributions made to the field of film and television studies regarding the rise of “Quality Television” (Albrecht 2015 p. 5) and the “male-centred serial” (Lotz 2014 p. 21) as a popular medium. The thesis will examine the degree to which the depiction of a crisis in masculinity in The Sopranos can be said to represent a patriarchal or feminist configuration of masculinity (Lotz 2014 p. 35), and to what extent it either reaffirms or repudiates Connell’s (2005) model of hegemonic masculinity. The argument will focus on three main areas; the embodiment of masculinity, the performance of masculinity, and the presentation of violence in The Sopranos. The argument of this essay is that The Sopranos employs gendered processes of pleasure, unpleasure and identification to deconstruct hegemonic masculinity as part of a demythologising project which uses affective learning to achieve its aims (Tan 1996 p.28), and in doing so, the thesis suggests that The Sopranos creates a space for imagining new ways of performing masculinity and new, feminist configurations of male gender identity based on the acceptance and internalisation of “prohibit[ed] forms of emotion, attachment and pleasure” (Connell 2005 p.

Två far/son-konstellationer ur serierna Succession och Ozark analyseras med hjälp av mansforskning för att komma fram till hur relationerna ser ut, vilket förhållande karaktärerna har till sin egen maskulinitet och hur serierna adresserar ämnet nyliberalism. Uppsatsen landar i att fäderna har svårt att släppa sin hårda mask medan sönerna i viss mån vågar visa sig sårbara. Sönerna modellerar sig efter fäderna samtidigt som de försöker bryta sig loss och bli självständiga. Mäns svårigheter att visa sig sårbara tas upp och problematiseras i båda serierna medan den nyliberala ekonomin snarare ses som en obekväm naturlag att anpassa sig till vare sig man vill eller inte.
