Geology and building stones in the East Midlands Graham Lott Abstract. The East Midlands has a diverse heritage of stone buildings reflecting the varied character of the regions geological strata. The principal stones used in the buildings of the area are described and identified and placed in their modern stratigraphic context. This very diversity, however, while providing a colourful backdrop to the villages and towns of the area for all to enjoy, presents an increasing problem to those concerned with conserving these structures, as many of the stones are now no longer quarried. The Cambrian Rocks Overlying the Charnian succession are the finer grained lithologies of the Brand Group. The overlying Brand Group was formerly included in the Charnian Supergroup but has recently been reassigned to the Lower Cambrian (Bland, 1994). The succession includes the greywacke sandstones and siltstones of the Swithland Formation which commonly show a metamorphically-induced, coarse slatey cleavage.
