i Perhaps one of the most memorable events came right at the end - with the triumph of irqw q.@i the England netball team over firstly Jamaica in the last 30 seconds and then over Australia in the final second of the match, taking the Gold medal for the first time. What an example of perseverance and determination! But it wasn't just that - the team had shown such sportsmanship and courtesy as well.

ln the days after the first Easter, Jesus came and stood among his disciples. And his first words to them as they were gathered together were "Peace be with you." An extraordinary statement in all ways. Having suffered crucifixion, coming after a time of such hardship and persecution ... Peace be with you. Peace - the taking away of fear. Peace in all fullness. Peace in your heart, mind body and soul.

Recently we had been thinking much about peace. At the beginning of April we heard of chemical attacks on the people of Douma by fellow Syrians. Following this we have seen missile attacks on Syrian chemical sites by France, USA and UK. The situation is cryrng out for peace; peace that will stop fighting, stop people having to leave their homes, stop the refugee camps being filled.

The first disciples knew that they could do nothing by themselves. Yet those simple fishermen, tax men, wanderers were people like us and as individuals, and in teams, empowered by the Holy Spirit they went out to preach the good news across the whole of the knowr world.

The community in Salisbury has been working hard to restore confidence in the city and to rebuild businesses, showing a real care for those who live there and those who visit. They aren't giving up, they 'are getting back to normal and the new normal looks as if it is going to be much better than the old, simply because people are working harder to make it so.

On May 20th, the church celebrates Pentecost - the coming of the Holy Spirit. lt is a time of great joy when we celebrate the power of God, that moves among us, guides and helps us, both to follow him, and to inspire us and lead us on.

May we be inspired to be people of peace, those who never cease to work for good in the world.

lf the netball team can win a gold medal in the last second of a match - what will we do? Rev Joanna Naish Associate Priest

Fete 2079

Meetings with residents last Autumn and further consultations have led to the decision to hold a fete in Fovant for the benefit of all communities falling into the distribution area of 'The Three Towers' magazine, these are Compton Chamberlayne, Fovant and Sutton Mandeville; it is to be called 'Three Towers Fete in Fovant'.

The inaugural fete will be held next year on Saturday 15th June 2019 on the old cricket field at East Farm by kind permission of Mr Edward Williams and his family to whom the villages should be most grateful.

Friends of Fovant Trust ln working towards the Fete it has become a real hindrance that Fovant has no over-arching charitable organisation to make decisions for the village and into which funds for the general benefit of residents, public buildings and spaces can be put. An application to set up the 'Friends of Fovant Trust' will soon to be made. This requires a minimum of three volunteers, with the right skills and experience, to be Trustees. The intention for Fovant is to have six trustees each with a specific focus so all residents, age and interest groups will be represented at Trustees' meetings. Volunteers for the role of trustee are currently coming forward and, most encouragingly, Mr Noel Flint has accepted the invitation to 'Chair'the Trust. lt is hoped that the Trust will be established and functioning by the Autumn; in its first year it will oversee 'The Three Towers Fete in Fovant' after which it may be decided to set up a second trust to manage the affairs and funds of the fete.

ln due course an appeal for funds for the 'Friends of Fovant Trust' will be launched. st r{rn ffi st &JJ c\,1 r!r\ o FI l! o tr E (u U &*J lrJ -cE =(J) g& (s ffi o- &&J .,e5 i= #*s tJ ttt # q L., ffi F U} frt- #q .-S P Is 3 z H 'E rr) O 6z' uJ Io 8"i"s 6 urs o, JZ. =G, I- -

Sponsored by the PCC - Any queries: Ring PCC Secretary, Felicity (714767) THANKYOU

I was completely overwhelmed, thrilled and not a little humbled by the generosity of my retirement gift. However I have not rested on my laurels and have been shopping" I am now the proud owner of a very smart pair of binoculars, the telescope is on order, I have an extremely comfortable office chair for the study at home and last but by no means least an all-singing all-dancing turntable for my ever-growing collection of LPs takes pride of place in the sitting room. They will all bring me such lovely memories of you all.

June and I were absolutely taken abaek by the turnout at my farewell lunch at Dinton village hall and I have been very touched by the kind comments and good wishes in the vety many cards I have received.

