Subject: Music Year group Topics and resources Year 7 Sonority City! – Instruments of the Orchestra This unit develops pupils’ knowledge and understanding about orchestral instruments and families/sections of orchestral instruments. Pupils learn about the construction, sound production and timbres/sonorities of different orchestral instruments, the layout, grouping and the instruments which belong to each section of a modern symphony orchestra. Key to this unit is pupil’s understanding of the terms: TIMBRE AND SONORITY with a general introduction to the orchestra followed by exploring one orchestral section or family per lesson. BBC Orchestras & Singers Classics for Kids SFS Kids Fun with Music DSO Learn by instrument Year 8 Black Musical Heritage In this unit of work students will be looking at the progression of music within the African-American culture. Starting off with the origins of Rhythm ‘n’ Blues moving through the decades right up to the modern day. 1. Protest songs - BLM 2. Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and Soul 3. Funk and Disco 4. Hip hop and Rap 5. Afrobeat and fusion music 6. Protest songs – closing the circle Year 9 What makes a good song? This unit begins by exploring ‘What Makes a Good Song?’ through practical musical investigation of two ‘good’ songs as case studies: “Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran and “Shotgun” by George Ezra. Pupils explore Hooks/Riffs, Structure, Melody and Lyrics through listening and analysis and performing parts of each song as short musical arrangements. Pupils learn about the importance of Hooks and Riffs, Popular Song Structure and the various difference components/sections within, Melodic Motion (Conjunct and Disjunct Motion) and Lyrics within both these case studies and a range of other popular songs. Lead Sheet notation is used throughout the unit and pupils are encouraged to confidently navigate around lead sheets evaluating what musical information is, and is not, included in this form of notation. MTV BRAND NEW FOR 2014 VOTING NOW LIVE London, 17th December 2013 MTV UK & Ireland has opened the public vote to find the winner of this year’s coveted new music showcase, MTV Brand New for 2014, being staged by MTV in association with Emporio Armani Diamonds. Voting is now live on mtv.co.uk/brandnew, with the winner due to be announced in early February 2014 after two gigs at the Islington Assembly Hall. The gigs on January 29th and 30th will showcase a selection of the nominees from the MTV Brand New for 2014 shortlist, which is as follows: Banks Ella Eyre Elyar Fox George Ezra Joel Compass Kwabs Royal Blood Sam Smith The Vamps Marie Naffah (Unsigned Winner) The ten nominees have been selected by MTV executives and a panel of industry representatives and have all been identified as being ‘destined for big things in 2014’. The shortlist was announced at an official press launch at The Drury Club on Wednesday 27th November, which showcased performances by special guests Wretch 32 and 2014 nominee, Elyar Fox.
