General Overview Pop Art is art made from commercial items and cultural icons such as product labels, advertisements, and movie stars. In a way, Pop Art was a reaction to the seriousness of Abstract Expressionist Art. Pop Art is meant to be fun.

When was the Pop Art movement? Pop Art began in the 1950s, but became very popular in the 1960s. It started in the United Kingdom, but became a true art movement in New York City with artists like Andy and Jasper Johns.

What are the characteristics of Pop Art? Pop Art uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. This includes famous celebrities like movie stars and rock stars, commercial items like soup cans and soft drinks, comic books, and any other items that are popular in the commercial world. There are a number of ways that artists use these items to create art such as repeating the item over and over again, changing the color or texture of the item, and putting different items together to make a picture.

Interesting Facts about Pop Art ● There is a similar sounding type of art called Op Art. Op Art is art that uses optical illusion to trick the eye. ● Some people say that Pop Art is poking fun at traditional art and is most closely related to the nonsense art of Dadaism. ● Pop Art artists wanted to make art for the masses. They felt that earlier art was elitist.

Famous Pop Art Artists ● Keith Haring - This New York artist is famous for his cartoon like outlined pictures of people doing different things. His art was inspired by graffiti. ● Jasper Johns - Jasper is most famous for his paintings of the American flag. He has also painted a map of the United States and another famous painting of just numbers called Numbers in Color​. ● Roy Lichtenstein - Roy is known for making art from the inspiration of comic books. ● Wayne Thiebaud - Thiebaud became famous by painting items such as pies, cakes, lipstick, and toys. One of his most famous paintings is of three gumball machines called ​Three Machines​. ● ​ - Warhol is the most famous of the Pop Artists and played a major role in making the art movement popular. The "Quarantine Olympics" is an internet trend that has come out of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. It began at the Presley family home in Cornelius, North Carolina.

For one event, the Presleys played dodgeball. Yet none of the players could see each other, and they used rolls of toilet paper instead of balls.

"We played through all the board games. So we had to get creative," said Alex Presley, age 25. For the past month, Alex has been hunkered down with his girlfriend, twin brother and parents.

Alex calls the game "blindfolded toilet paper dodgeball." The rules are simple: Once you're hit by a roll of toilet paper, you're out, and then you can take off the blindfold. To make the game even more challenging, the Presleys spun in circles to dizzy themselves before playing.

The result was chaos.

Quirky Activities Combat Boredom

Alex created a video of the game and shared it on TikTok. In the video, five people stumble around a living room. Shouts mingle with the thuds of rolls bouncing off windows and walls. The family's game nights have made them famous on the internet.

The Presleys aren't the only people whose videos have gone viral during quarantine. Many families are becoming internet famous for quirky activities such as themed dinners and parody videos. The videos entertain people who are desperate for fun as the coronavirus continues to spread worldwide.

Blindfolded toilet paper dodgeball is just one event in the Presleys's "Quarantine Olympics." The competition series has gone viral on TikTok.

The contest began in early April after Alex suggested that his family attempt an unusual challenge. In the challenge, participants compete to see how long they can drink water from a cup using only a straw. The cup is constantly filled while the competitor drinks.

The Presleys' "Straw Challenge" drew 7.5 million views on TikTok.

Lively Family Dinners

Now, the family is coming up with new events. Fans watching at home root for their favorite player and play the games themselves. Alex said they try to keep the games simple so that other families can try to play them, too.

Another family who now has lots of free time is the Cannuscios from Massachusetts. Derek Cannuscio is a 14-year-old with a passion for cooking and comedy. He has turned family dinners into themed experiences that are wildly popular on TikTok.

Derek cooks themed dinners for his family using supplies he finds around the house. He combining cooking with comedy. He recreates restaurant experiences.

Derek's sister, 18-year-old Caitlin Cannuscio, said that Derek's dinners have inspired other families to come up with their own themed meals.

"I don't know what I would be doing in quarantine without this," said Caitlin. She films the meals for TikTok.