As I said at the Dinton lunch, it has been an absolute privilege to work at the Spring Orchard surgery for the last decade or more. The surgery was thriving when I came but I truly believe it is in an even stronger place now and I think you can look forward to even better things to come with Lindsay Kinlin at the helm - you lucky patients!! f can't finish without a word of praise for the unsung heros of the surgery and that is Stella and her team who work selflessly behind the scenes - both upstairs and down - making sure it all works so smoothly. They are a great bunch and rarely get the recognition they deserve.

So farewell, look after yourselves and keep fit With fondest wishes Andy Hall SC H.,ANMSCAPXNG E D& AHV "'&tsS TTflAT NEEMS BOTF{G I$O TI{ffi GARDHffi

Thank-vou. l've just finished my first week at the surgery and it's been great!

You've all made me feel very welcome, and have been tolerant, good-natured and polite if I have kept you waiting to be seen.

Sandy, Sue, Stella Angie and Kathryn have also been very patient with me and are helping me get to grips with all the behindthe-scenes systems

Updates

Dr Toby Williams is relocating to ShreMon surgery (one of the other practices in The Orchard Partnership). l'm sure you will alljoin me in thanking him for all his care at Fovant surgery and wish him well for the future. Dr Tony Clarke is going to start as your regular Tuesday GP - he has recently moved to the area from Sussex having passed through Wiltshire on a trip to Cornwall - he fell in love with the area so now he's here to stay. He really enjoys seeing patients and is looking forward to working at Fovant. This will be his first time doing an open access appointment systern, so please support him with this as it is quite a different way of working compared to using booked appointments. Apoointments

Regarding open access appointments I know this is a system that is highly valued by you and I have been asked a few times if this is going to change. I have had to adapt quickly to a different rhythm of consultation, but I am totally in support of it - it's the most efficient appointment system I have ever worked with, and I can see why it is so popular for you all. Winter planninq Crazy to be discussing this in April I know, but - whilst the memory is still fresh of the recent snow, I was thinking about next winter. I would like your views on what we €n all do to ensure that if there is snow / floods / another crisis that we can continue to provide safe care for you as you need it.

My concerns are

1. Transport to home visits - if anyone has 4x4 vehicle that we could use if needed this would be really helpful-perhaps we could develop a register of possible helpers we can call on? 2. How do you feel about telephone consultations to avoid having to come into the surgery if this is hazardous? 3. Making sure you have enough medication (i.e. 7 days in hand) so that you aren't worrying about running out if it is difficult to get to the surgery for your usual prescription

These are just things to think about, and l'm happy to take any suggestions for winter planning as well as any other concerns you may have. Best wishes,

Dr Lindsay Kinlin. Jack Marshall mr O79908864{4 er info@ecs-southern,co.uk

You can honour their memory 100 years after the end of the war by becoming one of 1,400 new bell ringers and joining others across the nation in ringing on the centenary of the Armistice in November 2018.

Bellringing is a British tradition and the British isles are home to a distinctive style of bellringing called 'change ringing' which produces a peal of bells, part of our national 'soundscape.' Most poke don't realise that outside the British Isles change ringing towers are few and far between. While the British Isles has some 5,500 change ringing towers, the rest of the world put together has less than 150. RINGING REM EM BERS

Bellringing is woven into the fabric of our society, marking rites of passage in our lives including christenings, weddings and funerals. It often marks and forms part of important local occasions and national celebrations - recently this has included the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics and Paralympics and the Lumiere light festival in Durham. Bell ringers have regular competitions, and often come together to ring just for the joy of it. Although bell towers are commonly in churches, you don't have to go to church to be a bellringer. Bell ringers are a friendly, inclusive community with people of all faiths, and none.

Why join Ringing Remembers? By joining you will: . Be part of a unique nationwide project to honourthe 1400 bellringers lost during the First World War . Learn a new skill that is both a sport and an art, social, a mental exercise and good for focus and fitness ' Be part of a local community and connect with an ancient British tradition . Have the opportunity to ring with others across the country on 1 lth November 2018, marking the centenary of the Armistice.

