This is especially evident in recent years. The 1996 “split” between the Indy Racing League (IRL; later, the IndyCar Series) and Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART; later the Champ Car World Series) severely hurt the sport. Following the split there was a well-documented decline in fan interest from which the sport has not recovered. Less understood, however, is that under the Indy Racing League the Indianapolis 500, the premier event in open-wheeled racing in the United States, became more competitive. Ironically, while fan interest decreased in the Indy Racing League era, the quality of racing increased. The increased competition associated with the Indy Racing League is a historically significant development that bodes well for the future of the sport.

Starting third on the grid following Friday’s second qualifying session, di Folco made a superb start to grab second from Oregon Team’s Dorian Boccolacci as the field funnelled through Turn 1 for the first time. Kevin Rossel (Target Racing) said: “It was a really good, but also quite difficult race. The tyres were pretty much finished by the end, so it was a case of managing them and the gap we had to second place. We had a strategy for the start of the race, which was basically to get second at the first corner. Alberto made a really good overtake so that kind of set us up nicely for my stint.” Team-mate Alberto di Folco added: "Our car was very fast. We had a perfect strategy, and in my driving stint, I tried to keep the gap over my pursuers. After the pit-stop Kevin did a great job." Pole-sitter Loris Spinelli (Van der Horst Motorsport) led the initial stages, building a five-second advantage over di Folco before the pit-stop window opened 20 minutes into the 50-minute race. While di Folco made progress at the start, Leipert Motorsport’s Marcus Påverud fell back one position to fifth on the opening lap, dropping behind Target Racing’s Miloš Pavlović.

NASCAR Prime Time Richard Childress Racing has three NASCAR Nationwide Series cars, three Sprint Cup Series cars, three NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on a full schedule in 2012. With cars and sponsors for nine teams, keeping an outside graphics provider up to date with color schemes and sponsor logos proved difficult. On top of all the teams’ race cars, each has a show car that goes on tour for corporate partners and is on display at conventions, store openings, car shows and more. To meet the team’s growing graphics demands, the leadership decided to bring the printing and installation in-house in 2011 and turned to Avery Dennison for digital media and overlaminates. Graphics Partner Nick Woodward is the graphics manager at the RCR Graphics Center. He and Kenneth Ward, the creative manager, are responsible for keeping all the cars in the right colors and with the right sponsor logos.     RACING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE A REVIEW OF THE SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE OF INTERNATIONAL RACING CIRCUITS Edition June 2021 Racing towards a sustainable future FOREWORD I have been involved with the safety and sustainability of racing tracks for many years now, as a driver, GPDA Chairman and a circuit designer. And while I would argue that big improvements have been made in terms of safety, I also know that there is a long way to go in terms of fully embracing sustainability for racing tracks around the globe. Though circuits have started to change the way in which they approach sustainability, more guidance on what sustainability means and how a circuit can be sustainable are needed. This is why I welcome this new research and the data-driven proposal of the Sustainable Circuits Index™, highlighting indicators from the wider sustainability and sport ecosystem, encouraging best practice and calling attention to the importance of transparent reporting and independent validation. Motorsport has historically been defined by its commitment to innovation and excellence through competition. It’s now critically important for our sport to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability through collaboration. This paper highlights the new metrics for success in this global effort and provides circuits with the tools they need to help win the race for our planet, a race which we can only win together.