Other families have created parody videos.

Song Lyrics Get A Rewrite

The Marshes are a family from the United Kingdom who went viral in March. The family created their own version of "One Day More," which is a song from the musical "Les Misérables." Ben Marsh said the song's new lyrics were inspired by the frustrations of being in isolation.

The Marsh family posted a video of them singing the song on Facebook.

"One day more, another day another destiny, shopping for online delivery," sings Danielle Marsh, Ben's wife, in the video.

The video has gotten worldwide recognition. It was even shared by actress Anne Hathaway. She was in the film version of the musical and won an Oscar for her performance.

Canadian author Joel Sutherland and his family filmed a live-action version of the opening for "The Simpsons." The family used costumes and props they found around the house.

Creative Projects Keep Families Busy

The video recreates the cartoon's introduction. Sutherland posted the video to Twitter on April 8. It has been shared by the "The Simpsons" producer and the show's official Twitter account.

"Doing creative projects is a good way of keeping busy and keeping yourself not depressed," Colleen Morris said. She is Sutherland's wife.

Before sheltering in place, Caitlin Cannuscio said her family was often very busy. Before, they "never really ate dinner together."

"I'm supposed to be at college, so I haven't had dinner with them in a while," said Caitlin. "This has all really just brought us together."

6 Reasons to Drink Water It's no magic bullet, but the benefits of water are many. By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD

Americans seem to carry bottled water everywhere they go these days. In fact, it has become the second most popular drink (behind soft drinks). But water lovers got a jolt recently when we heard that a new report had found that the benefits of drinking water may have been oversold. Apparently, the old suggestion to drink eight glasses a day was nothing more than a guideline, not based on scientific evidence. But don't put your water bottle or glass down just yet. While we may not need eight glasses, there are plenty of reasons to drink water. In fact, drinking water (either plain or in the form of other fluids or foods) is essential to your health.

"Think of water as a nutrient your body needs that is present in liquids, plain water, and foods. All of these are essential daily to replace the large amounts of water lost each day," says Joan Koelemay, RD, dietitian for the Beverage Institute, an industry group. Kaiser Permanente nephrologist Steven Guest, MD, agrees: "Fluid losses occur continuously, from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool, and these losses must be replaced daily for good health," he says.

When your water intake does not equal your output, you can become dehydrated. Fluid losses are accentuated in warmer climates, during strenuous exercise, in high altitudes, and in older adults, whose sense of thirst may not be as sharp. Here are six reasons to make sure you're drinking enough water or other fluids every day:

1. Drinking Water Helps Maintain the Balance of Body Fluids. Your body is composed of about 60% water. The functions of these bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature.

"Through the posterior pituitary gland, your brain communicates with your kidneys and tells it how much water to excrete as urine or hold onto for reserves," says Guest, who is also an adjunct professor of medicine at Stanford University.

When you're low on fluids, the brain triggers the body's thirst mechanism. And unless you are taking medications that make you thirsty, Guest says, you should listen to those cues and get yourself a drink of water, juice, milk, coffee -- anything but alcohol.

See 6 Health Benefits of Water 2. Water Can Help Control Calories. For years, dieters have been drinking lots of water as a weight loss strategy. While water doesn't have any magical effect on weight loss, substituting it for higher calorie beverages can certainly help. "What works with weight loss is if you choose water or a non-caloric beverage over a caloric beverage and/or eat a diet higher in water-rich foods that are healthier, more filling, and help you trim calorie intake," says Penn State researcher Barbara Rolls, PhD, author of The Volumetrics Weight Control Plan.

Food with high water content tends to look larger, its higher volume requires more chewing, and it is absorbed more slowly by the body, which helps you feel full. Water-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, broth-based soups, oatmeal, and beans.

3. Water Helps Energize Muscles. Cells that don't maintain their balance of fluids and electrolytes shrivel, which can result in muscle fatigue. "When muscle cells don't have adequate fluids, they don't work as well and performance can suffer," says Guest.

Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. Follow the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for fluid intake before and during physical activity. These guidelines recommend that people drink about 17 ounces of fluid about two hours before exercise. During exercise, they recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

4. Water Helps Keep Skin Looking Good. Your skin contains plenty of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. But don't expect over- hydration to erase wrinkles or fine lines, says Atlanta dermatologist Kenneth Ellner, MD.

"Dehydration makes your skin look more dry and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration," he says. "But once you are adequately hydrated, the kidneys take over and excrete excess fluids." You can also help "lock" moisture into your skin by using moisturizer, which creates a physical barrier to keep moisture in.

5. Water Helps Your Kidneys. Body fluids transport waste products in and out of cells. The main toxin in the body is blood urea nitrogen, a water-soluble waste that is able to pass through the kidneys to be excreted in the urine, explains Guest. "Your kidneys do an amazing job of cleansing and ridding your body of toxins as long as your intake of fluids is adequate," he says.

When you're getting enough fluids, urine flows freely, is light in color and free of odor. When your body is not getting enough fluids, urine concentration, color, and odor increases because the kidneys trap extra fluid for bodily functions. If you chronically drink too little, you may be at higher risk for kidney stones, especially in warm climates, Guest warns.

6. Water Helps Maintain Normal Bowel Function. Adequate hydration keeps things flowing along your gastrointestinal tract and prevents constipation. 5 Tips to Help You Drink More If you think you need to be drinking more, here are some tips to increase your fluid intake and reap the benefits of water:

1. Have a beverage with every snack and meal.

2. Choose beverages you enjoy; you're likely to drink more liquids if you like the way they taste.

3. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Their high water content will add to your hydration. About 20% of our fluid intake comes from foods.

4. Keep a bottle of water with you in your car, at your desk, or in your bag.

5. Choose beverages that meet your individual needs. If you're watching calories, go for non-caloric beverages or water.

Writing and Solving Equations Using Inverse Operations Remember, an equation is two expressions set equal to each other. Both sides of the equal sign must represent the ​same value​ for the equation to be true.

Let’s look at a sample problem that is illustrated on a balance scale.

The bag is labeled ​x​ to represent the unknown number. Because the scale is balanced, we know that x​ + 5 must equal 12.

The two sides of the balance scale represent the two expressions and the center post represents the equal sign. For the equation to be true, we have to keep the scale balanced. When we solve for ​x,​ we are taking 5 away from both sides to “see” the answer.

​x​ + 5 = 12 ​When we add 5 to an unknown number, we get 12. x + 5 = 12 We undo the addition by subtracting. ​ ​ ​- 5 ​ ​- 5 ​ x = 7 Now we are back to x by itself; the unknown # is 7. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​

We can write and solve equations to solve many different kinds of problems. Many have 2 or more steps. ​Look at this example:

Karla ordered sandwiches to be delivered to her home. She paid $8.50 per sandwich and a delivery charge of $4.75. Her total cost was $47.25. How many sandwiches did she purchase?

Her cost, $47.25, was equal to 8.50 times the number of sandwiches plus 4.75 for delivery. 47.25 = 8.50 (number of sandwiches) + 4.75 ​ 47.25 = 8.50​s​ + 4.75

To solve it, we need to know what the ​s ​stands for; we need a value for ​s.

To find it, we are going to isolate the variable, ​s,​ (get it by itself). The steps: 47.25 - 4.75 = 8.50​s​ + 4.75 - 4.75 We subtract the constant from both sides (to keep the equation balanced.) When we have removed the delivery charge from both sides, we know that $42.5 was spent on sandwiches alone.

If we divide the amount spent on sandwiches by the unit price (the price of one sandwich, we can find out how many sandwiches were sold. 5 sandwiches were purchased.

Try it. Write and solve an equation to answer the questions.

4. Rodrigo bought a certain number of movie tickets priced at $6.00 each for his family, and paid $10.00 for parking. If his total cost was $64.00, how many movie tickets did he purchase?