Generol leads charge to November evening'Sell-out'

Details are published in this edition of a special concert 'They Went To War' to be held on 2nd & 3'd November at Dinton Village Hall. General Sir Jack Deverell is part of a small team presenting an evening of music, song, readings and poetry of the Great War - the First World War as it later became known.

The Wilton Royal British Legion Band, conducted by Trevor Dacombe, and the 'Valley Choir' from Fovant, conducted by Brian White, will take part throughout the evening which is to celebrate the service of the men and women of the Nadder Valley who went to war in 1914 and to commemorate the lives of those who didn't return. The programme will give those who now live in the valley (East Knoyle to Wilton) the opportunity to reflect upon how the War affected the lives of those who lived here then. lt will include a short Act of Remembrance and offer a rare chance for a rousing audience sing-song of still familiar songs from 100 years ago.

SirJack reports "since 2014local people have shown great interest in events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the War - we believe that They went to War' will draw people together from the valley to hear what it was like to live through those four tumultuous years of war, both nationally and locally". He goes on "we have been amazed by the interest already shown by people. Tickets will be on sale from 1't August and we expect a sell-out on both nights". No doubt a date for our November diaries - full details will be announced in the Summer.

Broad Chalke, Bishopstone and Bowerchalke consortium is already up and running. Mental Health will be the main Item and several grants will be considered, one being the Youth Club in Fovant. Full Council agreed to form a committee to look at the Boundary Commission's review of Electoral Divisions within Wihshire that will be taking place soon. This could lead to a reduction of Councillors across Wiltshire. Divrsions are determined by the number of residents within each Division as they all should be of a similar ratio/size therefore changes are expected to the boundaries. A Parliamentary constituency review is also taking place and consultation is taking place now. I am currently on a Task Group looking at the Planning system. If anyone has an opinion on their first hand experience of the planning regime/process please let me know. A review to refresh the existing Core Strategy planning document will commence with public meetings and consultation starting on the 6th November for 6 weeks. The new Wiltshire Local Plan is not expected to be adopted until 202L. To commemorate the end of WWI a War Memorial cleaning initiative is available. This project also includes lime pointing and bronze plaque maintenance. Anyone wishing to know more Email ....tflj@_nfllusdd.com or phone...07870 984556. Find us eosiry on the ^rfflutT"*l} #H#Til"1ffi".co.uk otrlr B?sora Nutrition and More lhave spoken to several people recently who have discovered that their dog has cancer - a terribly difficult situation to deal with both practically and emotionally, Once upon a time this was a fairly unusual occurrence but now I believe that almost half of the pet dogs that we own - and love - will develop the disease at some stage in their lives. This ties in with the projected figures for cancer in humans which seems to be that something like one in three of us will develop the disease at some stage.

I have read, and spoken, about the chronic diseases which are steadily bankrupting the NHS such as cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, arthritis, dementia and allthe rest, and agree with those who state firmly that our 21-'t century drets and lifestyles - together with daily exposure to hundreds of chemicals - play a huge part in their development. Our animals are equally vulnerable to these factors - perhaps more so than us because they are nearer to the ground and often sniffing happily along the edges of fields, parks and verges which may well have been sprayed with goodness knows what! Alongside roads they are also much nearer to exhaust ernissions from vehicles * and this latter fact also applies to babies and toddlers in pushchairsl There is also the problem of regular (and necessary) worming and flea control - all done with chemicals nowadays, though there are more natural, but possibly not quite as effective, alternatives. This latter is a source of concern for me because I have two cats who, if untreated, happily bring fleas into the house and pass them on to the dog - causing considerable distress for him and much stress for rnel

I first became interested in what good nutrition can do for animals when I started my nutrition course - a good few years ago now. I had to gather up sorne recruits to become guinea pigs for my dissertation which was about food intolerance and arthritis. One of these guinea pigs was a fellow student who explained to me that he had decided to study nutrition because his dog had suffered from arthritis. Someone had advised him to charrge the dog's diet to a natural one with mineral additives but absolutely no colourings, flavouringsorother chemicaladditives. He had bought the recommended product and then sat back, amazed, to watch his dog gradually recover from the arthritis and return to being a happy and active animal. He became a rep for this particular food and decided to study nutrition, convinced that good, nutrient dense food should be equally valuable to humans - which, of course, it is. I was so impressed !

