Not up to ParBy Wine SnobThis was a gift for my husband for his desk. The content was not as funny or interesting as he had thought. He did not even keep it. As host of the Tonight Show, Johnny Carson was America's favorite entertainer for three decades. With him behind the desk, the show was No. 1 in late-night ratings during his entire thirty-year run, a record, still unmatched in television. Now fans can enjoy some of Johnny's most iconic and hilarious moments with the Johnny Carson 2013 Day-to-Day Calendar, which features an excerpt from one of his memorable monologues or from one of his legendary skits each day. BEHIND THE BIG DESK: HOW NEWS PARODY RESTRUCTURED THE NETWORK LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW AND REINVENTED AN AMERICAN ART FORM A Senior Thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in American Studies By Alexander Mitchell Washington, D.C. April 19, 2018 Copyright © 2018 Alexander Mitchell All rights reserved ii BEHIND THE BIG DESK: HOW NEWS PARODY RESTRUCTURED THE NETWORK LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW AND REINVENTED AN AMERICAN ART FORM Alexander Mitchell Thesis Adviser: Brian Hochman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT On June 16, 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy bounded into Studio 6B in 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. Tonight Show host Jack Paar had invited Kennedy onto his program as the first presidential candidate to appear on late night television. Paar treated Kennedy with deference and worked to keep his program largely apolitical, focusing mostly on charming banter with the candidate and questions about his personal life. However, despite Paar’s best efforts, the press slammed him for being too political by even having a politician on his program. Fast- forward fifty-six years to 2016. In the exact same studio, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon conducts a similarly friendly interview with controversial presidential candidate, Donald Trump. Once again the host is widely attacked by the presses. But this time the criticism isn’t that Fallon was being too political, it was that he wasn’t being political enough. In this senior thesis I explore what changes occurred over this six-decade span to make Americans expect more from our late night talk show hosts.

‘Digs’ A taste of HollywoodA taste of in Lincoln as Carson School films University Nebraska–Lincoln of Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts arts MAGAZINE | 2012 UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA–LINCOLN | HIXSON-LIED COLLEGE OF FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS Dean’s Letter “As you set out for Ithaka, hope the voyage is a long one.” So begins Ithaka, the poem by C.P. Cavafy. With its allusion to Odysseus’s return home from the Trojan wars, it speaks to us about the nature and meaning of journeys. I am reminded of Ithaka as I write this to you, for I have had a remarkable journey as well, one that has brought me back to Lincoln. I began at UNL nearly 20 years ago teaching in the theatre department, now the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. I ventured Charles O’Connor elsewhere for nine years in pursuit of other things. Now I am honored to be the new Dean of the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. Like many of you, our alumni and friends, I have thought about this place often as the years passed, and I have kept in contact with the college by reading this magazine and the college’s newsletters. A lot has changed in nearly a decade. Due to the vision and leadership of Dean Jack Oliva and our excellent faculty, our college is poised upon an exciting era in education. We owe a lot to Jack for all he has done, and we wish him well in his new position as Vice President for Academic Affairs at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

An Archive of indigenous cultural materials has the potential to straddle all of these negotiation boundaries, and to influence the power relationships involved. Using examples from the Comhaltas Irish Traditional Music Archive, this paper looks at the ways in which the decisions taken by an archive can draw energy from and feed back into the ongoing negotiation of cultural identity. 9:00am 12:00pm | International House Digital Motion Picture Archive Framework Project Chair: Andy Maltz Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (United States) Speakers: Dana Plepys University of Illinois at Chicago and CineGrid (United States) Milt Shefter Miljoy, Inc. and Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (United States) Seth Kaufman Whirl i Gig, Inc. and CineGrid (United States) Karen Barcellona Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences (United States) Jeffrey Weekley Naval Postgraduate School and CineGrid (United States) The Digital Motion Picture Archive Framework Project is a multi year collaborative effort to investigate and address key issues in long term preservation of and access to digital motion picture materials. A partnership between the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP), this project builds upon earlier Academy research on digital preservation issues from the perspective of the major motion picture studios and large film archives. Key topic areas for this presentation will be: Long term digital preservation issues from the perspective of independent filmmakers, documentarians and nonprofit public archives. While 2007’s “The Digital Dilemma” focused on these issues from the perspective of the major motion picture studios and large film archives, the issues are somewhat unique for those without the financial and operational capabilities of larger organizations.