Be an advocate of exercise and watch how it improves your students' results in the classroom. While attending a three-day special education workshop, the book, Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, was recommended to me on the basis that it provides incontrovertible evidence that exercise can help all students—especially special education students— improve in school. At a time when recess and physical education programs are being cut for test prep, I knew this was information worth having and sharing.

Exercise Can Improve Learning

Written by Dr. John J. Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the book explores the connection between exercise and the brain, providing strong evidence that aerobic exercise physically remodels the brain for peak performance on all fronts. Specifically, Dr. Ratey writes that exercise improves learning on three levels: "First, it optimizes your mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation; second, it prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information; and third, it spurs the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus." In short, not only does exercise help the brain get ready to learn but it actually makes retaining information easier.

A suburban school district outside of Chicago is proving this point. The Naperville, Illinois district implemented an early morning exercise program called Zero Hour, which sought to determine whether working out before school gives students a boost in their reading ability and other subjects. Since introducing this program, the district has seen remarkable results in both wellness and academic performance.

Naperville's philosophy was to teach kids how to monitor and maintain their own health and fitness—a lifestyle skill with enormous long-term benefits. In fact, across the country, research shows students with higher fitness scores also have higher test scores. Physical activity has a "positive influence on memory, concentration, and classroom behavior." Exercise Can Improve Students' Mental Health

Dr. Ratey's research also shows that exercise can be the best defense against a lot of the common mental health issues that students struggle with.

Stress Our students face enormous stress in the classroom and in their lives, including peer pressure, work overload, and high stakes testing. Exercise controls the emotional and physical feelings of stress, and it also works at the cellular level. Physical activity is a natural way to prevent the negative consequences of stress because it can ward off the ill effects of chronic stress and actually reverse them. In addition, studies show people who add physical activity to their lives become more socially active, which boosts confidence and helps establish and maintain social connections.

Anxiety and Panic Disorders Dr. Ratey defines anxiety as a natural reaction to a threat, but worrying when there's no real threat, to the point where one can't function normally, is an anxiety disorder. Panic is the most intense form of anxiety, and I've witnessed my students having panic attacks during tests and cooperative learning situations, or sometimes just from the general pressures of school.

Spark points out that the majority of studies show aerobic exercise significantly reduces symptoms of anxiety disorders. Through exercise, people learn to alleviate anxiety and rebuild their confidence. Dr. Ratey points out that exercise reroutes the brain's circuits, reduces muscle tension, and teaches a different outcome to an anxiety-provoking situation, ultimately setting an anxious person free from their worrisome tendencies.

Depression Aerobic exercise is known to have a positive impact on depressive symptoms. Studies suggest that endorphins produced in the brain during exercise contribute to a general feeling of well-being. Exercise also boosts dopamine, which improves mood and jump-starts the attention span. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise a few days a week can do wonders for students who suffer from depressive moods.

ADHD School can be an especially excruciating environment for students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because of the need to sit still, face forward, and listen. Dr. Ratey says structured exercise—in the form of martial arts, ballet, skateboarding, or gymnastics, for example—is one of the best treatment strategies for ADHD.

The combination of challenging both the brain and body is even better than just aerobic activity alone because the technicality of those sports activates brain areas that "control balance, timing, sequencing, evaluating consequences, switching, error correction, fine motor adjustment, inhibition, and, of course, intense focus and concentration."

I'd highly recommend Spark to any teacher or parent interested in how exercise and the brain coincide. It will soon become clear that providing students with challenging fitness programs has numerous benefits. Starting slow, finding social support, mixing up activities, and keeping to a routine is a prescription for both brain and body health.