Sadly, nowadays, finding a really good quality animal food takes a lot of research and label readingl The pet food industry, like our food industry, is mainly interested in making money and uses the cheapest ingredients, including huge amounts of grains and starches which have the same detrimental effects on the health of animals as they do on humans. There are good quality foods out there but, naturally, they cost more to manufacture and we have to pay more for them. Many pet owners are unwilling -- or unable - to do this. From my research it would seem that "all in one" dried foods can be a particular problem, which is a shame because they are widely used - being easy and convenient to feed as well as fairly cheap. There are good ones out there but it's time consuming to identify them. You need a magnifying glass for the small print and, possibly, a chemistry degree to identify the ingredients in the poorer quality ones!

GomFunitv Police Report no report received, the monthly report is published in the Three Towers magazine. Councillor Mrs J Green Wiltshire Council Report on her oaqe Three Towers Communitv Magazine Mr Terry Lister read the following report. These notes refer to the financial year ending 31 October ZO1Z. This year we made a small loss. This is due mainly to the fact that the magazine has increased in size, requiring the use of more paper and ink (our main expenditure). We have had some new advertisers, which ls encouraging. We have, of course, had much support from our advertisers. They are the main source of income for the magazine - and by giving them our business we all help to support them. Each month, our editor Pauline assembles the magazine advertisements, articles and notices of events ready for printing, collating and stapling. Much of the content varies each month, so a lot of work is involved. Our regular volunteers help with the monthly production and distribution of the magazine, and it is thanks to them that we receive our monthly copy of the magazine. During the year we received a generous donation of €250 from Fovant Parish Council, and we also had donations from the Fovant lndependent Ladies group and several individuals. We wourld like to thank Bemard Allnutt for carrying out an independent audit of the 2016-17 accounts. This independent review of our accounts ensures that our financial records are verified and are in good order. A dr'scussion of making more of electronic distibution fottowed atthough some fett a papr copy was preferrcd. The Chairman offered to scan and upload the magazine onto the website. Fovant PCC. Revd Southgate read the following report. Now appointed Judith Hume t Tisbury and Elaine Brightwell at Dinton. A lot of work is required / being done in Fovant church and churchyard. Thank you to Felicity who has completed many of the faculty forms required before anything can be done. Thank you to Paul Cordle, lay Vice Chairman of the PCC who organised severalfundraisers inc 1 which raised €4000. Fovant PCC has spent a lot of money in recent years including replacing a lot of the church flooring and wom out eleetrical system. Would like to acknowledge everyone who contributes to funding which includes Fovant PC and the Commonurealth War Grave Comrnission both donate towards Churchyard upkeep. Les organised and oversaw the maintenance, and he did a splendid job. o So. what have we done in the last vear? o The maintenan@ of the badges was completed in June last year. We fully re-chalked two badges - The Australihn Commonwealth Military Forces and the 6th Gity of London Rifle Brigade - and weeded and tidied up the other seven badges. As happens every year, rain has caused chalk to run down the hillside which blurs the edge of the design. o The Drumhead Service was held at East Farm Barn (kind permission of Ed Williams) on Sunday 2nd July. Our guest speaker was General Sir Peter Wall, his address reflected on the atmosphere and emotions of a century ago and of the Society's purpose today. o A new information board has been installed in the A30 layby. lt contains information about current and lost badges, and the two Sutton Mandeville badges. Sadly, the collection box in the layby was broken into (by thieves using an angle grinder, we believe), and the contents stolen. lt is still out of use as we investigate how to provide a more secure box. o Last summer Kris Strutt and staff and students from the University of Southampton Archaeology Department canied out extensive fieldwork in the fields at East Farm and at the lron Age camp (Chiselbury) at the top of the downs. The main objective was to find as much information as possible about the exact locations of huts and other buildings in the World War I military camp. We have now received their excellent report. This work is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. o A new analysis shows that our membership and regular donor numbers stands at about 200 and we are thankfulfor all the support given to the Society by the . community of Fovant and further afield. However, we would like to encourage new members to join, so membership forms are available at the back of the hall if you would like to help ensure the future of the badges. . Eventsfoq2018 o We have a vacancy for a Membership Secretary, if anyone is interested please contact our Secretary David Gorse on 01722714651or at Anam Cara (opposite the village hall) o Our AGM will be held in this hall at 7.00 pm on Tuesday 12 June - all are welcome o Drumhead Service - Sunday 1"t July at2.45 at East Farm, Fovant o The committee is considering an initial proposal to restore the YMCA badge

