Louganis, Greg (b. 1960) by Robert Kellerman Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Greg Louganis is widely regarded as the greatest diver in history. After having won a silver medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he dominated diving competitions throughout the 1980s, winning two gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and two more at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Since his retirement from competition, he has acknowledged both his homosexuality and his status as a person living with AIDS. Louganis was born on January 29, 1960 in San Diego to a Samoan father and a northern European mother. He was adopted at nine months and was raised in El Cajon, a suburb of San Diego. He began his athletic life as a gymnast and acrobat, but switched to diving when a local coach noticed his natural talent. Diving became an important physical and emotional outlet for Louganis, an arena in which he could succeed at a time when he was ridiculed for his skin color, his interest in dance, his undiagnosed dyslexia, and his apparent homosexuality. Suffering from depression in his adolescence, Louganis attempted suicide several times, smoked and took drugs, and denied his sexual attraction toward men. Louganis emerged as a diving phenomenon when he was a teenager. He demonstrated not simply strength and technical proficiency, but also an unusual grace, a combination of qualities that were to become his trademark. At the 1971 AAU Junior Olympics competition, Louganis caught the attention of legendary diving coach Dr. Sammy Lee.

She is the most famous female swimmer of Roman legend. 216 A.D. - The Baths of Caracalla, regarded as the greatest architectural and engineering feat of the Roman Empire and the largest bathing/swimming complex ever built opens. Swimming in the public bath houses was as much a part of Roman life as drinking wine. At first, bathing was segregated by gender, with no mixed male and female bathing, but by the mid second century, men and women bathed together in the nude, which lead to the baths becoming notorious for sexual activities. 600 A.D. - With the gothic conquest of Rome and the destruction of the Aquaducts that supplied water to the public baths, the baths close. Soon bathing and nudity are associated with paganism and be- come regarded as sinful activities by the Roman Church. 1200’s - Thinking it might be a useful skill, European sailors relearn to swim and when they do it, it is in the nude. Women, as the gatekeepers of public morality don’t swim because they have no acceptable swimming garments.

This is Dr. Margaret Costa interviewing Paula Jean Myers Pope, silver medalist in highboard diving in the 1952 Summer Olympic Games. Q: Tell me about your childhood. A: I was the youngest of four children. I had three brothers and my father passed away when I was about six months old. My mother never remarried, so she virtually brought us up by herself. I was always very interested in sports. I did all the sports through grammar school and the primary grades. We lived on an orange ranch in Covina, California. I was brought up riding horses, going on parades and things of that nature. We used to spend our childhood summers down in Balboa. It was at the old fun zone, on the bay side of Balboa, that I fi rst became acquainted with diving. They used to have a fl oating platform with a low and a high board. I used to love climbing on that platform and would spend hours and hours just playing around, diving, and spending my summers in that area. Some close friends of our family, who were members of the Los Angeles Athletic Club, felt that I should pursue this diving when I was around 10 years old, which is actually a late age to get started by today’s standards.

This is Dr. Margaret Costa interviewing Patricia McCormick, gold medalist in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympic Games, in both springboard diving and platform diving. Q: Tell me about your childhood. A: I was born in Seal Beach on top of a grocery store. I think this really emphasizes the lifestyle that I live. My mother, who was very loving and supportive, raised three of us by herself. I worked to help support the family from the time I was 10 years old. My brother was responsible for my involvement in athletics because I wanted to be just like him. We were good little urchins who had a lot of fun. Q: What games did you play as a child? A: Living in Seal Beach, as well as Santa Monica, we were always near the water. I cannot remember not knowing how to swim. As children we bodysurfed all the time during the warmer months. At Lowell Elementary School, which I attended, I was always the top in the Girls Athletic Association. I played all of the games, tennis, dodgeball and baseball, although I did not excel in team sports.