North Africa today

Today, most North Africans are Muslims, but some are Coptic Christians and some Jews also live in the region. Arabic is the official language of all five countries. French is important in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. In recent years, thousands have left North Africa for Europe looking for jobs. Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia have lost the most people. Spain, the U.K. and France are major destinations. Social issues are also a concern. High populations in Libya and Egypt lead to crowding, poverty, and poor healthcare. Two political forces are strong in North Africa. One is a push for democracy. Another is the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Many Muslims worry about the impact of Western culture on their lands. They think Western entertainment (like movies and music) conflicts with Islamic values. They also disagree with Western ideas on women's rights. Women in North Africa have more rights than in other Muslim lands, especially in Tunisia where they can own their own business. In Egypt, Christians worry about their position becuase of attacks from Muslim extremists. Egypt and Morocco have close ties to the United States. That friendship has come under increasing criticism from Muslim fundamentalists. This raises questions about what will happen if Muslim conservatives gain power. Will the new governments reject close ties with the United States? Will Algeria and Libya be less willing to sell oil to the United States? Will these new governments take steps against Israel?

Not far outside the main area of Cairo, Egypt, is their city of trash. And the citizens of Garbage City, as it's called, are really quite happy. Only one question seems to worry them: Will they be able to keep making their livings by collecting Cairo’s trash? Different families in Garbage City focus on different types of trash. Some work with metals, some with plastic bottles, some with paper — sorting the items into stacks of “sellable” and “unsellable.” Anything that can be reused or recycled is saved. Carts pulled by donkeys pull the trash through the streets. These carts are stacked up to 10 feet high with recyclables. These expert dumpster-divers are known as Zabbaleen, that’s “garbage people” in Egyptian Arabic. They do an amazing job of recycling 80% of the waste they collect. The reason that’s so amazing is that modern European and North American cities recycle only about 25-70% of the garbage they collect. The Zabbaleen are seen by other Egyptians as outsiders — and not just because they collect trash for a living. Their ancestors migrated to Cairo about 80 years ago from upper (southern) Egypt. They are Christians in a city of Muslims. They are also pig-farmers in a culture that views pigs as filthy animals and as nasty to eat. But these outsiders do Cairo a huge favor. For about 80 years, they’ve collected, sorted and disposed of the trash and garbage of one of the world’s largest cities. With a population of around 25 million, Cairo makes mountains and mountains of solid waste every day. And the city’s 80,000 Zabbaleen are thankful for every bit of it, as are the many thousands of pigs that live among them. They feed the rotting food to the pigs, which makes the animals happy. As you’d expect, it’s a life of strong smells and sights, but the Zabbaleen don’t mind. In fact, as they’re proud to admit that they know more about this business than anyone. That business, however, is always in danger of being taken away. The people of Cairo, even the government of Egypt itself, all seem to want the Zabbaleen gone. Back in 2009, when swine flu was a health problem in many places, the Egyptian government decided to kill all of Egypt’s pigs. They did this even though there was no swine flu in Egypt at that time. About 300,000 pigs were slaughtered. Since Muslims do not eat pork, the country’s pig farms were mainly Zabbaleen and were all Christian. They became angry that Egypt took away their livestock. The Zabbaleen have a suggestion. One simple change could make a huge difference — and possibly make everyone in Cairo happy. They would like the people living in Cairo to just separate their organic waste (food garbage) from their inorganic waste (paper, plastic, glass). This would allow the Zabbaleen to continue picking up the city’s waste and would also allow them to raise pigs farther away from the city.

Why would this work for the Zabbaleen? Well, the way they have fed their pigs in the past was a very slow process. While sorting through trash and garbage, they would pick out the bits of food waste and throw it over to their pigs. This would go on for hours as they sorted paper, plastic, metals, glass, and food garbage. But if the people of Cairo want the pigs far from everyone, pig farms can be set up farther from the city. If the food garbage is already separated out, the Zabbaleen can just take that garbage directly to their pigs. The rest can be taken back to their “Garbage City” where they sort the paper, plastic, metals, and glass for recycling. So far, the people of Cairo and the government have seemed uninterested. But as Cairo’s garbage situation gets worse, it's possible that the Zabbaleen will get their way – and finally get some respect.