A drscusstbn then followed of options for collecting money now the collection box had bxn stolen. An electrcnic copy of the Strutt report will be on the Ba@es website. Fovant Villaoe Hall- Mrs Nicky Jones read the following report. We have had another busy yearwith a very enjoyable general knowledge quiz in April devised and hosted by our treasurer Mike Carey. There was a bar and catering by members of the committee, friends and relatives with delicious puddings made by the same ladies as wellas contributions from other kind people from the village. We had a Popup Pub in September which was followed in November by a Rural Arts Wiltshire production . We saw the retum of the actor who played Winston Churchill's statue in a previous production. This time he was taking on the persona of a very believable Maggie Thatcher with her memoirs. We followed that, in late November with the Christmas fayre, ably organised again by Celia, with more craft stalls involving the knit and natter group's skills with baby clothes, toys and cushions, hand crafted jewellery , children's books, decorations and wrapping paper, the popular holly wreath man, the raffle and two charity stalls from the local area. As always the Christmas fayre lunch was well attended with 33 people taking part and was a very pleasant relaxing socialoccasion. Sadly, we had a lower tumout than usualto the fayre itself but we still made €57S.96 from the fayre and the lunch rryhich goes towards Village Hallfunds. MOBILE FOOTCARE

Last year we also housed the Fovant and Sutton Mandeville Flower Show in August. The Village Hall acts as a central point for introducing new families coming to live in the village with the newcomers meeting which is on the Saturday 2nd June at 10.30 -1'1.30 and organised by St Georges Church. Our newly refurbished kitchen is proving to be popular. Cheryl has started a Tuesday Meet and Eat club which uses the kitchen properly. We have also found it invaluable when we caterfor all Village Hall organised events. This Christmas we even had a booking for a whole family to cook they Christmas dinner and I believe they have booked again for this year as it was so successful We are starting the entertainments this yearwith a quiz on April 28th. Tickets are on sale now. Our future plans include new storage for the plastic chairs to free up more space in the back room and hopefully a permanent barbeque available for Village Hall events and for others to hire. We are also looking to tidy up the perimeter, reduce maintenance and to improve the appearance of the village hall. We could not keep the village hall running without the continued support of everyone in the village who attends or runs the activities and events and all those who give so generously of their time in volunteering to make sure we all can enjoy these events. We hope to see you allthis year. Fovant Parish Council. -Andy Havard gave the following report. We hive a full complement of councillors, with councillors having responsibilities for different matters affecting the village. The precept was set at €9.8K, with our reserves now restored to a level considered satisfactory by the extemalauditor. This financial planning has allowed us to progress with projects to benefit the village that neighbouring parishes have struggled to fund. Highway matters have formed the bulk of the work of the Council, which has involved progressing a community speed-watch scheme, the installation of a speed indicator device, ananging for the . installation of additional dropped kerbs, the introduction of a 20mph limit, and working with residents to help improve parking near the Elms. The Parish Steward has continued to work his magic for the village again this year. We have received 22 planning applications for review this year. We have provided grants to the 3 Towers & the Youth Club The Fovant Parish Councilwebsite now has a map showing points of interest using google maps, the village hall seems to disappear no matter how many times it is added. Upcoming matters include planting of Trees to commemorate the end of the 1918 war, the Best kept village competition and the Clean up Wilts initiative which was rescheduled to 15 April. Please go and use the pub now that it has reopened. Thanks to the councillors and the enormous group of villagers wtro do so much to make this a great place to live. Fovant Youth Club the following report had been received. We ha\re been doing some much needed maintenance to the hall, toilets and flat roof. Most of tris work is finished; we ane waiting now for a storage cupboard to be built in the girls toilets. This will then enable us to store a mower, art materials and the outdoor equipment, the window in the boys toilets still needs replacing. We would like to thank the parish council and the S\ AruAB for their kind donations to enable us to do this work. Attendance has been lowish peaking around a dozen or so. We are hoping numbers will rise as the weather improves! We think also numbers relate to people unsure whether we are going to open or not and wasted joumey because of it. lt seems it only needs one night of being unable to open because of one of the helpers being ill or something and it has a good few weeks of low numbers afterwards. We continue to find it difficult to get helpers on a Friday night. Parents are reminded often that we can only open if we have a certain amount of adults, these adults do not have to be DBS checked as long as there is at least one DBS checked adult present. Sadly it is a sign of the times, but it may not be much longer that the present long standing committee thelpers will want to be involved anymore. Only one of the 8 present committee/helpers has a child of youth club age. The children attending tend to come from outside the village although there seems to be more children in Fovant again, we have a regular advert in the 3 towers (thanks to Pauline) and also Dinton school Facebook page, to try and get more children and parents involved. Praise needs to go to the committee, one parent helper and one of the older chitdren for their dedication and commitment to this much loved facility r,ve have in the village. * Sonrpefff$re ffiafCs o Fsyrflemf Sclae, rues o Fop*erp S*nruce * FosTer Senricins a Tank frtsfeffaf*'on

Fovant Tree Warden the following report had been received from Mrs Jenny Bickerton. Throughout the year, I have undertaken the following tasks as the Parish Tree Warden: o Looking into applications for work on trees in the conservation area, keeping an eye on trees in Fovant and looking for signs of disease. Ash dieback is now everywhere in the country. oMaintainingtheregisterofnotabletreesinFovantontheWeb@).This is our record of local trees that might need protection. The Jubilee 'Diamond'Tree donated by the Tree Council and planted on behalf of the village on 24 March 2013 is surviving despite some damage to the trunk. . Contributing to and editing the Wiltshire Tree Warden Newsletter (3 times a year), maintaining and updating the Wiltshire Tree Wardens' website, and taking up any other opportunities to leam about trees. The opportunity arose in October to join the Wessex Ancient Tree Forum to visit some of the some really magnificent ancient trees in the grounds of Longleat, any of which are a lot older than the house (1579). . Taking part in a communig project based on Tisbury, West Tisbury, Ansty, , Chicksgrove and Fovant to record ancient trees in the Vale of Wardour. This has now been completed and documented with the AONB. 70 additional notable trees have been added to the records held by the Woodland Trust. Some local landowners have been encouraged to make new plantings and the group has been instrumental in getting access to young oaks and disease-resistant elms for them. We will hope to see these develop in future years.

Neishbourhood Watch. This no lonoer exists. Civil Emergencv Volunteer- MrWilliam Holmes Fovant has some equipment mainly funded by SSE, this includes equipment for lighting and communication. Links have been made with and Dinton. The CEV support the reducing Police force and Fire service. An example of an emergency might include a tanker crashing on the A30, if it were flammable the exclusion zone would go beyond the village hall. Fovant Flood $larden. - report read by MrWilliam Holmes. The work canied out by volunteers in past years has resulted in little need for more work other than maintenance by riparian owners. A close watch will be maintained over the coming year and work parties will be organised as or when required. The three year environment agency licence has not been renewed, but that option is available if requested. Fovant lndependent Ladies report read by Ms Vicky Townsend The last year, which is now the 3'd one for Fllgroup has once again been very successful and has seen yet another increase in membership. There have been a variety of talks including Wardrobe Management, Quilting, Silver Antiques and The Gurkas and Nepal. On more than one occasion the members were asked to show their artistic skills and crafting abilities when the village hallwas transformed by Jose Green into a florist shop or Easter baskets rarcre decorated for grandchildren.ln February members and friends were treated to an insight of the trials and tribulations of "The Fovant Three" on their Stars appeal lnca trek, with a glass of wine and a raffle the FlLgroup donated "263 to the Stars Appeal. The group also spent a pleasant evening at the Playhouse in November accompanied by partners and friends. Howeverthe highlight of the year has to be the summer outing on a day in July to Wells. The Tisbus was loaded up with 16 ladies who were treated to a tour of the Bishop's Palace followed by lunch. The whole day passed uneventfully with even rain managing to saty away until the evening. With a further charity donation of over f240 to the John McNeill Centre in Salisbury the FlLgroup goes from strength to strength.
